I never noticed that. One phrase that has stuck with me over the years about this card is from you - "The battlefield after the defeat." I find that image/phrase very evocative - can unfold in so many ways, and it has so much context, insight, etc in a spread. When you pointed out the festive outfits the first thing I thought of was a kind of argument or something taken too far amongst allies - not backing off and some friendship or common cause being lost. I can't get away from the fact that he's holding three swords whenever I look at this. Like he's choosing the three of swords, heartache, choosing to spite himself. Possibly also mistaking injuring others for coming out on top "winning." So I'm playing with the interpersonal destructiveness that might come from some intellectual thing taken too far - the battlefield after the defeat because you were so willing to cut off your nose to spite your face etc. This card feels like the five of wands gone awry. Where that can be vigorous helpful conflict, this feels "too sharp," too cruel because of a lack of awareness or even caring about others. Hahah reading this it's very negative! I'm going to try on your idea about the growth of letting go after defeat.

The red and green is also a nod back to the justice card (which represents fair outcomes for everyone). Sometimes we try to take matters into our own hands, but we cannot be cosmic judges on our own world, because we will always overlook the finer intricacies. The green and red also represent the root and heart chakra and in energy healing, when they are unbalanced, we make terrible decisions. I'm just illustrating how well constructed the tarot is. It completely alligns with universal truth.

I like that you’ve seen some positivity in this card. I pulled it recently in an effort to understand a relationship I’m in and your optimistic take is encouraging.
