As usual, fantastic lesson Johnny! I just wish I had seen this last week because I performed both Autumn Leaves AND Smile at church and I really could have used that diminished trick on both those tunes! (Especially on Smile, because that 4 bar long 1chord at the beginning needs alterations)

Love your content, subscribed! I'm a metal guitarist that needs this stuff for accents in my recordings. I took piano & music theory in high school in the late 90s so I should know this but I'm rusty! Thanks for what you do!!

In section of Drop In Diminished, there's a progression C-Eb-Dm-G, mostly it is a C Am Dm G. So is Eb a tritone substitution right?

If i play for example E G C, it could be a C Major on the second position but also it could be an E dim b13, to going in F Major for example.
@jake_ams3 ай бұрын
I am a bit confused - are you using everywhere own terms in the videos instead of the music theory terms? For example, you call it a diminished sus chord - but isn’t it a C Major Chord with the added 6th? This wouldn’t be a sus chord as sus4 is F not A? I might be afraid to learn terms that are named differently 🎵
@PianoWithJonny3 ай бұрын
Great point; there's no actual chord called a suspended diminished, but it can be arranged in a way to behave similarly to a sus chord. This post goes into full detail: pianowithjonny.com/piano-lessons/diminished-chords-5-essential-piano-techniques/

Wait…Pls, is it 3 diminished chord per scale(or octave)? Of it’s 3 diminished chords on the entire piano?
@jammymichel3337 Жыл бұрын
@ Emmanuel Markie Morris 3 diminished 7 chords on the piano. After you learn the notes in the C dim 7 chord, C sharp dim 7 chord, and D dim 7 chord, all the other diminished chords are inversions of those 3.
@Schollii689 ай бұрын
He meant there's only 3 dim7 chord finger patterns. Technically there are 12 dim7 chords per key, but 9 of them are just inversions of the first 3 of the scale in that key. You still call them whatever makes sense in the progression. Eg a Cdim7 and a Gdim7, harmonically same chord, what's the correct name? There isn't one except if the voicing or root note matters.
