5 Reasons Not to Buy FiTech EFI System

I give my top 5 reasons why you shouldn't buy the FiTech EFI system.
I have put a few 1,000 miles on the 400hp FiTech Efi system. Enough time to see the issues and week points of the system.
1. Self learning tuning is so/so, fitech does not list there software updates.
2. Not enough info on FiTechs website, you have to go through forums to learn how to tune.
3. Cheap/bad connectors going into the hand held, get in the way and fall out.
4. White screen on start up is intermittent.
5. Gauges on hand held do not automatically show up after start up and poor graphics
I am not a tuner and you may have different issues or you may not be effected by these issues, so please don't blow me up if your system runs differently.
Thanks for watching and I hope this info was useful!
Check out the FiTech system for yourself.

I wish I have run the system with and without the filter. No difference to the issues I had with heal toe shifting. I was impressed on how well the system did when I went from no filter to this filter. It adjusted quick and kept the AFR's the same even with the added vacuum.

Great video , but here is a tip on your tuning problems. These throttle body FI systems will never run correct on a dual plane intake. You either have to remove the intake and cut the divider out of the plenum or install a open plenum manifold. A easy test would be to put a 2in. spacer under the FI unit and try it before you remove the divider. You can watch the enginemasters series where they test a Holly TB FI and see the problems they had also.

Put the same system on my new 351W crate motor. 350 hp, four speed in a 1976 F150. I didn't have to do any tuning. Just the initial set up. I just drove it. As it learned it ran better and better. Also I live at 5700 feet. I have a little over 500 miles on it now. Runs great! No white screen. Large gauges stay displayed unless power has been removed i.e. Dead battery.

Really, you guys have some great ideas. Especially, especially, air flow in, out (intake, air cleaner, etc. ,big exhaust etc. ). Me and my friend put a hot Cam in his old power wagon with 318 v8. we did air cleaner, intake, 4 barrel etc. it only gained a little. We knew we still had to open the exhaust, so we added a 2.5inch dual exhaust, it must have gained 100 plus HP! Obviously, the exhaust was choking everything else! Anyway, it all worked out. I have a Rochester q jet on my old 1979 Chevy 4x4 truck, it runs amazingly well for such a simple device. I'd like to upgrade to fuel injection, like FI tech, or Holley Sniper. What do you guys think, is it worth it to me? Thanks.

Petrol360, I had a big problem with an extreme lean condition on tip in (getting back into the gas at part throttle) with a stock vortech 350. I found on a forum where a guy tricked the fitech by telling it it was a much larger engine. I was at my wits end with this thing so I gave it a try. I ended up using 502 cid and it worked! I'm using a 5 speed manual, and as youve seen this problem rears it's ugly head even worse than an automatic. I had to cut the fuel learn way down after doing this as well. It's sticking to the target afr even at that setting. I have the same unit you do and after several months it's finally running good. Don't give up just yet

White screen is a voltage issue. It doesn't necessarily mean your connections are bad. Just means you're losing voltage while cranking. If it drops below 10 volts while cranking it'll kill the whole system causing your white screen. Could be something as simple as a weak battery or bad ground. Fix this issue and you won't have to unplug your handheld all the time and reset gauges. For your "heel toe" issue, since your car is a manual DFCO cut map and return map are likely set to high. And since these systems do not have CFCO this makes DFCO all the more important. Try setting DFCO Cut map to 16. DFCO return map to 18.
@jacobdavis1979

It could also be a combination of Map accel and tps accel along with dtps.

Iv been playing a ton with the DFCO settings but I think someone found the issue I was having. There is a firmware update and my unit is an early one without the update, fitech doesn't list the update on there website or anywhere for that matter. But one of my subscribers sent me the update so im going to give that a try soon. As far as the white screen I thought the issue was low voltage but when the batter is almost dead when its cold out I don't seem to have the issue at. I listed the connectors being a reason just because they suck not that they were causing any issues. They fall out when you move them, and they com straight out the top so you have a hard time finding a place to mount the hand held because they take up so much room. Just kinda a bad design on there part.

@jacobdavis1979
@jacobdavis1979 6 жыл бұрын
jfkdotcom Lol there is more than one way to have a bad voltage issue. White screen issue is low voltage regardless of where it comes from. Bad battery, worn out starter, crusty battery terminals, or defective Fitech harness. Just some basic examples of what it could be. Eprom ecus, OBD2 pcms, even MSD boxes don't like low under 10 volts.

I installed a MSD atomic and had great performance at full throttle, but experienced decel and idle concerns. I integrated the spark timing and all my problems went away. The ECM can rapidly control timing to compensate vs fuel / air. Sorry, but that would mean you upgrade to the better FiTech system. You would have to also buy what is referred to as a "ready to run" distributor, remove vacuum advance and lock the mechanical advance plates as well. Good luck.

Weird ive been running the fitech 400 system on my 302 stock in my bmw. I of course had to tune out a little on the afr side but didnt really get any trouble out of it. I do have to run it a lil on the richer from preventing system starvation it gives from being at a high bank sometimes when i run the oval. I do heel toe to engage sometimes and havent ran into a no response throttle when decel , but once in a while heavy throttle and fast decel (prev before running it a lil richer) it would die out. Let me know if u want me to pass my settings just in case u wanna try them.

I’m using the FiTech Go EFI 600 hp on my SBC. Online support has been OK, phone support was excellent. I agree the connection to the handheld programmer could have been designed better but I understand it is not designed to be used as a permanent dashboard, that is what gauges are for. I bet your performance issues go deeper than the EFI system. I thought my EFI wasn’t working correct, turned out I had a leaky intake gasket.

