Should you reject the job offer? If you see one of the job offer red flags, you need to decline the job offer to save yourself from a toxic work environment, or just a situation where the company is taking advantage of you! One of the hardest things job seekers have to do is decline a job offer they have interviewed and invested time to get. Knowing how to evaluate a job offer and spot the signs that you should decline the offer of employment can save you a ton of stress and drama. Yep, that's a strange demand, @David Ellis. I kinda get it for some scenarios maybe but for most jobs I would expect it to be a paid break if they want you to be onsite.

1)When the recruiter drops off the face of the earth. 2) When they place you on a unit/in a department you're not trained for. 3) Chaotic & disorganized training period.

A few years back, a company offered me an initial hourly wage of $17/hour. I accepted and worked for 2 weeks until I got my first paycheck and saw I was getting paid $14. When I spoke with the boss, he said there must have been a miscommunication, but $14 was the initial pay for everyone, and could not pay more than that. So, I quit on the spot. Because one dishonest action like that means you can never ever trust them on anything. There's no point negotiating with crooks.

The rate should absolutely be outlined in the offer letter and you should expect to be paid what they said!

The same happened to me as a welder. They offered 19 to start and then payed 17.50. I threatened to quit on the spot and they fixed it.

Same here I was offered $13 and payed me $11 for my first paycheck. I quit and they fixed it make $15. Me getting comfortable not checking my paycheck for months and noticed a declined. Realizing they decreased my rates for $13.25 for two cut-offs already talked to the store manager then fixed it again. Now earning $15.25. As much as I'm feeling quitting and all. Still grateful to have a job and the fact that problem regarding mass resignation. Company's are still choosy and its not easy to find one. Need to stick at the moment

I have learned that if interviews are scheduled in a desperate manner meaning quickly and with lots of pressure placed on the interviewee to comply and the interviewers are either overly excited and/or appear clueless as to what questions to ask, best to say no.

Yes this can absolutely be a red flag. I know when headcounts open there is typically a sense of urgency because they probably needed to hire like 2 months ago, but putting undo pressure and rushing a candidate rings alarm bells.

This is true and I have fallen right into this trap. The 2nd company I applied to was too eager to interview me and after the interview I got the job offer in just an hour and they needed a response within 24 hours. Since i was a fresh grad and also excited that I got the job, I immediately signed the contract. I was given 3 days to complete some of my pre-employment requirements before i start the following week, but that was thrown out of the window and I was suddenly rushed to report to the office immediately. First day of the job I already started working without even proper orientation, training or turnover of duties, and it was hell trying to figure things out with little to no one to help me. 3 months later, I just handed over my resignation letter due to burnout, depression, and deep job dissatisfaction. The company had a toxic workplace, the management is very disorganized, a lot of shady things happening behind the scenes, I got sexually harassed a couple of times, and my job as technical assistant turned out very differently from what was advertised, and I became instead an executive assistant or secretary, doing mundane, mind-numbing tasks that are totally unrelated to my science degree. Just after handing my resignation, I am now being given the silent treatment by my boss and I am not allowed to leave until i complete the 30 days notice. And yet these days I am a sitting duck with no tasks given but just answering calls and emails.

I got a job offer and i went to glassdoor and indeed to read reviews. A few people said the company was known for lay offs and no job security didnt matter who they were. That was a major red flag and i didn’t take it.

Yesterday I got offered a job where I only had a phone interview with the HR Recruiter and that's it. That had red flags all over it. Despite being unemployed for a month, I still declined it.

Not sure if this is common. During the interview, they give you a tour of the office(empty office suites and cubicles), coworkers(not being friendly) and the environment(no one talking to each other and avoiding eye contact). You get that feeling of cold dark and corporate.

I had a job that gave me a job offer in the interview but didn't give me a tour. If I would have just walked into the back rooms I would have saw all the mean coworkers, shoddy equipment, and smelled the drugs. So yeah, tours > words.

I most of my jobs I never even know all the other employees and definitely not become friends with any of them. It does not hinder my ability to program (aka my job, I am a programmer). I do not have time or desire to chit chat, I do not drink cofee (so no cofee breaks). Much more common situation than you would think, why do you consider this a problem?

Don't accept if: 1. You're not interested in the job offer 2. It doesn't align with your UOQ 3. It's a bad job offer in itself 4. Having a non disclosure agreement 5. Long delay in benefits 6. Intelectual property ownership 7. They fail your due diligence

I should have turned down a job offer when I worked at my last employer, the red flag was when the bosses where scowling at me, requested a 2nd interview, had me feeling pretty low about myself after leaving the first interview. I accepted it and 5 months later I had a breakdown & left, not worth it

Hi Jennifer - I had an interview where I knew right away I didn't want the job. Because this relieved all the pressure I aced the interview & was offered the job the next day ! I told them thanks but I had taken an offer already. I still benefited from the Q & A. See Ya 👋

I actually just got let go from a hospital job as an inpatient therapist. However, right from my first interview I knew something was off. The employee reviews weren't so great, saying that there's a lot of toxic people, supervisors play favorites, there's gossip, etc. Even the way staff documented notes were subjective to who was training you. When I'd have check-ins with my supervisor, I'd tell them this (about the documentation) & they would gaslight me. They even did it today on my last day. Even the hiring & training process was so unorganized & messy. It's a relief that I'm done with them, but I'm pissed about all the gaslighting. I'd make all the corrections they'd want me to make then still tell me I was wrong.

