I have a situation that you didn’t mention (not really) I was looking forward to another experience of breast-feeding for a good long time, but my infant son passed away. I am pumping, but it’s not the most comfortable thing, and I’m not doing it as frequently as I would if I was trying to feed an infant. I am contributing to a mothers milk bank. I wanted to do this to honor my sons life, to help keep me grounded and eating well, and to help my body get back where it needs to be.

Thank you so much!! I've been looking for a video like yours. Growing up I remember my mom never used a pump for my little brother. But I've seen so many videos on KZfaq and social media promoting pumps that I thought I needed one. Pumping looks so exhausting and time consuming. I'll be a Sahm, so I'll keep my pump on the self for now 👍

I didn't even take my pump out of the box with baby #1 and I always felt kind of like I was slacking on part of my job! But after 15 months of successfully breastfeeding him I know I was just blessed with an easy breastfeeding journey with my first baby. I'm now 10 days away from having baby #2 and she has 2 separate genetic conditions that will have us in the NICU for about 5-6 days and I'm preparing to pump this time around... Thankful we have these tools so readily accessible!

I've been binging your videos lol. But I just wanted to respond to the slight rant you had about stashing tons of milk or moms who suddenly realize they have a ton. For me, one of my two reasons for wanting to pump is that it has been a dream of mine for a while to be able to provide milk donations to milk banks. The milk goes to premature or sick infants who really need the antibodies and other benefits from breast milk, but perhaps their mothers are unable to provide. But I also wanted to put this out there for the moms that just happen to have too much frozen milk. You can always donate!

What if you have one boob the kids prefer and won’t nurse on the other is it ok to pump on that side after they nurse on the other side so that I still have milk in the fridge or freezer so that I can go on date nights or appointments

Not really a pump question but a breastmilk question.. do you recommend the milk collectors that go in your bra? I’m a SAHM so my goal is to breastfeed and not use a pump (it just seems very overwhelming to me to have to nurse and pump, and I also had latching issues with my first son so I got overwhelmed and gave up unfortunately so I never got this far with breastfeeding). I would only wear the milk collectors when I’m out and about or at appointments or should I just wear nursing pads for those short times? I only want to have a small milk stash like yours to use in baths etc or have dad be able to do a couple bottles here and there so I don’t necessarily want to save every little drop. One more question I have, would you recommend only pumping, pump into a bottle and feed baby right away out of that freshly pumped bottle? I’m worried that if I can’t get a good latch this time I might turn to a pump to make it easier but I have heard the pumps don’t empty your breast as well as baby does and can make your supply drop or go away completely.

I didn't have any milk in the freezer with my first two babies. I do want to have a few feeds worth of milk in the freezer for my newest baby. I never really understood the freezer full of milk for moms who are mostly feeding at the breast.

Hi Allison! So here I am with my 2 week old/3rd child and I am told by lactation I need to nurse, supplement and pump at every feed. He’s already at birth weight and he just had the lip/tongue tie procedure done yesterday. My milk supply is pretty good (I think) but he still takes anywhere from 30-60ml of milk from the bottle after I nurse him. I want to exclusively breastfeed and stop pumping so much. At what point can I stop pumping? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks! 💜
@RiceFilmProduction
@RiceFilmProduction Жыл бұрын
I can’t remember if I saw Allison mention this or other lactation consultants, but that formula baby gulps down is not necessarily hunger cue, it’s their sucking reflex. They will drink that bottle even if they are content from breastfeeding. Since he’s at his birth weight already, I think you can stop supplementing now. You don’t need to give the bottle as long as he’s producing decent amount of nappies and keeps gaining weight.

Hi! Thanks for this video! I have a question I hope you can help me with. I have 5 kids and have never weaned a baby, I ran out of milk at 10 ish months with the first two. But I was not that worried and it. My supply started dwindling around the 3 m mark with babies 3&4 nothing I did helped bring it back up and my babies were so angry at the lack of supply they would bite, which caused my stress around nursing to go up and my supply to go down more... & I gave up...) Here I am with #5 wondering if I should use a pump to keep up supply before there is a problem? Or just focus on taking care of myself to keep up supply? (I do think I got pretty worn out with babies 3&4. 4 was born when baby #1 was 5 1/2...)

