I couldn't stop thinking about Why Fish Don't Exist for weeks after I finished it. I completely agree with your review! It all came together beautifully at the end.

RIGHT?! It's still lingering in my brain - especially that last chapter. So good. I have to keep telling myself I have so many other books to read so I don't give into the temptation to start rereading it.

Have you both got any other books you would recommend to someone who enjoyed the personal elements of Why Fish Don’t Exist, and thinks about it too after finishing it?

I'm always so intrigued by the nature nonfiction you read! Fathoms in particular appeals to me, although finding time for a bigger book like that is always a challenge.

I loved this video, Olive. I came because I was curious about Why Fish Don't Exist, but your review of Fathoms won me over also. I share your love of nonfiction about whales too! I'll definitely be picking these up at some point, it's been a long while since I've read some good nonfiction! 💙

Both sound intriguing. But the first one, in particular. (And maybe for a reason not specifically related to the content.) It just struck me, as I listened to you, what an impact one person can have on the life of another. Even without meeting, and just from afar. Anyway, probably just 90+ degree heat inspired ramblings from me!

I did, too and have been reading about birds ever since. Another Olive pick that I hold dear is Vulture: The Private Life of an Unloved Bird by Katie Fallon. Anything by Noah Stryker bird-wise is excellent, too.

Honestly, for a nature book, it's pretty light on the actual nature so it might be a good entry point for you!

Brilliant video, Olive. I am so pumped up to read both the books. Also, a few years ago I watched this documentary, Blackfish, exploring the life of Orcas in captivity. It was mind-blowing, I still get chills. May I suggest that you checking it out, in case you would be interested ☺

I read Fathoms earlier this month, and while I enjoyed the writing, I felt like too much time was spent on the author's personal journey for my taste. I felt like it was covering up the science. I was also baffled by the omission of a section on whales in captivity. I feel like it would've really fit with her charisma narrative.
@abookolive
@abookolive 3 жыл бұрын
Understandable. I read a lot from this genre, so the personal elements actually seemed on the lighter side compared to other nature nonfiction books I've read. I actually like them - I thought they were a good way to establish the connection between humans and whales not just in the broad, species-level way, but in the one-on-one way, too. I do agree that a chapter on whales in captivity would have been really fitting.

Wonderful! If you're just getting started in nonfiction, you might want to hold off on Fathoms - it's very information-heavy so it might be a little overwhelming. Why Fish Don't Exist, however, would be a fantastic place to start if you're intrigued by the premise! Also, if you don't know already, I host a month-long reading initiative every November called Nonfiction November. The whole purpose is to inspire the community to read more nonfiction than we all would ordinarily read - it's a great time to try out more nonfiction & get some great recommendations! We'd love to have you join us in November, if you're interested - I announce the event in early October.

@@abookolive Fantastic, I would for sure like to join. I think I would enjoy non-fiction if it envolved psychology or mystery.
