❤ Maybe as part of your Lenten penance or fast, please pray for: Ollie, Ann, Anne, Stephane, Kevin McKay, and everyone in this channel afflicted with illness, disease, or cancer. May our divine physician Christ Jesus embrace them and heal them all. You can make a difference through your prayers! ❤ The more we pray for them, the greater their healing. ❤ St. Augustine: "Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works. If you see a poor man, take pity on him. If you see a friend being honored, do not envy him. Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eye and the ear and the feet and the hands and all the members of our bodies." ❤ St. Teresa of Avila: "Remember that you have only one soul; that you have only one death to die; that you have only one life, which is short and has to be lived by you alone; and there is only one Glory, which is eternal. If you do this, there will be many things about which you care nothing." ❤ St. Francis de Sales: "If you wish to make rapid progress in virtue, let your principal practice be that of the presence of God - your penance and mortification be to endure the great trials, sufferings, and persecutions which you meet from creatures." ❤ St. Padre Pio: "Love and fear must go hand in hand, and yet not be incompatible. Fear without love is timidity; love without fear is presumption. Fear when there is occasion, love always." ❤ St. John of the Cross: "In order to arrive at having pleasure in everything, desire to have pleasure in nothing. In order to arrive at possessing everything, desire to possess nothing." ❤ St. Ignatius of Loyola: "When one finds himself hard-pressed and in straits on account of certain temptations and tribulations, let him take refuge within the secret places of the wounds of Christ crucified, and let him gaze upon those five wounds as if they were five inaccessible fortresses." ❤️‍🔥 Luke 5:32 "I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance."❤️‍🔥 ❤️‍🔥 Luke 13:3 "I tell you, unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."❤️‍🔥 ❤️‍🔥 Matthew 4:17 "From that time on Jesus began to preach, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.'" ❤️‍🔥

💖 "Let Lent Be Lent!" 💖 "I believe that one reason so many have opted out of the Church is that our presentation of the faith has become superficial, unreal, nicey-nicey. Not everything has to be chirpy and upbeat in the religious order. Let's cultivate “cathedral space” in our lives and not permit the secular and the ordinary to dominate that space. Lent is, par excellence, a time of prayer. Let Lent be Lent!" Bishop Robert Barron ✝️ Viva Cristo Rey! ✝️

Whoah I was just thinking the other day, trying to come up with no meat meals is kind of fun. I'm learning new dishes, but also we have some favorite we mostly only have during Lent. I use to think that Lent was a chore, but the more I learn about God, the more eager I am for this time of year. It's like working in my normal everyday life, in different ways for and with God. And it just so happens that during Lent there are two birthdays. My Nephew and my Mom. We used those days to have one thing that we gave up for lent (food wise), and use that day to rejoice in Gods gift of Joy.. That is what Jesus was (is). Jesus's life was a Great gift of Joy sent into this miserable corrupt world. So, we celebrate the Joys God sends, expected or unexpected. It's actually pretty a fun time, not only that but spending time reflecting on Jesus and His love for us.. Not to bad either. It surely feeds the soul in grand ways. Such as... Two years ago during Lent I felt the push to get out more and "do" something for God and others (and a little for myself). That is what lead me to volunteering at the Basilica in Amsterdam.. I've been there ever since praising God for the great gift. And this year... while reading my selected religious book... I felt so compelled by what Jesus was saying... I gave up a sin I've been holding onto.. I even treated it like Sodom and Gomorrah and didn't allow myself to look back. I looked forward at Jesus. and Man! I feel so much better now. Praise God! I love Lent! Walking my life With God is awesome! Praise his Holy Name!

I love this sermon. One day, working on the radio making ads, I said to myself, "I can't believe I'm getting paid to do this."" As you may know, DJs don't get paid that well, but I believe that this is one way that we know we have found our calling; if it's honest work, if it supports you, if you're good at it, and if you enjoy it so much that you wonder if you deserve your pay. Later in my life I thought nursing was my calling, but trouble began after I complained about the poster in the class celebrating Margaret Sanger. My grades were top of the class and I had two mental breaks from the stress before I withdrew after asking my teacher point blank if she would let me pass. I said OK to our Lady and she guided me to do creative things on the computer. Two years later I was working as IT in a cartoon studio with famous people and friends I've made for life. Again I could say, I can't believe I am getting paid to do this.

Oh Father! How refreshing to hear taking care of ourselves as a penance! There is toooo much doom and gloom, with some Christians. There is someone I met who was telling people about God's Justice and that many people will go to hell. But I say, God's Justice is LOVE, MERCY, KINDNESS. And soooooo many people NEED GOD'S LOVE to come to Him. Oh, how refreshing to hear that penances can be LOVE!

