Just want to point out for everybody who haven't read Dune that I strongly believe it is obligatory to also read Dune Messiah to actually understand the message here. I though Dune was good when I read it, but after the second book it reached legendary status. I was so intrigued I read along, with The God Emperor being my favourite in the series so far.

Two big influences on Frank Herbert and Dune are even more obvious when you think about the time frame. Dune was published in 1965. The Foundation trilogy was published from 1951 to 1953. Lawrence of Arabia came out in 1962. You get a galactic empire with a secret order guiding the evolution of society from one source, and the aristocratic outsider rallying the desert nations in revolt from the other. There's obviously a Dune influence on Star Wars, but I think Asimov's influence is even stronger -- galactic empire, robots, and a secret society with mind powers.

Dune was one of the first SFF books I read when getting back into reading as an adult a couple of years ago. I enjoyed the plot, but struggled with the way it was written - it felt very dense, especially the philosophical aspects. I started Messiah but couldn't get more than 30 pages in. Over time, I've come to think of it much more positively than i found the reading experience, and I loved Villeneuve's adaption. Maybe I need to read it again.

I read dune over the holidays and it blew my mind. I would definitely recommend it.

I feel like Dune is one of those series (not just the first book, but especially the first) that asks a lot of the reader but pays it back ten-fold. People get bogged down by how much is going on, the ideas, etc, and don't actually appreciate the execution. But if one tries to read it quickly or without paying attention, much of its value is quickly lost. Then those same people claim, " not very good" or "I don't like it because it's about this" when actually they just missed the point.

After watching Dune Part 1, I listened to the audiobook last summer to prepare for Dune Part 2. Loved the book. However, the movie went on to be delayed from the winter of 2023 to March of 2024. Still had a good time listening to the book. Great video as always! Cheers fellas.

The Hobbit adaptation did the inner monologue really well. The shining example in my mind is in the book when Gandalf tells Bilbo something like “true courage is knowing when to take a life and when to spare one” you can actually get the feel of this when Bilbo is wearing the ring and holding the dagger to Golum’s throat in the cave. You can see the intention to kill shift in his face to empathy and then he leaves Golum alive which has a HUGE impact on Frodo and Sam later on. They didn’t even have to use the quote to convey the message

The first Dune book and the second Dune book are the same book split into two, in my opinion. YOUR MIND WILL BE BLOWN BRO.

Personally I found the first 1/3 thick and difficult to get through, but once I got through that initial set-up and world-building it really took off. About to start Children of Dune (3rd book). I’ve heard God Emperor of Dune (4th book) is the best in the series.

i watched the movie before reading the book, loved the movie as it is but it felt like a preview or like trailer for the book. i agree also it is impossible to make a movie of this book but denis villenueve himself is a fan of the book so i think he got what the book was telling and condensed it into a film, tho im still sad about the dinner scene being cut, wish they released a four hour directers cut or smt😂 also hi! as a lady of the audience💅🏻

I'm reading through The Wheel of Time VERY quickly and loving it so far (I love seeing Austins reactions to each book lmao) but looking for something to break up the series later in the year and already settled on Dune. This video is making me want to read it as soon as my copy arrives in the mail this week 😳

Dune is such a great read! I would always recommend it to anybody that is a fan of sci-fi. Interested to see how the second part of the movie is going to get adapted. This part of the book that is about to get adapted is where, at least for me, can get dense and becomes hard to adapt. Regardless, dune (and asimovs ‘foundation’ series) has influenced so much media in general that it makes it a fun read.

The audiobook helped me get through Dune.

i hesitate to read Dune for like year,bcz i hear all time from booktobers how writing style is hard,and that you are lost for first 100 pages or half book..and last year i finaly decided to give a try,and i must be honest,as guy who have rly hard time remembering names and dates i never felt lost,i got it all from start,reading style is one of the best i read,specialy parts when Paul have visions..

Hope you guys cover Messiah at some point. It really feels like that story was the ultimate point of the first book. From what I've seen, a lot of people don't really like it, but I was in tears by the end. And I probably think about the themes in that book the most. I assume everyone's gonna be reading it soon, though, since Denis Villeneuve wants it to be the ending to his trilogy.

To me, even though I agree with the Star Wars, Song Of Ice and Fire and Avatar influences, to me the most obvious Dune influenced series is non other than the Wheel Of Time. Aiel - Fremen, Aes Sedai - Bene Gesserit, Rand - Paul... To me The Shadow Rising is as much an homage to Dune as The Eye of the World was an homage to Fellowship of the Ring. Edit: They do mention it in the video, I wrote the comment before getting to that part 😅

Requested Dune from my library but of course there’s a waitlist I should be reading it in late April/ early may. Also I picked up Hyperion from the library today and it’s massive, Richard’s copy is tiny compared to it 😭😭 I also got The Black Prism and All Systems Red.

Idk if somebody has said this but aside from the literary influences, Herbert was influenced recent history in North Africa and Middle East during his time. He was a journalist and must have certainly took an interest in the topic. He talks about the fremen jihad, for example, and the term "Mahdi" is a real world thing which is a prophesized political and religious leader which will lead the Muslims into a golden age during the end times. Several political leaders, many of whom are part of Middle Eastern, North African, and Muslim independence movements, have claimed to be Mahdi during the recent history at the time of Dune's publication, so it was written with the assumption that people reading that book would get a foreshadowing cause they knew what Mahdi meant: shit's about to go down.

