Try to get 8th grade, they are still kind of like kids but still kind of like high schoolers already. I have taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grades and by far prefer 8th grade the most. Good luck 👍🏻

I’ve always said I either want to teach 4th/5th grade or middle school. Some of my favorite teachers were my middle school teachers. I prefer the content in that age group more than high school or lower elementary (language arts).

Yes to being able to have your fandoms! I tell them everyone is a nerd about something! I find my middle schoolers are the best combo of the innocence of elementary schoolers and confidence of high schoolers. Plus, they know how to hack the district’s wifi!

I’ve taught 7-12th grade and I can totally relate. I’m back at the high school level and love it, but middle school gets a bad rap. The kids are so sweet and genuinely like their teachers. High schoolers can too, but they make you work for it a little more. 😂 As long as YOU love your students, that is the right grade to teach.

It’s great teaching an age that are able to see things from someone else’s point of view like you mentioned. My perfect age group is 9/10 year olds, but at the moment I’m challenging myself by working with younger (7) of course every class has its own vibe anyway! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I love the pastel colour scheme of your room. I bet the kids appreciate having an inspiring work environment!

Great video!! I can tell you’re a fantastic teacher. Your students are so lucky to have you. I absolutely hated middle school when I was in it, because I felt so awkward and self-conscious and confused. When my own kids got to be middle school age, I was shocked by how cute and funny they and their friends were! Now I’ve starred substitute teaching and I’m considering becoming a full-time teacher. I’ve only substituted at one middle school class so far, but I was surprised by how much more I enjoyed it than the elementary class I substituted for. Middle schoolers have this awkwardness and lingering innocence about them that is just so stinkin’ adorable and hilarious! It can be a difficult age for a lot of kids, especially girls, so I think teachers have so much opportunity to have a positive impact.

Thank you. I needed this. The last 3 weeks of school have been the hardest since school started this year. (nowhere near last year--my first year--though.) I've been feeling like my 8th graders were gunna kill me--litteraly sat down on the floor mid lesson because I was just done and over the behavior. Your school and my school sound like night and day environment wise, but the stuff about the kids was very good to hear.

I love this ! Simply because I'm gonna be teaching 5th-13th grade and I LOVE the differences. Granted, 7th and 8th graders can be scary but I like how you're able to witness the differences in grade forms and how kids become teenagers which then become young adults. I love it. Each grade has their own pros and cons.

@Accidental genius It's a privilege and so special! You really do form bonds with a good chunk of students and I'm genuinely rooting for them. You should do a video on advice for people who want to become a middle school teacher/advice for new teachers. I work as a teacher assistant in a middle school and I’m working on getting my teaching license. I would love to teach middle school level language arts. Before I got this job I was very nervous about working with middle schoolers because I would always hear the worst. Since working in one and getting to know the kids, I absolutely love it! I am open to working in other grade levels but this is definitely my favorite! One thing I really like is most of them really like to help out even if it’s something small like straightening up the room, passing out papers. All the points you made are very accurate. Most of the kids have a lot of passion about things and it makes them so happy when they get to express that in what they learn. I also see at least half a dozen of my students every single day even when their class isn’t that day, and every single time they say “Hi/good morning miss *my last name! How are you” or if they’re too far away they always smile and wave. In most of the classes especially the larger ones, there’s at least a few students who always ask when he or she isn’t working if I or the main teacher need any help. And when I do give him or her something to do the kid (and often a few classmates they get to volunteer as well) do awesome. Some kids who get to class early or come in during their lunch period when they’ve eaten will just find something to do like fix the chairs without being asked and it’s great because one class currently has 58 kids! That means lots of chaos so being organized is crucial for any hope of being productive

I know that this is an older video, but let me just say, teachers like you are the reason why I’m excited to enter sixth grade (ahhh, middle school!) this coming August. Throughout causing myself and family extraneous stress with entering and entirely different school and social environment, it’s a comfort knowing that encouraging staff, like yourself, are truly committed to what we get out of those dreadfully awkward three years! Love this! Someone has to teach them. Better to have teachers that actually care about them than teachers who would rather be somewhere else. I'm in Australia and I am primary (elementary) trained but have taught junior high (grade 7 to 10) for over 10 years. I often get comments from other teachers that year 9 is a waste of a year. These same teachers complain when they get kids in year 11 and don't know as much as they think they should. I feel like saying "how about you take a few classes and teach them properly then" I agree with everything you said. There is so much to love about these year levels despite the challenge they bring. On a side note, I feel like teaching year 9 Maths on a Friday, last period is the extreme sport of teaching. Hahaha!

I’m about to start teaching 6th grade language arts, which is a change since I’ve been an itinerant teacher for the past 8 years. I’m so excited. Last year I had a 6th graders say, “I like this character because he has plot security! There is no way the author would kill him off!” I thought it was such a cleaver insight and so succinctly stated from a young mind!!

When I accepted my current job I was a bit scared because I never taught middle school, but to be honest I am so happy I am teaching it. It's true what you said that you can start to see their personalities form and how its interesting to see them make their friends. When I have to do 7th grade dismissal the girls always hug their friends when they are leaving and I think that is so cute. I also have many girls that are "fan girls" lol when I told one of my classes that I love all things Hello Kitty, Little Mermaid, and Kawaii most of my students were so excited and ever since that I have two girls that come to my classroom every morning and give me a hug and tell me how nice my hair or outfit looks. I've been told that as long as you relate to the students they will warm up to you and that is so true. I'm loving middle school and plan on staying in it :).

We don't have separate middle schools in Australia. Some P-12 schools have a junior, middle and senior sections, but not separate campuses. I taught Yr5 in a "middle section" and my Year 5's were amazing. I teach Year 3 and 4 now, and what you say about your middle schoolers is exactly how I feel about my school babies. They are funny and smart and self-motivated and problem-solvers. They haven't gotten inappropriately sassy yet, and I adore them. So far they're my favourite year level. I would happily be a Year 3/4 specialist for the rest of my life...but that's not going to happen. Truly, I'll love whomever gets put in front of me, but 3/4's are amazing.

The thing is I didn’t even do anything that serious.... these 2 kids wouldn’t let me see the paper in a GROUP project so I didn’t get to do anything besides a maze paper (I’m in 8th grade) and she started yelling at me about getting a zero and giving all of my other group partners a 100, and I got a little.... frustrated. Then she emailed my coach about my “unacceptable and completely utter” behavior.

I have many times in the past (it's usually the girls). This year I don't think we've had any yet. The school I'm currently at has a really positive environment, thankfully!

I would honestly never teach middle school. Ever. I would rather be poor, starving and homeless than deal with the vicious little brats they can be at that age-i have not a single happy memory of middle school because of how people treated me so i have zero patience or tolerance for the behavior middle schoolers display towards eachother. Bully someone, you will wish you never met me, and bullying is very common in middle school-and i don’t look good in orange, so i think i’ll stay away from them if i can so i don’t end up smacking someone upside the head for being a bully

It's certainly awesome being young and beautiful. But, what if you're a 50-year-old male career changer? My guess is things are different insofar as ageism in hiring, and other factors.

“Teach like a girl” lol how can you not? When teachers in elementary through middle school is predominantly women by and large. There’s a huge lack of male teachers. We have all this push for women in all these male dominated fields but absolutely no push for getting more men in these fields. I can’t stand to hear teachers that are so partial to females when boys are struggling. Dressember, fangirling, Ariana grande, mostly everything you said was favoritism of girls. Sorry to rant, I appreciate your insight but more teachers need to be aware of the discrepancy.