@@JenniferBrick As a therapist, I greatly appreciate the video. I see that you're here in NYC? I'm on Long Island at one of the Northwell Health hospitals. Don't get me wrong, my former coworkers are great with the patients on the unit, but it was just so filled with gossip & I dreaded going in everyday. Thank you for everything you do :)

When I got the job offer, I decline due to the low pay and wasn't being paid for my experience. I thank the company and the next day, the company sent me another email, asking would I consider the job with this amount. They raise the wage and accepted. If a company can acknowledge their mistake I can accept to meet them in the middle. I have found the company friendly, helpful, collaborative and interesting.

Oh, I got one some years ago, for teaching classes. $7.25 an hour, no benefits, no guarantee of hours. This is not a misprint. I called and declined quite pleasantly. She called back and re-offered at $7.50. I got a little snippy (OK, downright mean) and told her I wanted a paycheck, not a f*#&ing honorarium.

It was early in the pandemic and I was desperate for anything, so I accepted a salary in the $30,000-$40,000 range despite my work experience and education. Now I'm making more than double what they were giving me at an organization that respects its employees. I have videos like this to thank for encouraging me to make that move!

On Friday, I had someone call me to schedule an interview and they started out by telling me what the starting offer is. It's what I am making now and I want more. I am worth more. At first I accepted it and scheduled the interview but then I paced around feeling not great about scheduling it. I called her back and declined the interview. It basically told me that they had been interviewing and no one was taking the offers so they had to put it out first before they continued on. I do want to leave my job badly but am not desperate.

Hello Jennifer. I just wanted to say thanks for the valuable information you are giving on your channel. Today after a month of searching I finally found my first job ever and it is perfectly aligned with my expectations. For the last month I have been on trial periods in two different companies and it didn't feel quite right. I almost signed up a contract with the second one, but declined the offer last minute when I got a call from my current employer. It was a tough choice since I didn't even know if they'd accept me. But everything went well and I am so happy I had the courage to give up that opportunity for a better one.

My question is what should you do when you feel you had to accept something because you needed income coming in but it is bad fit and the money is not that good. I recently accepted something and now totally regret it because I needed income coming in and it was done over zoom and I did not get a good idea what the environment would be like. The people are nice but in a room with tiny cube like had in grade school and the other day they said a prayer (it is a religious affiliated hospital) and I had to clean up the toilet after someone used it, not that it was expect of me. Now at a loss because I left something else quickly after losing a job after nine years due to covid-19 if I leave this too I feel really stupid.

Last year I revoked an acceptance on a job offer partly because the commute by driving would disrupt my sleep schedule, but also because after the offer was signed, the recruiter left the company and I was left in the dark without onboarding at all. I decided to go thru another interview process and accepted that offer instead. This second offer was for a remote opportunity which the first one didn't guarantee at all and had a higher salary. Fast forward to this year and I read the first company's Glassdoor review. I concluded i made the right decision to revoke my acceptance.

I'm unemployed since September '22 (the old company fired me because, well... it was either that due to them pressing me to forge legal papers and me repeatedly saying "no!" or going to jail for actually forging the papers) and I've had just one job offer as a draftsman in an Engineering company. A temp job, three months, with a leasing company that would lend me to the firm itself. It was to be well paid, but the contract was so mindnumbingly bad to read that I couldn't make sense of anything it was written on it. I had to ask a work lawyer, he didn't understand anything either and the leasing company told me to sign it in 24 hours. Mind you, the interview had happened only a few hours before, in the morning, and in the evening I already had a contract. Major red flags all over.... I didn't sign. The leasing company's personnel was angry at me because of what they saw as paranoia. Three weeks later, the job offer has been reposted, for the same company. I am unemployed still, but ain't stupid.

Decades ago the job I was offered and accepted was not the job I ended up with the day I started. Should have simply went home that day to work on finding another job, but I didn’t. I stuck it out for months knowing in my heart that the voice screaming at me was my own! Eventually, I just stopped going into work. I was exhausted and tired of the lies, toxic boss and general BS. Advice to my younger self: listen to yourself. You know when it’s right or wrong. First indication was not only the job I said yes to was given to another, but I was not taken to lunch the first day (huge!) in a corporate environment. As awkward as lunch with your boss can be, neglecting taken to lunch by your boss the first day is a HUGE red flag in my experience and for what I was doing as a career (media sales).