(Eccl. 2:24-26) There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God. 26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Before the fall, Adam and Eve were in a garden and I can only conclude they were meant to enjoy it...by exploring, by learning and appreciating things and ultimately they were to glorify and thank God all along the way for all He had made for them... The devil wants to steal, kill and destroy... So sometimes when I see individuals that are too busy, stressed, and miserable to enjoy life i know the devil has succeeded in his purpose. Part of spiritual warfare is to enjoy the gifts God gave us, and to do so despite the devil's efforts to ruin everything God made for us to enjoy.

My generation of Catholics were taught that in Lent we had to make meaningful penance, by giving up the things we enjoy, or unnecessary luxuries and or consumer indulgences and we were encouraged to challenge ourselves for the forty days to going without and fasting and to a rethink of how we lived our lives and whether that was in alignment with our Catholic faith. Also, by foregoing our usual treats and commercial spending, we were encouraged to put that money into Project Compassion for charitable causes overseas under the umbrella of Caritas Australia. Today's Sunday Mass in Adelaide celebrated it's 60th year and it is the second largest NGO in the world. This was started in Adelaide and still continues to grow today. The object of going without for Lent, was to learn to exercise self control over ourselves and our negative and destructive desires, so that we could walk away from various material temptations and learn not to exploit others, not just for Lent, but throughout our entire life. And the money raised assisted other communities in the world experiencing dire situations. The penances you propose are indeed very gentle and mild. 🙂

@@faithfilledheart they're still around today, and going strong. Every Lent we've had either Project Compassion boxes, or weekly envelopes. One large food retailer in SA puts out the boxes on it's checkouts so that customers can contribute if they want to. Then they help raise money for St Vincent de Paul and other sustainable projects for homeless housing and even for some hospitals as well, for Christmas. It's a living tradition here. 🙂

So glad I seen this! For a long time I thought that committing to prayer and God meant giving up my hobbies. I was afraid that I have invested all this time into my hobbies only for it to be taken away. I really believed that God wanted me to spend most of my time focused on him and only doing spiritual things. But I am glad to hear that there is still room for things that I like, and that God actually encourages it. I recently picked up skateboarding and I am excited for this Summer! It'll sure keep my guardian angel on its toes with this new sport 😅

This is brilliant, Fr. Mark. Not only is one making the sacrifice to move away from laziness, but also, in many cases, to challenge the fears we have, that often the devil puts in our way, to keep us from living the life of grace God calls us to in order to benefit and make happier our own lives as well as those of others. How difficult to overcome these vices in order to live in God’s joy. I never thought of penances in this way, but you are absolutely right! What a beautiful thought to give God the joy of accepting the joy He wants to give us. Not always so easy, but worth the “penance”. Thank you for you words and your joy, Fr. Mark!

I beg to differ with you Father. With all due respect, penance isn't play time. It is serious business..... ❤ Joel 2:12 - "Yet even now," declares the Lord, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning." ❤ 2 Corinthians 7:10 - "Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death." ❤ Matthew 4:17 "From that time on Jesus began to preach, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.'" ✝️ According to the Baltimore Catechism: "Penance consists of prayers or good works assigned by the priest, to make satisfaction for our sins and to help us avoid future faults." ✝️

Our justification does not come from ourselves and no matter how much we mortify our souls to try to be approved by God, otherwise Jesus would have died in vain for our redemption. (1Corinthians 1:30) But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us WISDOM, and RIGHTEOUSNESS, and SANCTIFICATION, and REDEMPTION : ... (2 Corinthians 5:20-21)... We pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. 21 For He hath made Him (Jesus) TO BE SIN FOR US, who knew no sin; that : >> WE MIGHT BE MADE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN HIM.

@@DogtownTradingCo Following Christ does not mean trying to earn our salvation by afflicting ourselves with penances! Christ did not die and rise again for us in vain! : (1 Cor.1:30) But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is MADE UNTO US wisdom, and RIGHTEOUSNESS, and SANCTIFICATION, and REDEPTION: 31 That, according as it is written, He that glory, let him glory in the Lord. (Ephesians 2:8-9) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the GIFT OF GOD: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Isaiah 58:6-13) gives a very good description of what God ultimately seeks from each of us . Note: Religions seek to establish salvation by works of all kinds and yet the Bible says: (Rom. 4:6) Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,... Shalom !

Sports and recreations and hobbies are not (and shouldn’t be 😂) a penance by definition. These things are antithetical to a “punishment” (unless you are a weirdo and overdo them in every possible way😅). Father Mark, these examples you give are part and parcel of everyday life for many, these would be “paths of least resistance” as penance and hardly can count as “Lenten fast and penance” things😅 - try *harder* !😊

I do not comprehend Father's suggestion when compared to the teachings of the Catholic Church for the need to do some sort of penance to amend in some way, even though inadequate, for our sins and the sacrifice and suffering of our Lord. Nor do I understand the comments here that approve of the idea.
