I don’t know if you knew this, but oil was used back in prior centuries to prevent lice. As time went on, African American women began using oil to help straighten hair with hot combs. Oils helped conduct heat from hot combs and help prevent hair from reverting by being a barrier to humidity. In connection with straightening the hair, oiling the scalp became a standard practice. This was due to the fact that women went 2-3 weeks between hair washing. Not washing the hair frequently enough leads to dry, itchy scalp which is often a complaint of those who go a long time without washing or even rinsing their hair and scalp. The proliferation on store shelves of oils, cremes, butters, and grease for black hair care are all due to the complaint of dry, itchy scalp. Dry, itchy scalp is prevented by washing the hair and scalp. But those who straighten the hair don’t want water 💦 on it because it will revert. Sadly, people have adopted this same attitude for locs, believing that water will cause mold and mildew and that washing will undo their retwist. Some go longer than a month without washing. Mold and mildew can be avoided by using the correct shampoos and rinses that contain mold inhibitors like sulfur. It’s better to use these products on locs and wash at least once a week and thoroughly dry the hair than wait months before washing. Clip down retwists if necessary before washing to maintain them, but do wash the hair frequently.

I support this wholeheartedly. I’ve dramatically reduced the amount of oil I use on my natural hair and I don’t oil my scalp. I use the tiniest amount of oil or butter maybe 4 days after wash day just for lubrication. My hair doesn’t hold odors, it’s really fluffy and easier to style. I’ve definitely noticed way more hydrated hair and overall better experience with my loose natural hair. Thank you for this message

My scalp and hair loves oil. I have a really dry scalp and hair. And my hair grows from oils. But i dont use it everyday maybe twice a week. Or when my hair feels really dry. But if i can run my hand through my hair and i can still see a shine. I know it doesn't need oil right now. But this is me so just find what works for your hair. Different hair textures have different needs. It took me years to find mine.

I haven’t used oil on my locs in about 8 months and MANNN my locs are way softer, shinier, if that’s a word lol and growing nicely. I did it bc I kept getting acne on my temples and that’s stopped too. Now I’m getting rid of the gel. Did a water only retwist and I think this is what I’m on for now on ❤

as someone with Seborrheic dermatitis that is just starting their loc journey, I'm surprised to see a video like this pop up for me! I've never liked putting oil on my scalp because it made my scalp greasy, oily, and worsen itching. But when I would look for help every hair influencer, stylist, and their mama would say something about oil...ESPECIALLY in the loc community. I kept trying it and trying it even when I was a loose natural, but it never did what they said it was supposed to. The only thing I got was flake build up. I've started putting oil on just my hair and not my scalp, because when I first started, my hair was drier than I was used to. that's been helping so far, but I KNEW I wasn't tripping...oil and my scalp do not mix most of the time. and I don't want to go against my intuition just because everyone says to use oil.

girl yes!! Thank you for explaining the difference between moisture and hydration. I’ve had my locs 3 years now and I just learned about this last week. I am going to try out no oil because my hair always feels dry and crunchy, either an hour later or the next day. I would repeat the process thinking I needed more just for it to be dry again. I would constantly spray my rose water or aloe whatever I was using then follow with oil cause that’s what I was told to do. my hair would still be dry, and my scalp would itch especially with castor oil! Plus the buildup has cause me to pick at my locs which is so horrible and the lint 😭😅 I live in FL which means it’s always hot and humid so my hair feels like it’s suffering 😂 Even as a loose natural I followed the loc method because I thought I had low porosity, come to find out its product buildup not allowing my hair to be moisturize let alone stay hydrated.