I’m reading dune currently at night with my fiancé, but I would say my intro to SF was Bradbury and Huxley. So. It could still be adjacently broken. 🤣🤣 (it’s great so far, just very early on)

I’ve all 6 of Frank’s Dune books. The last one ends on cliff hanger. His son wrote 2 more to finish out the story but I’m so scared to read them because I’m worried they won’t be good because I love dune so much.

I started the year with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz which was considerably darker, and overall, more entertaining than the movie. Dune is my current challenge. And I say challenge as I bought the Trilogy hardcover and it is indeed a challenge to hold the bloody thing. But so far I have been greatly entertained, and as I am coming from the movie adaptions, it is really interesting to finally read the source material. Specifically, to learn what was adapted well, terribly, or just left our entirely.

I would recommend stopping after the second book. Or the fourth book. I did not get much out of books five and six, they go in a very bizarre direction.

In college, I had a friend who was a literature major, and he always wanted me to read books used in movies. And he was also an experiential pot smoker, trying to talk me into watching the movie after having read the source book - "But it's better when you're HIGHT" argument (I faked smoking his pot while I had my pipe tobacco going - distracting him with Gandalf smoke rings)… So - How about the Shrooms Frank was doing, psilocybin (naturally occurring psychedelic compound produced by several fungi), and that was the secret behind spores mélange, as the main ideas behind it while laying on the floor, tripping. The psilocybin "blue-water" as Dune: water of liife, 'maggots' consuming and moving through the fungi used: as the sand-worms in sand protecting the spice "fields" of 'sand-trout'...etc???

A big influence for Dune is Lawrence of Arabia and how he influenced the Arabs revolution against the Ottomans. The Freemen are the Arabs. Paul is Lawrence, while the spice is oil, and Arrakus is the Arabian peninsula.

I think what the new Dune movies will do the same for the book that LOTR movies trilogy did for the books

I can't read Dune again because after seeing Dune pt1 I was disappointed how short Duncan Idaho's part was. But I just saw pt1 again a year later and was impressed. I guess I was so disappointed that I didn't pay attention to the rest of the movie. So I'd rather watch pt2 without reading Dune again.

I stand by Avatar: The Blue People One, being a great movie. It took a simple plot and put it in a big spiritual alien world of wonder. Unless i'm forgetting something glaringly obvious, there is no better realised alien world in movies than in Avatar. Also i just have a great time watching it. Also unobtainium is actually a term used by scientists to refer to unobtainable elements. It still doesn't sound cool, but it makes sense.

I hated Dune. It took me forever to finish it because of how much I hated it. But I think people should read it so they can appreciate how it influenced writing! 😊 Also, the movie sucks lol... But you can't make a movie about what's happening in someone's thoughts.

I think of the Bene Gesserit as the prototype of both Jedi and Aes Sedai. I don't buy that the movie adaptations shouldn't have a monologue. Dexter did it brilliantly. Also, the newer movie cut out so much plot, it wasn't fun

Something tells me that once he's read Dune, Austin will have a similar response as he had with Hyperion: he was eager to read it at first, but once he finished it he was kind of "meh". I hope I'm wrong. Having said that, I am currently a +100 pages into God Emperor, and I can say that this series is unique. The amount of reflections, quotes and ideas inside are just mesmerizing. The first book is great, but I deeply fell in love with Dune Messiah; and Children of Dune is also a very good closure to the trilogy. It is an experience worth living

I know I'm crazy and "wrong", but I just read Dune last year and found it overrated. It's good, but not great. The character is the definition of the ultimate Mary Stu. Never does anything wrong and is always messiah-level amazing. I respect it for what it is, but it gets a rating of "meh" from me.

But the Movie was so good and it wasn't that hard to understand either...... Found it to be rather normal exposition. The visuals, the DOP, the action, the acting was so good.

Okay, Discussion: 1. I didn't know that about ASOIAF... Can you send me a reference please? 2. "What came before Dune" is a very important question... Now, you see, the question "who did it first" really bothers me because some writers (not all, just some) may draw inspiration from old myths and legends and the old epics (like Tolkien and Beowulf)... We are all literally using the same sources over and over again. The motifs we use have roots deep in our history and nature as human beings... That's why we see so many similarities between different works of art throughout the ages. You can't for example say that all stories that have a hierarchical structure have learned it from Dune. ( Just an example, I know you don't believe that :)) ) And the revolution trope? Come onnnn. If I, a woman who's living under the oppression of IR, write a fantasy story about an uprising, a revolution, are you going to say It's Dune's influence or that author's influence or the other one? :/ And so on... Yes, Dune is a very good book (hopefully), and it's on my 2024 TBR pile... but, as Austin said, it's mostly about who did it better... Ugh, not even that... it's all about the author's unique voice. You know what I mean? + Paul Atreides is literally called "Mahdi", and Mahdi, in Shia Islam, is a promised savior... You see??? Also, ok, take what I'm saying with a grain of salt because I'm a certified Wheel of Time hater™(I've read the books, I did my due diligence) but I feel like saying The Wheel of Time "references" dune might be understating just how much content was taken from that novel to constitute Robert Jordan's story. To put it nicely, I'd say it's more of The Wheel of Time is a fantasy retelling of Dune, it's not just referencing it.

Dune, like all truly great sci-fi writing, is something that once you finish, you feel like an utter imbecile, and have to read again in order to start to truly understand it.
