We have seen some of the finest players in the world head over to the World Cup and look so average. Some have had their careers ruined or changed completely as a result of this competition.

Andres Escobar is obviously the biggest one. But what about Roberto Baggio? He went into USA'94 as the best player in the world. He missed the penalty kick, and was never the same player again--internationally. He stayed on with the national team, though, even as a veteran, but he was never the same.

He also carried his team to the final scoring with only minutes left to tie Nigeria in the round of 16 then the game winner in ot. Scored in the closing minutes in quarter final to beat Spain, and scored 2 first half goals in a span of 10 min to beat Bulgaria in the semis. All this after nothing in the group stage. He wasn't fully fit for the final and people often forget 2 things from that shootout. Of the 5 Italian pk takers, only 2 Scored and even if Baggio had converted his, Brazil would still have won if they made their fifth kick.

David Luiz' career was not ruined by the World Cup but his quality of sleep for the rest of his life was probably ruined. Even today, he still plays high-level football and helped Flamengo win the Copa Libertadores. That said, I'm not sure I've seen another player concede so many goals in big games.

People got unsympathetic towards him because he called erdogan „my president“ at the heights of a strong refugee crisis conflict with many human rights violations between turkey and Germany. Erdogan is an authoritarian and stands against all European values. Özils „alliance“ with him and the fact that he doesn’t sing the national hymn is what made people strongly dislike him. Get your facts right, Özil behaved stupid and I won’t blame any person who isn’t fond of what he said and did

From WC2018 onwards he's not been viewed in the same way as the seasons leading up to it sometimes viewed as ManUtd's best player now he's seen as more of a calamity and he made mistakes which cost Spain goals in that WC I.e the first game 3-3 vs Portugal. He'd still be 🇪🇸's keeper now if he was being raved about like before.

4:03 meeeeh... I remember the 2014 World Cup pretty well, and Özil wasn't a standout performer at all. He played really bad, in fact, despite his great goal against Algeria on round-of-16. But I agree the hatred torwards him because of his 2018 performance was completely undeserved.

I would like to comment that David Luiz did found retribution. Yes, he left Europe to go to the Brazilian League, which on the eyes of some European's means that he will retire on a low notch. However, even thought he lost his prime, he is definitely one of the best Centerbacks here in Brazil, even winning the Copa do Brasil(Brazil's Copa del Rey) and the Copa Libertadores(South America's Champions League), and being one of the key players for Flamengo. David might have lost it all after 2014, but his carrer is not ruined for good. Also, fun fact, Flamengo did a 7-1 themselves in Libertadores this year, so he felt what a Black-Red team doing a 7-1 feels like.

As a player of the German national team, Özil shouldn't have given this demonstration of public support for the Turkish president who internationally known for hus totalitarian way of ruling the country. David Luiz literally put up the worst defensive performance in the history of the WC and you blame Marcelo? 🤣🤣 Just look how he used to make horrendous passes and used to step up to get the ball back only to be exploited in the space left behind. It's one of the first lessons you learn if you play CB i.e, to not commit. Marcelo on the other hand is a Wing Back. His job is to attack when the team's in possession of the ball. Ozil was ruined around 2013, after all he missed vs Dortmund in the Champions semifinal. In 2014 Germany played most games with 10 players, since Ozil did nothing