If you're using the right oils the right way I feel like most of the things mentioned will be avoided. I apply oil as my hair needs it not on a schedule so there is no staining or excessive build up. Also, if you apply less volume of oil less often you can still moisturize with water. Macadamia Nut is a great light weight oil that makes my hair so silky 🥰

I have Loc's that are past my bum. I grew up with Rastafarians where there were dreadlocks of ALL STYLES and variations. I have OVER 20 YEARS with Loc's and there is nothing wrong with Oils or Butters. It is about KNOWING what works best for you. And how and when to reapply products. Washing your hair EVERY 10 days and keeping your scalp clean will prevent BUILD UP. DETOX your hair for 30 days was the ORIGINAL "No Oil, No Butter" Challenge by no means is BLACK PEOPLE 4C HAIR suppose to depend ONLY on water for MOISTURE, HYDRATION & SEALANT 🤣😂🤣😂🤷🏿‍♀️🤦🏿‍♀️. Being HEAVY HANDED with PRODUCTS and NOT CLEANING your SCALP and WASHING you hair will lead to ODOR & ACNE because your pores are clogged. I truly advise anyone who is NEW to BLACK PEOPLE 4C HAIR to do the RESEARCH FIRST. Because DRY BRITTLE hair is just as bad.

I've been freeforming 6+ months now, some major locks starting. The only thing I put on my hair is cool water (and occasionally warm water as a treat) and kaolin or bentonite clay. I mix the clay with water to make a thick liquid, put it in a bottle with a fine tip lid and squirt it and massage it into my scalp. Then i rinse and feel like a brand new person each time. In between these washes (because they're powerful) I just use cool water to rinse and if I want I just use the liquid clay in the bottle as body wash too. It's literally like miracle poo. All Love ❤

There are some light oils that let water penetrate thru and if you use something with mucilage with it ULTIMATE hydration. I use a tiny amount of ghee for on my hair not scalp for softness and nutrients. Of course if you have good sebum flow (I dont) then you can always scratch and rub it down your hair or take your ends and rub them on your scalp for loose and bound hair.

Hey, so I am still pretty new to my locs and I know I don't know a lot, so I am open to feedback. I established my locs myself in June 2022. I have consistently used Olive oil with rosemary oil in it on my scalp to prevent flaking and dryness. As for my locs I will spray As I Am Jamaican black castor oil water on it or plain water with a little rosemary essence in it. So far this has worked. If I don't put oil on my scalp I flake up, that's usually what happens, ESPECIALLY in the winter (I live in the northeast). Does anybody else live in a cold climate? Any tips? Btw I use sulfur 8 when it's really bad especially when its below freezing omg it itches!! I know thick oils are a no no I just figured clarifying shampoos will be a part of my regimen.

Aloe Vera gel may be a good solution, I use it in place of oil to seal in moisture for my locs. It’s also anti-inflammatory and helps with any irritation and itching (leading to less flaking). The one I use is bottled, I use the Fruit of the Earth brand. Significantly helped the scalp irritation I was experiencing. I know others use it as a retwisting gel as well.

if you’re using all natural quality oils not taliyah wajiid with added chemicals you’ll eliminate most of these problems. Always read the back of premade oil mixtures. You wouldn’t wash your body and not put on some kind of lotion… our scalp is made of skin/living tissue therefore just like the skin on your body you have to moisturize it. Oils dont make your hair crunchy lack of hydration does once you learn how to hydrate your hair i would suggest reimplementing oils into your routine. You just dont know how to do both yet and that’s ok. Oils dont make your hair stink bacteria does. Accumulation of bacteria from lack of hygiene, bacteria eat the oil and create a smelly smell just like with armpits. The only good point here is the grease stains lol but the solution to that is just use less. Modern trends will not eliminate centuries of knowledge regarding the need for oil in our hair. The loc journey is a journey of learning, unlearning, and learning again. I can almost guarantee you will one day realize your hair needs oil again and thats okay too :)

Not necessarily sis. I have only used organic, single oils and had to stop. I have seborrheic dermatitis. It feeds on oils and makes it worse. My locs have thrived these last 2 years without oils! I spritz with an herbal, oil-free, rinse and massage my scalp. This helps to lubricate my scalp by spreading the natural scalp sebum. I readily admit no oils aren't for everyone, but it is for some!

I don’t think hair needs added oils, it’s moreso a preference based off several variables (sensitivity of scalp, climate, access to water, quality of water, etc). Do what works for you. And if you prefer oils, then yea, it will definitely take some experimenting to discover your best method. I love learning about the traditions and practices of our elders and ancestors, but wisdom comes from understanding context and knowing when to apply different practices. The loc care practices of someone living in Jamaica will likely differ from the loc care practices of someone living in the Bronx.
