I can't believe I paid one of the 'big sites' to teach me this and they sucked at it. Then I find this nice humble guy who's an amazing teacher. Thanks Mr. Walliman! And to boot your video is 5 years old and still incredibly relevant! I'm going your site to buy something to show my thanks...

Yo, me too. I'm a fairly accomplished guitarist, and I even play a neo-classical two handed style that is fairly advanced, but I've never had a teacher, and everything I've learned, I found it with my ear. From time to time, I'd sit down and see if I could learn the basics of standard tuning & blues (I use a lot of open tunings; especially Open C/Drop D), and for whatever reason I couldn't do it. I couldn't figure out what they were teaching I guess, but this guy... This guy puts it out there perfectly for my brain to absorb. I learned every one of these licks in time, by the end of the video. Well.. I paused it a few times and rewound, but it didn't take me more than 30 minutes to get all these licks down. I'd never had success like that.

Amazing someone created a Pentatonic lesson that doesn't focus on the A minor pentatonic!
@trevorcarl9515
@trevorcarl9515 4 жыл бұрын
If you can't move the pentatonic scale all over the neck, you're making the mistake of learning specific scales in specific spots. Learn the notes on the fretboard and how to construct scales instead, then practice in different keys. Even if you're playing based on memorized patterns, you should at least know what notes you're playing. People focus on the A minor pentatonic mainly because it doesn't contain any sharps or flats so it's easier to talk about.
@dankay7982
@dankay7982 4 жыл бұрын
Huh? The letter in front of the "minor" doesn't matter at all. Whether it's A minor, G minor or D minor - the positions are always the same. One difference is the open E minor pentatonic scale which is slightly different since it uses open strings. Other than that, A equals B, equals C, equals D and so on.
@brianwood8516
@brianwood8516 4 жыл бұрын
@@dankay7982 sure I get this now after some independent learning, but as a beginner that's not clear in this video (or a lot of them) - nor is it the instructor's angle - just noting that at the time of trying to learn pentatonics to *not* see Am was refreshing.

Hi, David, Great stuff! A small question: the seventh note in your first G minor pentatonic lick is shown as an A#. It should really be a Bb. Same tone, I know. I see this error in many online lessons and wonder if it’s just some quirk of the notation software.

Just a notational nit: in G minor, I am really used to seeing B-flats instead of A-sharps. Also on the descending runs, I would have chosen D-flat over C-sharp a few times there... But that's just me! Nice work!
@difab4n
@difab4n 7 жыл бұрын
I think the reason the high D sounds 'different' in example 3 is the offsetting of the first G by a sixteenth note, then the consecutive 4ths, then landing on the Bb, creates a different tonal center from G. The high D is a departure from the different mode established though I can't identify the mode either!

Fret board diagrams like the yellow one have always created tension when trying to learn from a diagram. It ends up looking like a mess of dots on the neck and I end up avoiding trying to read the info being shared. This one looks easier because the notes are highlighted, but I've seen a lot of people who are teaching who don't highlight the notes to be played, they give the root notes, the 3rd, 7th and so on.

People can do this fast as well, the way I practice is I go through the entire scale all over the fretboard, then I do it again dropping notes making it the pentatonic, then I do it again in the blues scale, then I do it again in the harmonic minor. Only takes a few minutes once you get used to it. I haven't added the melodic minor yet.

Hello David! Do you have any pointers on how to practice playing over chord changes? I know what scale fits this and that chord, but although I can do it to some extent, and try to play what´s in my head I feel like stuck in arpeggios . Playing dorian for 23 minutes backing tracks doesn´t seem to work. I see myself here, and Giant Steps and hot women on the other side of the cliff, and no bridge. IS there any book that guides youfrom here to there? Thank you, arigato, merci, gracias for these awesome licks, awesome teacher, awesome player.

A small point if I may, (and I know it is pedantic but it - - - kind of isn't at the same time!) When playing in Gmin the basic Gmin triad is G-Bb_D. It isn't G-A#-D. Many will say it is the same thing but in proper notation it isn't at all. The fretboard map alongside the video accurately shows this but the treble clef notation of the lick below does not. It really would be better if it were written in the key of Gmin (Bb-ish) with two permanent flats B and E at the start after the 4/4 time signature. You don't need the confusing sharps (flats) and unnecessary naturals later in the music. If guitarists are going to learn to read from normal notation just as you are guiding them into, isn't it only a small step further to get them used to the full correct expression of the key signature? That's what they are going to come across if they progress beyond this.
