5 OLDEST JAMAICAN SCHOOLS And their history
Founded on May 21, 1729, Wolmer's Boys' School can claim to be the oldest school in the West Indies. This was the day John Wolmer made his last will and testament, in which, he left the bulk of his estate for the foundation of a free school in the parish in which he happened to die. The sum of his legacy was £2,360. Little is known of John Wolmer, except that he was a goldsmith who practised his craft in Kingston, for more than 20 years. He died in Kingston on June 29, 1729.

Saint Jago and Wolmer's uniforms look very sophisticated. Note how most of the better schools have smarter-looking uniforms; even the exterior of the school buildings have more sedate colors, which is good for the mental well being of the students. What you said about the Saint Jago school of long ago, shows how many of the truly poor whose parents and grandparents were enslaved and who truly deserved to be educated, were cheated out of it by corrupt school and Church officials. It reminds me of a current situation in the US where an older white ex athlete, worth tens of millions of dollars, was caught getting millions of dollars of money that was appropriated for the very poor, many of whom were black. Access to education in Jamaica appears more equitable now.

I can't believe that underdeveloped arcade and parking lot was the original location of Wolmers. It is a shame how they treat that part of the gift of Mr. Wolmer., even though the trust has grown immensely.

Thomas Manning died and left his will years before John Wolmer. It is only because of politics and delays at the assembly that Wolmers was built before The Mannings School. Otherwise The Mannings School would be the oldest school in Jamaica.