More about baby#5... Baby 5 spent the first 8 days in the NICU. Pumping went well and I she transitioned to breast well when we got home. But she is little (6.4lbs) and not demanding much right now. Because of my history I'm worried about keeping up with her needs

Hi there! Question. I’m planning on breastfeeding exclusively and I’ll be home with baby for a year. But around 4 weeks we do want dad to give baby one feeding a day (not necessarily nighttime) so that she can learn to take a bottle. I wasn’t sure if pumping would be necessary if it’s only for one feeding or if the haaka would collect enough on a daily basis to give us the milk we need. Thoughts?

Hi Allison, thanks for making this video. I want to know that at hospital the nurses start saying we need to start pumping right away. If I am not planning to use pump regularly moving forward just hakkaa when needed. Do I need to start pumping in the hospital? Their reasoning is sometimes if baby won't latch immediately you can't produce milk that effectively in couple days. Please advise, really important to know. Thanks

I also have a question, my LO is a sleepy eater. I still feel full after she eats an I stimulate her an switch but I still find that she stops latching after just a small amount of time after trying to see if she wants more an I pump after an only see a loss of about 2 ounces when she usually eats about 5 (she’s 3 months) I’m worried she’s not getting enough to eat she’s gaining about 2 pounds a month so I think I’m okay I’m just worried Should I exclusively pump or keep trying to exclusively breastfeed? My pd says as long as she’s peeing I’m okay I just want to make sure she’s getting enough tho

I had an emergency C-section for my first baby ten years ago. My milk didn’t come in for a few days after and I was always behind on her feeding needs. I desperately wanted to breastfeed and this was devastating for me. Second baby wouldn’t latch and I was already scarred from the first time. It didn’t take long for me to give up. I’m pregnant again now and I want to breastfeed more than anything. I will be having another C-section and I was hoping to get my milk in while I’m preparing for the birth. I thought maybe a pump could help me get the flow in. Any suggestions?
@RiceFilmProduction
@RiceFilmProduction Жыл бұрын
It is the birth of placenta that triggers the milk coming in, so your milk won’t come in before birth. You are producing colostrum now. It is what the new baby will be eating from you before your milk comes in. It is the case for every mom. It will be there, don’t worry.

I had mastitis with my first child and pumping just a little with a manual pump helped a lot. I can see why you don’t recommend full on pumping, but pumping a little to relieve some pressure can make a world of difference. With my first child, I kept pumping and thinking I had to pump. After a month, I gave up and got lazy. Unfortunately, my daughter learned to prefer the breast over a bottle and we had such a hard time getting her to bottle feed when I went back to work. So I’d say it’s good to pump a little if it helps your baby transition to a bottle.

I would like to add another reason, with a bit of a story. When my son was born I had a plan to exclusively feed on demand. In the hospital, three hours after my son was born the midwife came into the room, looked around frantically, and said, "No one has brought you a pump yet, and told you how to use it?! I got out the word no, and she rushed out of the room, a nurse stormed in a couple minutes later with a giant pump and told me that it is extremely important that I pump every 2 hours for twenty minutes and after every feed, 24h a day. ...I had just had a baby, and was exhausted, and just did what I was told... I was so exhausted. After 8 weeks I stopped producing milk all together, and it was devestating.

What the heck… what was wrong with them… if baby is latching and transferring milk well then why pump? Pumping every 2 hours is pumping exclusively, which can be your choice but should only be your choice to make.

6th reason not to pump: Because they dont make a pump that actually feels like a baby!!!!!! All pumps are super painful and uncomfortable and leave the nipple swollen and sad. So until these companies stop making crap products and actually produce some kind of baby tongue movement (they have plenty of robotics that can do this simple movement) then feel free to boycott all pumps!!!

I wished I would have watched this video before starting to use my pump. The only reason I pump is because my mom told me to start building a freezer stash before I go back to school but my school schedule is only going to be two or three days the most at school however I only want to pump here and there or at least once a day. I also made the mistake of watching other videos of other moms and they made it seem like I would lose my milk supply if I didn't pump right away in a tight schedule every 2-3 hrs. I was going crazy at the beginning because all I wanted was to sleep w my baby and feed her on demand. Thank you for this video!! life saver and now instead of pumping I can have a few more hours to sleep when my baby is too :D

You’re never empty :) always making milk! Whether or not you need to pump depends on a lot of things, but if things are going well, a pump may not be needed. If they are not going well at the breast, it would likely be a good idea. Hope that helps!
