Hello my future rushees! Today's video is all about the reasons a sorority might drop you after the first round. When I went through recruitment I was always confused as to why I would get dropped from a house where I had a great conversation and had a lot in common with who I was talking to. Well, after joining a sorority I learned the reasons why this happens and I tell you exactly what those are in THIS VIDEO! Thanks for watching and as always comment down below some topics you want me to make a video about next :)

On the west coast we’re trying to get rid of recommendation letters and legacies! This is because these give unfair advantages to people who’s families could already afford college and takes away from new generation college students! I hope other chapter lean toward this system as well and the people watching this video know that ever school is different and you will find your home :)

I'm so excited to hear this! I am so happy sororities are making changes so they can be more inclusive. I love that they are doing everything they can to give everyone the same opportunity to join a sorority!

I have a 4.0 and was super involved in high school and I’m a legacy and had a letter of recommendations and was still dropped by my top 10 houses after the first round The sorority I wanted it doesn’t do special considerations for legacies anymore but like I said I had a letter of recommendation from an alumni.

I rushed at FSU in 2013. I had two letters of recommendation for a particular sorority from members of my family. I was considered a double legacy. I was the top of my class in high school. I still was dropped after the first round. 10 years later it still affects me if I think about it.

I had a 4.0 gpa coming into rush week from high school and I was still dropped from one house the first night. I asked my Rho Gamma why that happened and she said most likely it was because of your GPA I controlled my emotions for the rest of that conversation until I said bye to her for the night. After that I talked to my mother about that and was upset it wasn’t like I wanted to be apart of that sorority but that lowered my self esteem because I knew I work hard for that GPA and I also have a learning disability on top of that. I am glad I found the right sorority for me in the end but GPA should not be the only thing counted against I didn’t even get a chance to have a conversation with any of those girls that night I was dropped.

From experience, I would say the #1 reason girls are cut after the first round is grades. In my sorority, that was the only reason we could cut girls in the first round. Sometimes, it would be a "standards" concern, meaning they did something bad (drugs, drinking, bad photos on social media ect.). Also, a lot of sororities are changing their legacy policy because of the movements going on in todays world. They are trying to make sure all women have a chance to join their choice sorority. Because of injustices in the past many women were not allowed to join NPC sororities, so these changes to policies are insuring women who are not legacies have a fair chance :)

Weird, I had wayyy above the minimum GPA from High school when I rushed and was dropped from 2/3 sororities after the first day when I rushed. I think if your school is like mine and recruitment is 3 days it could be more than just grades. I think sometimes you’re unlucky and the girl you are assigned to speak to just is not great at socializing.

@@laraelkady3212 Wow! Yeah that might be the case for smaller schools and shorter recruitment. That's so unfortunate!

A lot of the time it’s because of looks too. Sad but true. Yep, I said it. Many sororities cut girls they don’t consider attractive enough to be in their chapter.

So a few sororities (like mine) have come out and said, as a matter of policy, "no special consideration for legacies". Honestly, I think that is fair, even though it would be super fun to have my daughter in the same organization as me. But its better that she get into the house that really wants her, rather than one that feels they have to take her.

I just finished my freshman year at a community college and will be transferring to bama in the fall. i plan on rushing, but this last year but extremely stressful and difficult for me. i moved all the way from chicago to alabama, it was super hard to find friends and overall find motivation to do well in school. my gpa dropped from a 3.5 to a 3.0. do they look at my high school gpa at all?? i’m normally a really good student, and i know i’ll excel at bama in the fall. it was just a super hard year for me after moving and not having any friends.

What do I do with my letter of recommendation? My Moms friend was in this sorority and I was wondering what I would ask her and what i do with the letter (whether its an online email or paper)

If you have good grades and houses still drop you, they probably dropped you because of your looks and/or weight, which is absolutely terrible, but true. If a sorority drops you because of that who would want to be in that anyway, so if you get dropped, just say fuck them and try and be positive moving forward.

At the University of Washington Seattle legacies have been dropped as a criteria as it was obviously biased. GPA IS important though as it's a strong school with an ambitious student body. The Greek system is actually pretty diverse, there are lots of Asian and Latina sisters. I think Black women should try out more because Sororities want to diversify and be less exclusive. My eldest daughter wasn't sure if she wanted to rush because of the idea that Sororities are racist and exclusive. She ended up joining a Sorority and loves it. She is in a diverse and very chill chapter who also do well academically. She made two best friends, one of whom is 50% native American. Their Recruiting Leader this year is a Black sister. Sororities can only change if more woman from diverse backgrounds join, and Sororities, at least in Washington State are very welcoming.

It depends on the school. My school has 6 and I ended up getting a bid to one that I didn't have any recs for. (I only got recs becuase my mom's friends wanted to write them but I know lots of people who had no recs and still ended up in sororities.)

Hi Lexie! Do not stress about only having one recommendation letter. Rec letters don't automatically give you a bid to a sorority, I still got dropped from houses I had recommendation letters for. Having recommendation letters just gives sororities a heads up that you are going through recruitment and tells them that alumni think you would be a great member of their particular chapter. I would have to agree with what Ali said, that the importance of rec letters does depend on the school. But even at big schools like Alabama, a lot of girls receive bids to houses they didn't have recommendation letters for. Don't stress at all! Sororities are SO excited to meet everyone so just have fun and be yourself :)

What about non traditional or older students? Does that come into play when deciding to drop a pnm?

Great question! Those qualities definitely DO NOT come into play when chapters decide to drop a PNM. I actually went through recruitment as an upperclassman and it did not hinder my experience at all :)
