The industry will always be shifting. The key is to not think that big tech companies represent the entire industry.

I haven't borrowed money since 2006 and have been debt free since late 2008. I have 6 months expenses in a money market account for emergencies. Last December I was notified my contract wasn't going to be renewed and I was unemployed 3 days later. I spent 4 months without a contract. Didn't matter. Life's a lot different when you're sitting on a pile of cash, no debt and a paid for house. There's nothing on this planet I want badly enough for me to go back into debt to obtain it. Instead of being stressed out, I was mostly at my cabin bow hunting, shot a nice 11 pointer and got some woods projects completed. I thoroughly enjoyed my time off. I was still aggressively looking, don't get me wrong, but I certainly wasn't stressed out about it.

Thank you Tim, everything you have said here is spot on. As a tech person I cannot over emphasis the importance of building a portfolio and continuous learning.

Always be in “casually open to new opportunities” mode, regardless of your job or contract status. Don’t wait for the whim (or management failure) of whatever entity you’re working with. Keep a hired gun mentality always, which automatically keeps many concepts in this video front and center.

I lost my job when I was 21, and since then, I've always planned as if I could lose my job tomorrow. The downside is the constant worries it creates throughout your life. I live in the UK, so we don't have big tech worries like you guys do in America. But since Covid, government change looks likely here, so those concerns are back on the agenda, 100%. I was always advised to check the Jobs Market every so often and learn those skills too when you can. I've found that helpful because it's ultimately near you where you'll be employed. Thanks for the video, I always enjoy listening to these.

Happened to me recently. I was looking for a job for 4 months, but found a great one, because I had enough resources and I was choosy.

Thanks for the video. I lost my job last month and am doing everything listed so far. One thing I didn't expect was the number of jobs that are looking for JavaScript UI Frameworks, and when talking with them, finding out they really don't need them, so I have been training on them to add that to my experience. Another thing is the amount of bots reading resumes, and humans are basically the last resort if you have stacked enough keywords for the bots to find you. I would be open to freelance work, but networking in a smaller town for tech work is much more complicated, and that was what helped me get work in a bigger city.

Definitely stay in touch with your fellow co-workers that helped me out 5 yrs ago when I was laid off, I messaged a guy I worked with years prior he told me he had been promoted to IT Director and had an opening so I sent him my resume, and I was hired, in 2 weeks.

When you say that software development jobs are increasing. I would think that with ai, that software development jobs would actually decrease because computers can do those jobs. would you even be willing to consider firing all your employees and replace with ai? would for sure be cheaper. even at this years build conference, they are talking about many improvements to ai.
@IAmTimCorey
@IAmTimCorey 2 ай бұрын
Nope. I've addressed this in several videos. AI doesn't replace developers. The only people who fire their developers in order to replace them with AIs are people who do not understand what AI does. Even the AI demos that supposedly do that (like Devin) are faked.

My husband and I live off of my salary and all his goes to pay for debt and vacations. We are hoping to be out of debt by the end of the year. Then we can start investing his income. I feel more comfortable living off of one income.
