Ole..loved every single bit of it....so much to do, culture is amazing...women are beautiful ....flamenco, wine, guitar, bars, loved bullfighting .....tons and tons of amazing history....beaches, the cities and the people are very warm, kind. loved it....they have everything there....mountains, hiking, loved it....the people are beautiful......."mañana" they live longer because we in America are burdened by work and let work be our slave master. they know how to live life....we in America do not....yet.

I'm being stationed in Rota, Spain as my first duty station and I am so thankful Every. Single. Day. It was my dream to travel and I couldn't be happier. I thought it would be a couple years until I could apply here. I've cried because I worked really hard to get to this point, and I've gone through a lot in my life, but because of the military I am able to start living my dream, and every day I am surrounded by caring, fun people and my life is never dull. I wake up with a smile on my face, ready for the challenge of the day. Thank you for sharin, these help and I'll probably get a bike!

I worked in Rota for 6 years as a civilian at the Public Works Dept. You are so correct about the relaxed atmosphere on the base. Everyone got along. When I moved back to Philadelphia, I was on I-95 commuting home from the Philadelphia Shipyard. I almost pulled over to catch myself, because the traffic was flying past so fast that I was more than disoriented. I was downright frantic. The food was amazing. Ou fav was a steak house in San Fernando. The owner was Spanish and his Finnish wife did all the cooking and she was fantastic.

Perhaps it might help if most Americans knew that Spain is in Europe and not somewhere between Puerto Rico and Mexico. How far it is from Madrid or Barcelona is almost inmaterial. Shoot me down if you want, but I lived in Rota and Subsequently the US. If I had a dollar for every time I had to clarify where spain is located geographically and the fact that Spaniards are Europeans, well I would not have to type this!

I think the relaxed culture you talk about is what Europe is as a whole. I was fortunate enough to travel through Europe back in June and noticed that it is very low stress and working-class friendly. My dream would be to be in Naples, Italy. I loved being in Rome (Roma) and would love to actually live in Italy.
@prorace_type_r4 жыл бұрын
It is in general a Mediterranean countries thing. People in northern Europe usually say the same thing that you do when coming to Spain, that is more laid back and it seems that northern europe is more work centered. Also a different family concept (personal elder care is more common than northern europe, for example having your grandmother living with you instead of in a nursing home) and a more outdoors way of life maybe. Those are good things from spain, one downside could be the lack of entreprenurial mindset, most of the people want to become a public worker, and also general corruption in the population (tax avoidance and papers falsification to receive helps etc are really extended in Spain). I have lived abroad in Northern Europe and I definitely would like to see society getting the best from those 2 worlds.

I was stationed there from 1975 to 1978. I can't say where my billet was but I can say it is no longer there. I rented an apartment at 29 Capitan Cortez. It had a gated passage to the beach. One major problem back then you were not allowed on the beach after dark. I have heard that is no longer a law. Across the narrow street was a Tapa's bar. Had the best pinchitos in all of Spain. Then 2 doors down was a liquor store.

I grew up in rota and I remember how I loved the times I could enter in the base specially because how unique it was to have the chance to try American food restaurants and seeing how different the streets look compared to the town of Rota. What is a little sad is how Americans barely seem to interact with locals, I lived there until I turned 18 and almost never saw Americans interacting with anyone I know and I’m pretty sure it was strange to see them outside the base, I guess they had all they need inside the base but it could have been a great experience to see them more interested in meeting the local people.

Question, Back in 1991 while stationed in Germany with the 3rd ID, I drove to Spain (1989 Pontiac Grand Am from the states) to visit family living in Torremolinos. And was not allowed to enter base (wanted to buy some Campos Gas Coupons) by the Spanish Guards at the Checkpoint. Did speak with the American Officer Of The Day via the phone, and was told no because I didn't have the required I.D. card of which only those stationed at Rota get. Was this true? I have always wondered about that. In Germany there was no such policy, as long as you had a Military Issued I. D. you could go on any post. Also, the Officer I spoke to via the phone that day was a total butt. The gate I drove up to was remote, not main gate I remember. I had just left Jerez, so maybe that will give anyone who was stationed At Rota a sense of direction as to where I was that day. Anybody with an answer please respond. Thanks!
@amodernphoenix4 жыл бұрын
Rota is a Spanish base, not American. I was stationed in Rota beginning in 1993 and at the time, it was the only foreign military base to permenantly house US military commands. They did have special passes for cars, though you should have been able to walk on the base. Our actual IDs were the same as everyone else. There were two gates back then, the main gate and the second one over by base housing. For what it's worth, if you had walked on the one you were at, you'd be far away from anything you wanted. That was all inside the main gate.

That's especially true if you go through a difficult time and need sometone to listen to you pour your heart out. But there's a Spanish adage, "Every head is its own world" Meditate on that for a while. That's just 1 example. Cross cultural wisdom sharing is a treasure you can't buy.

Hey Rob! Sadly I have left Rota, Spain but my heart is still there. You'll likely find it at the beach drinking a strong spanish drink. I hope you enjoy it!

Since I finally retired for good I started researching the space a flights.I went to the flight terminal at nasni to gather the info on that.I have to find out if they have flights to Rota. Hey just wondered do they sell TVs and bicycles there like Mildenhall? Is there a furniture store also on base?
@NICKYMGTV6 жыл бұрын
Kalle Sauerland there is a bike shop off base called Antonio’s I believe. The base has the standard department store bikes too if you don’t want to get a nicer bike. Also there is a furniture department on base but it’s quite large so just make sure it will fit a Spanish house if you live off base.

NICKY MGTV o cool they are the shopexchange bikes? They got TVs bro?
@editek59926 жыл бұрын
The NEX sells TVs...and stereos and computers. Just need to be aware that if you live off base the voltage is different and you might fry some of your electronics.

Hey Mate, I’m from Australia and I am visiting Spain over the Christmas holidays, I was wondering if the base hosts tours for visitors? Thanks
@NICKYMGTV6 жыл бұрын
Harry Wetherill so I haven’t heard of any tours happening on base. Honestly Rota is a total beach town for the summer. If you are looking for a great time rent a car and drove to Seville, Granada. Valencia, Córdoba, Malaga, and marbella. I promise you won’t regret it and it’s a beautiful drive.

I got out of active Army last yr & I took the oath for the Navy reserves on 1 Nov 17 (as prior service active duty wasn't an option). I got to keep my rank so I'm a BU2 & I was given the E-6 Bib today & was told I was taking the exam in Feb 18. Not having completed A school yet do you have any study recommendations? Resources other than the NAVEDTRAs? For builder there are a 1000+ pages of information. Thanks.
@NICKYMGTV6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Emmanuel this is why navy advancement is “difficult”. Honestly you’re at such a foundational level idk if it would be beneficial during A school to even study for it to be honest

Matt, I build highways for a living. Ambrose's Simplified Engineering by Parker any addition. Civil Engineering Reference Manual by Lindeburg. American Concrete Institute. Asphalt Institute. Some Schaums Outlines. these would a good start.
