When foraging, poisonous plants are important to know and in this video we'll cover 5 different ones for you to look out for. Plants like Jimsonweed can look like a couple other edible plants but it is a dangerous poison. Its leaves look like other nightshade species but it is far more dangerous to consume. Blue flag Iris is a very beautiful plant however it often grows next to cattail and it looks very similar, so it's another poisonous plant to avoid when foraging. Common Dogbane is useful for rope making but can be confused with Common Milkweed so it's important to know the differences. White Snakeroot is commonly found growing along other edible or medicinal plants and can look like Wood Nettle, so we'll give a good comparison between the two.

Thank you for this video. I live in central Indiana so I can recognize these plants, but didn’t know that all are poisonous. Now I know!

I made a double misidentification. I thought blue tansy was yellow Yarrow. I went to gather some in spring. There was also poison hemlock in the area, which looks a lot like blue tansy when it is small. I made tea of the poison hemlock, and strangely didn't feel any ill effects. Possibly because it was the small young leaves. It was actually very mild. I didn't realize my mistake until later that year when I saw the plants fully grown. Sometimes I wonder how poisonous the things we are told are poisonous really are. Not going to push my luck though!

At first glance, I thought it looked similar to an indeterminate tomato, and then you said nightshade. I’ve seen these around, but had no idea as to the toxicity of the seeds. Thank you very much for keeping us informed! Great vid.

Jimson weed messes with your pupils one will be dilated the other one tiny as a needle just by me and my sister taking pictures of them and admiring them very potent my sister was freaked out she went to the emergency room thinking she had a possible brain tumor. My pupils went wonky too but not as bad as my sisters.

If Im out around the plant when its hot and muggy I have felt light headed but I'm very sensitive to the nightshades I don't eat them because I get reactions to them I think there could be something let off when it's hot Just like when you break tomato leaves I'm sensitive to that too

Jimson weed grew all over the place in southern PA where I grew up. It was foul-smelling but gorgeous, and was probably the first and most frequently taught poisonous plant, second only to poison ivy. We kids would wonder and joke about the terrifying potential effects, but we all knew better. None of us wanted to experience virtual hell, with a side of potential death, (and actual hell)... ...mthrfkrs had me scared to death of death, and god..

It's good you guys were taught about it! I've had to tell multiple people who were looking for a quick high and wanted jimsonweed to NOT try it. After relaying the effects and the experience I've seen after some tried it, they thankfully backed off. Trust me when I say it's terrifying and while I'm not into making people afraid of plants, this is one I don't particularly mind instilling some fear about, at least for those looking to get high off it.

How do you touch the nettles with your bare hands? Did you just get used to the stings?
@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 27 күн бұрын
While I'm pretty used to the sting, I use another method to not get stung as much which allows me to touch them without getting stung, most of the time. The hairs orient themselves in an upward pointing position, generally speaking. So by grabbing below and then slowly raising my fingers I lay the hairs against the stem instead of directing the tips into my skin. This avoids the stinging most of the time. There will however be a wayward hair or sometimes I don't get it quite right or I accidentally touch the underside of a leaf and get stung that way. I'd say 80% of the time it works 100% of the time, lol!

The Butterweed? Yeah most likely. There are a couple other possibilities though. One would be Field Mustard and the other possibility is Wintercress. Those two will also have yellow flowers but have 4 petals typical of mustard species.