04:55 "The title and the terms of employment match what you have been discussing to date." That's exactly what happened to me at my previous job. They are the worst place I've ever worked for because they are so disorganized and dysfunctional. I applied to an engineer position, but the hiring manager told me to be a leader during the interview, and then the company offered me a manager position. The boss, a couple of coworkers and business partners are toxic, so healthy people have run away from there.

I'm blessed to have a step brother in real estate, rental and corporate contracts. I run offer letters, etc by him...so far, he has said all standard (non compete clause in that line of work, etc).

Just left a toxic job on Jan 24th after 7 months of them failing their initial promises. I am waiting at least 1 full week before giving a company review so that way it is honest and not an emotional review

I had a job offer given to me from like a quick phone screening late in the day. I could smell the desperation and they offered me 5K less then my lowest salary expectation for my range. They had a surge of work and were desperate. The fact that they offered me the job the next day was a HUGE red flag. We didn't even crack the surface in our discussion on more specifics with the company.

I was interviewed by a large pharmaceutical company. I checked reviews before head and found out they fire ppl for no apparent reason. I asked a recruiter and a head of department on the interview about it and got no clear answer. I was rejected. 7 months later I met a guy who was fired from that company, he said he was framed by another employee.

I will never understand why that one recruiter from the Pacific NW kept coming back with job offers. They were slowly creeping upward, but still. They couldn't get me offering cold crackers, so the next one offer a bit of peanut butter. The next a kid's cup of soda, the next a jelly bean. I felt like coming right out and reminding them I had significant experience. The recruiter was always curious why I would turn them down, not asking for a reason, just wondering why I didn't jump for joy at being offered a job with xyz company (I won't name names). Always reminding me I should be honored. Before I got the offer here they were almost, but not quite offering me a meal. They were still ignoring the cost of living difference where I was. I finally got to tell the recruiter that I accepted a job elsewhere. She was disappointed, but accepted it almost as politely as I kept turning them down. Perhaps by January they would have offered something worthy of consideration. But someone else beat them to the decent offer stage.

It's a shame I can't copy and paste a job description I got sent to me from a job board. I hold a clerical position in hospice. This position is with a crematory. Well, coming from hospice not a weird match until I read the description...massively long description. In addition to all of the standard clerical duties along with accounts payables and receivables.... Assisting with sales Cleaning the inside and outside of all company vehicles Driving families Cleaning the facility Vague wording about duties in the operation of the cremation room Clearing all snow and ice off of the property and vehicles (I live in the mid-west, so we get snow and ice) The list is even longer than this. The lovely, grand pay to do every single thing in the place is...... $13 - $15/hour. You can get a fast food job at some places or retail clerks and make that much. This is no small operation either. Probably the biggest in town. Needless to say, no way am I clicking on the apply button.

I got a really interesting job offer recently as a team lead of so and so. I felt like growing with this company, however it has slightly lower salary than my current. They hold 30% of annual salary and distribute it bi-annually. If I take that job, I will be pinching pennies for several months. I declined it because of my financial situation. It felt like getting rejected, and I hate myself for not having enough disposable income to support me in those penny pinching months.

You mention NDAs but also what about non-disparagement agreements? With the rise of anonymous online review sites like Glassdoor, I think more companies are trying to intimidate employees into not posting negative reviews online that they argue damage the company's reputation.

What if the company does not have an IP ownership and you are the creator of specific processes/infrastructure or development. If you want the company to obtain your permission to use your creation throughout the company, could you patent your own developments to avoid copyright legalities ?

What if everyone just ignored their non-compete agreements and did whatever they wanted vis-a-vis job transitions? How could a corporation have sufficient resources to prosecute everyone who "violated" these bogus pacts, anyway?

Do companies have resources to pursue against everyone? Depends on their coffers. If you work at a small or cash strapped company you might be able to outspend then in legal fees.

Read the contract. Some state that you are on the hook for their legal fees!

My new job make me an awesome salary offer and I was like, they want my kidneys! I accept it, because other places pay so little to unlicensed staff. And you know what, they really want my kidneys!😂😖 After 3 weeks now they are throwing things in like, Surprise!, your new requirements are this ones.😂 No bueno. Let's see what happens in the next 3 months. All my new co workers are saying they love it, I don't know what to think.🤔?

I got a job offer a couple of days ago! I was very happy but I decided to check on Glassdoor and google reviews before signing the contract.. and guess what? On 10 reviews 8 where negative and 2 positive (from 4 years ago). The most recent negative review was 3 weeks ago.. The scary thing is on the contacts they require a guarantor. If something happened( like I leak some company secrets), my guarantor has to pay 2000$.. (this is a part time job). So I decided to decline.
