Plants are essential to a fresh water aquarium's health. I don't just plant my tanks; I plant them heavily. I would estimate that 80% of my tank's substrate has a plant in it or on it. The fish love it; it gives them a sense of security, which shows in bright colors and shiny coats. And it helps to maintain healthy water parameters. Also, aquatic plants are just beautiful to look at.

When I first became interested in fish keeping and discovered aquarium co-op’s channel, I had a 10 gallon bare bottom with 3 corydoras that a couple moving out of state had given me to care for. I watched a few of cory’s video’s on plants and then a few more later on of girl talks fish, and I was sold. I’m now keeping four aquariums, a 5 gallon, 6 gallon, 29 gallon, and 45 gallon, all community aquariums, and they are all HEAVILY planted. I am obsessed with how beautiful and vibrant they are and I love watching how the behavior of fish change for the better when I add more plants. I also love that between my filter and my plants, I have a bit of a buffer (especially with my nano aquariums) if I can’t make it to a water change right away. Thank you, Cory, for encouraging us to try new things and grow as hobbyists! I now love my plants as much as I love my little fish! It’s so much fun.

As a newbie to aquariums, I wanted to offer a tip to others who are new to aquarium plants: Just because one plant won't grow in your tank doesn't mean you've done something wrong or can't keep plants! Try several different species and see what works, because every tank and every water source is different. As an example: Hornwort is commonly recommended as a beginner plant, and I've seen it grow like weeds in lots of tanks (including my LFS)... but both times I've bought some it has promptly died in my 20g long. On the other hand, I have some needle leaf Ludwigia--still a beginner plant but definitely more sensitive--that is absolutely thriving, and it's even turning orange-red in my low-tech setup. I've had limited success with Java + Xmas mosses (they don't die but also don't thrive) but I've got Buces making new leaves all the time. It's very much trial and error :) Side note: thanks to Aquarium Co-op for all the super helpful informational videos! I have now developed multiple tank syndrome and am almost finished setting up my second planted tank, a 55g.

You got me into using plants in my aquarium when I came back to the hobby. So much easier to keep a tank with plants. Fun also to see them thrive. And the tank is so much prettier. I just recently got back into the hobby earlier this year. Since January, I started a small 5 gallon betta tank. Now I have two Fluval Flex 15 gallons and a Fluval Flex 32 gallon. All four tanks have live plants since I figured I'd try it. Now I get just as excited seeing the tremendous growth in my plants as I do with my fish. A huge benefit has been water quality and accidental spawning. I started with 2 red cherry shrimp and now I have maybe 100. I also have a few baby cherry barbs from the original 12 adults in my 32 gallon Flex. I also have at least one baby black molly from the four adults in one of my 15 gallon Flex tanks. I don't try to have my fish spawn but I guess when they do, the mass of live plants give the eggs and the fry enough cover to have a chance.

I believe in that whole, there is a plant for everyone. Over the years I had tried a few and they either grew too slow for me or died. Stopped trying for years. Then I wanted to try again for some reason but didn't want to spend the money. Went out and collected some invasive Hydrilla and boom. It was a jungle in a matter of weeks. I have to trim a few inches off every week and I am in love. Never fertilized or changed my lights or anything, they're growing like weeds!

I bought a common, on clearance sale, cryptocoryne at a big box store several years ago. It took awhile to get established after completely melting down. Flash forward to today and all 14 of my aquariums have that same cheapy crypt in them. Over time I transplanted baby crypts into all the aquariums from that one original plant. Two of my larger aquariums are simply crypt jungles. This basic crypt seems to love my water and light conditions. I tend to stick with what is easy and works. Just one of my many aquarium plant experiences.

It's definitely worth it! Substrate, lighting and dosing is important but make sure whatever is in your tank is compatible including tank size.
