Even though no one died, the accident on The Smiler is one of the all time worst for me because of the multiple levels of safety violations that caused it.

More like two specific but really big ones: ride was operating in winds higher than the maximum it was designed for and the block system was bypassed by someone who should never have had access to the maintenance control panel.

@@curlyheadedbhabyy289 the fact that you ride roller coasters as often as driving plays a big factor. Also with driving you’re going past tens of thousands of other drivers in your life and you can’t rely on being safe, with a computer operated ride track you don’t have to worry about that at all.

Interesting subject. Reminded me when I was very young, we lived near Riverview in Chicago. I was 5 when I rode the Bobs which was the best coaster at the park. But I remember a couple of deaths at different times on the Bobs. The restraints were insufficient and the deaths were cause by people stand up at the top of the first hill. You’re so right that coasters have come a long way. Thanks for your research!

The next time you do a worse coaster accident here’s one from Roanoke Virginia. The park was called Lakeside Amusemen Park and they had a roller coaster they’re called a shooting star. One summer it had a terrible accident where to car slammed into each other killing several people and one actually flew off the track. If I’m not mistaken I think there’s actual footage of Lakeside here on KZfaq. Worth looking into it was an awesome coaster for it today. And the weird thing is after they brought it back up the specs , The line was even longer.

I rode Willard's Whizzer many times. As coasters go it was pretty tame. But it had some good banks and turns. It never caused you to lift out of your seat. The hills and turns were not steep. G forces held riders in place as the turns were sharp. There were no restraints in the cars. You sat three to a car but you straddled the seat and it was only one across like a log ride. There was absolutely nothing to prevent someone from standing up or reaching outside the car. I remember that accident. I had been to the park shortly before it happened. It was not the only injury on that ride. It was a fun coaster to ride, especially for kids as long as they didn't stand up. It was closed after it got a reputation. I was sorry to see it go.

Statistics for the United States From 1987 to 2000, there were an estimated 4.5 amusement ride-related deaths per year.[1] From 1990 to 2004, there were 52 deaths associated with amusement park rides (3.7 per year).[2][3] Every day from May through September in each year between 1990-2010 had an average of 20 injuries by amusement park guests under 18 years of age that required hospitalization.[4] In 2011, 1,204 people were injured at 400 amusement parks, according to the IAAPA.[2] In 2019, there were 1,299 injuries from amusement park accidents in the U.S.[5] If you are willing to gamble your life you should second guess getting on these flying death traps! ugh

There are certain key factors that play into the majority of all fairground ride accidents. Poor maintenance is obviously one, however, an equally significant factor that most people dont realise is "pretty girls". One of the most common factors is the male ride operators showing off to girls they fancy, and over-cranking the ride, or running it over safe tolerances. This has become less significant on high-budget rollercoasters, but if you are ever at a small or mid sized fair, and you see a ride where the operators are showing off to impress girls, DO NOT get on that ride. If there is going to be an accident that day, it will be on that ride.

I couldn't understand what was being said during the video at some points. Also....It would be nice if you guys showed pictures of the rides you are talking about with the people from the incident. Sometimes it is unclear what ride you are talking about specifically. Interesting video though.

Eight people died when a roller coaster derailed in Iran in august 2001 (?) No-one mentions this, the worst roller coaster accident ever. It was under the radar of the western press and it's hard to find details, but would be worth investigating !

The worst roller coaster I’ve been on was Pegasus at my Olympus water and theme park because it has turns that will slam you into the car and there is one final turn that will make you slam into someone. I hated the ride even from the start

I think you forgot about a little accident in a small City called Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Within the first week of installing their indoor roller coaster. It derailed killing three and massively injuring a fourth. HELLO!!!??

For those who are scared from this just know that these are 1. all pretty old 2. they came from small theme park trains. There has never been a death or injury at places like bush gardens tampa or like cedar point

The big dipper one was pretty bad as a whole for the reputation of wooden rollercoasters in the UK. I think the worst part about it was how many things all went wrong at the same time because they purchased second hand carriges rather than getting new ones. Coz not only did the chain fail, so did the breaks, which on that particular type of coaster, was built into the train and operated manually. And they failed. So yeah. And also, they place where they brought the second hand carriges from is still open and running. And oretty sure thy legally arent allowed to let their version of the coaster be demolished coz it's a listed building.

I still remember the Battersea Park accident. I didn't know the park had reputation with accidents before the accident in 1972. It makes you wonder how it stayed open for so long.

No point in advancement when maintenance isn’t done done , and rules aren’t followed . There has been at least 5 serious or fatal incidents since Covid. Mostly due to human negligence please don’t play down the risks. Yes it’s true most people are just fine but it does happen and the risk is always there.