I’m actually an air/fuel specialist for performance engines. Other than purchasing the tune upgrade there’s a couple things you should do if you want to get your best efficiency out of the engine. You should open up your ECU/PCM whatever you want to call it and tune your specs from there to get the fuel dialed in to the engines needs. And if you haven’t already, put a digital ignition box on it so you can control your rpm’s depending on how you’re driving it, that should take care of the shifting issues. But a must do before anything else is to put the inline FiTech fuel-pump offered by FiTech for that specific system along with a pressure regulator. In my opinion that’s your issue. I could be wrong but that’s just some advice.

I had Fitech 600 hp and it failed. It wouldnt support fuel over 6000 RPM. And it always hard start spent 4 months talking to tech and they were rude. So they sent me another one hooked it up started just fine the first night the next morning I turned the key on and the ecu went up in smoke and fitech won't send me another one

A lot of cars shut down the accessory power supply when cranking, the ignition power supply isnt the same one as you have this running from would be my guess and you see this sort of issue with cheap gps units as well. Part of the economy of efi is the fuel cut off on decel, so if you want throttle response on decel, then of course you have to disable it. Part of tuning to your preference is to understand the system and your cars system. Nice car :)

I actually took mine off and bolted my BG 750DP back on my race car the other day because I was getting dead spots on hard acceleration and it wasn't a pump shot issue because the only way to cure it was to roll out of the throttle all together and then reapply it. only once in every 20 minutes of racing! weird . my carb never did this, and really poor service and no info or comprehensive manual.

The white screen issue is low battery voltage during cranking. Either you battery is close to its use by date or you have a voltage drop. The best FiTech resource is “FiTech Owners Group” on Facebook. Also as others have said that air filter is way undersized and well past it’s use by date.

hq308dotcom Interesting that low battery possibility. Many vehicles can have ECM issues because the battery can't provide enough current for the starter and the ECM. A big fresh battery with clean connections may solve your problem.

While it is a self tuning unit, really all’s that is there for is to give you a base tune and if you’re looking for performance you won’t see much difference compared to a carb.

@@Petrol360 depending upon where you drill, the cast may not be real thick. So only run the tap half way up the taps threads and check for sensor thread fit. Pipe threads are tapered, so if it's tight, run the tap down further and it will 'open -up' the threads. good luck !!!

Unfortunately my unit was hooked directly to the battery for ground as well as I added three grounds to the throttle body itself. One to the motor another to tthe body and the third to the battery. I believe the unit was an early production and just had issues. Still not very impressed with the product although it did work and do what it said it would do. Im really looking forward tto these efi systems to develop and improve into something that that works better then what is available now.

I had this same unit on a chevy 283 and was unimpressed. I didn't really have any terrible problems but it certainly wasnt plug and play, never buy a carburetor again like I was expecting. Cranking time was about the same as a carburetor. Fuel economy was about the same as a carburetor. Driveability was about the same as a carburetor. You know how you replaced your quadrajet with a holley when you were 16 to be cool and tinkered with it for about a year and got it running pretty good for the most part and you felt a little bit of improvement in power or driveability with each jet or squirter change but there was always still a little bit of tuning left to do... this is like that. Probably should have just left the quadrajet alone and made sure the choke was adjusted and the thermac air cleaner was working properly. I put about 10,000 miles on my fitech unit. I wouldnt take the time to leave a bad review on summitracing but I wouldnt buy it again. Id either buy a quadrajet or an ls engine. GM, FoMoCo, and Chrysler seem to have worked it out better than the small companies offering affordable efi units.

I would definitely stay with FiTech, but go with the 600 horse power version. Change your intake and air filter. Get a single plane intake manifold. A good set of headers and 2 and a half inch dual exhaust. So your in another couple grand, but you will be so happy.

Iv installed a Holley sniper unit (but don’t have the truck running yet) and I think that its a much better unit. It offers much more in depth tuning capacity then the Fitech and better customer support. In contrast the Fitech unit I had was a very early one. Hopefully they have improved the design. But simple things like Holley using can bus rather then two data plugs is a sign of how much more thought and time went into the holley system.

I have compared a Chevy 350HO crate motor with a Holley 850ish carb and the Fitech Forcefuel for 400hp. The carburetor was 100x better because it allows so much more fuel to flow through. The fitech lacks so much power and actually made the car a lot slower. It is fuel efficient! Less fuel = less power. With that said maybe it would be different if I bought a higher hp fitech system.

Thanks buddy for the great advice. Your not alone either there is a guy who has a shop in Tennessee and is sponsored by fitech and edelbrock. They both gave him a free system to evaluate and report the findings. He installed the units on 2 of his early 70s Broncos with 302. Unfortunately he wasn't given a Holley sniper kit but after watching his relativity long detailed video he concluded that that fitech system is junk. Same issues you reported. Terrible tuning device with blackouts and he had other issues with surging. The Edelbrock system won hands down. No problems at all fire it up and go riding around for it to tune. I'm really thinking about installing an efi on my 83 Chevy k10 pickup and I'm kind of thinking Holley sniper the 400 hp version with the fuel pump, Filters and everything including great tech support to help regular guys like us get through the installation. I'm thinking spend the extra $200 for the Holley even though I'm going to sell my metal lathe to do this I'm not a wealthy guy lol

For the temp sensor, run you car sensor wire to the sensor for the unit, they should both be able to read the temp.
@Petrol360
@Petrol360 6 жыл бұрын
I wish you could do that but the temp senders, but two gauges reading the same sensor would lead to both gauges reading only 1/2 the real temp. You would need to get a “smart” sensor to be able to do something like that and im sure the FiTech would not support that.
