Detailing the main reasons I switched from Windows 10 to Linux (Pop!_OS and Manjaro) and why I was able to stay in the Linux ecosystem after years of jumping back and forth.
Linux today is much better than when I first tried it out as a confused middle schooler in 2008. Now there is plenty of alternative to professional Windows applications and there isn't even a need for me to use Wine anymore.

Windows 10's hideous Metro UI, the lack of Aero/9x UI, and the tendency to break 3rd-party UI mods with updates is why I've wanted to switch for the past 5 years, but Linux's Proton compatibility layer for Steam games still lacking compatibility with DRM and anti-cheat clients is why I'm still very begrudgingly on Win10

Privacy and performance was the main concerns for me. I have tried Linux every now and then, but never really got around to switch completely. I switched finally last week and I am very happy. The thing that made me very angry at Windows 10 and made me take the time to completely switch was that my favorite IDE (programming environment) became very laggy and I had to make and clean Windows 10 install to fix it. I mean it's always something with Windows. You can't just have a good experience in a long time, you have to make a clean install every now and then. I mean I have a hexa core 12 threads Core i7 and yet it felt slow. Linux however, feels really snappy and fast. The next best thing is as a programmer I need to install SDKs and tools. In windows I have to go the individual websites download the installer, install the packages and then set the global and local variables. In Linux it's just one line in the terminal! So much more convenient. I miss Adobe XD and Phothoshop, but I'm not using them at the moment anyway. I feel like I was imprisoned in Windows and Linux freed me. hahaha. I use ArchLinux with Gnome. The only irritating problem is that when I plug in my second monitor the Gnome shell gets laggy and it is very annoyyyyiiing. I'm thinking of giving KDE Plasma a try, but I don't have time at the moment. So to sum up my reasons are: Privacy, customization, the terminal and package managers, performance, programming. PS: And I don't have to worry about antivirus or deal with Windows Security that made my IDEs slow.

Everybody is switching to Linux because of windows updates that break the system, or because of loss of functionality, or because you have to relearn how to navigate a new version of windows. I always just felt Linux was faster than Windows, but never really tested it. One day my Windows system was having troubles and I decided to setup a dual boot, and had to go to my browser and also run a separate email dedicated tool and Linux seriously out performed Windows doing the same thing, on the same hardware. I was amazed at the improvement Linux had, on the same hardware, with the same named tool (ie Firefox and Thunderbird). I didn't get any timings, it was just clearly much much faster.

Great videos! keep up the good work! I switched from Windows because: 1.Windows 7 was the last MS OS I liked. I clung to it until support ran out. I should have switched to Linux before but I was hesitating because of my attachment to Photoshop. 2.Linux is open source. Part of the free web philosophy. That's under siege and I want to be among those who support it. 3.Linux offers a plethora of choices, several desktop environments / window managers, many distros 4.Once you choose a distro, it's highly customisable (there is a learning curve, but that's part of the fun) 5.Linux lets you really control your computer (again, there is a learning curve, but it' really rewarding) 6.Linux people are generally cool, with the exception of the ultra evangelist types ;-) 7.Photoshop alternatives: there is open source software that handles photography, open source software that allows digital painting and open source software that allows image manipulation. One big reason freelance designers do not switch to GIMP is the lack of CMYK support....incorporate that and you slay photoshop.
@ararune3734
@ararune3734 2 жыл бұрын
How is 7. a reason to switch from Windows? Most of this alternative software is frankly trash and it's annoying people pretend it isn't. If you're telling me GIMP is as good as Photoshop you probably don't know how to use either. But not least of all is that GIMP just looks bad. Adobe software is way more intuitive and easy to use, there's loads of features just missing in alternative software. It's not just the Adobe suite, there's other Windows exclusive software which has no good alternative, like Visual Studio. What's there on Linux, Code Blocks? CB is rubbish in comparison

I think it all started to go south when MS stopped trying to sell a good OS but started to use the OS to lure (or force) you in their cloud... :-/ My first step was to switch all commercial software products to open source ones that are platform independent and the next step will be a switch to Linux..

I like Linux and have 3 Linux distros installed on my laptop which also has W10 pre-installed. The main reason of liking it is its speed of doing tasks and also the clean and beautiful looks and customisation options which are available in Linux. W10 gets support for proprietary programs like Autodesk and Bentley which are used extensively in the civil and mechanical engineering design works. However, Linux doesn't get that support or is not even close to it. That is the only lacking point which I feel presently with Linux. Otherwise all good. I am using Linux since 2012 with Ubuntu as starter. Now I use, Mint on one laptop, MX, DEEPIN and POP as the three distros in other laptop. And I have Manjaro KDE full install on a 64GB pendrive.

Also, xrandr method doesn't work, it gives me a "BadMatch" error. I did some digging on the internet and found out that it's probably an EDID issue since when I connect my tv it picks up the native resolution of the tv. I use a DVI to VGA adapter for my monitor and I'm sure it cant pick up the EDID because of it. Does anybody know how to go around this?

Over the years it has felt like MS has been pushing me out of the driver seat. I hated the idea of contacting MS just to put in the product ID. I hated it more when I had to do it AGAIN after some minor hardware changes. This is MY MACHINE, that I'm using on MY TIME. The worst part about it is that I wasn't unsatisfied with Windows in any way. I just became too frustrated with the way MS decided to use it. It didn't help when they started implementing artificial lockouts to software to only run on newer versions. My main machine is all Linux. I also have my school laptop that reminds me how much I hate MS design philosophy...I just got an email notification from my taskbar. I didn't set that up. I didn't ask for that...probably a convenient feature in the right circumstances but I hate having to go in and figure out what Windows is doing in the background all the time. It is literally less work to set up Arch from scratch and just know what's happening from the get-go rather than dig through all settings and services that are pre-set with windows.

@@ProGamerKF ah, so you have made it smaller. So it is no surprise, that a custom window modified to fit your requirements works better for you than an Linux distribution that is not customised to fit your requirements. It's kind of an unfair comparison. Instead you should compare an Windows installation without any modifications with an Linux distribution without any modifications. Or at least your modified Windows with an highly modified Linux setup for example based on arch Linux. I would bet that you can strip down arch more to basic functionality than you can do with Windows.

I had been using Linux off and on since the 90's mainly for amusement, something new experimentation etc. I was never really a gamer so sticking with Windows was primarily for ease of accomplishing certain tasks that it was more difficult or near on possible to do in Linux but Windows was on borrowed time and for years I had a dual boot system with Win XP/Various Linux distro and then Win7/Various Linux Distro. I stuck with XP until it reached EOL and likewise Win 7. I absolutely loathed Vista and particularly the direction Win 8 went. So, when EOL was announced for Win 7 I started spending more and more time in Linux. Before I realized it I hadn't booted into Win 7 for 3 months and when I did all the reasons I hated Windows came home to roost.. Updates, reboots, Anti Virus, Malware, Spyware definition updates, scans, pop ups and nags etc etc. I'd also forgotten how much time is lost on untangling/uninstalling aforementioned nasties from a Windows PC. Having to edit the registry etc etc. You're constantly at war with some mongrel who is trying to take control over your PC, install some piece of garbage you don't want, and spy on you in one way or another, or revert it to their vision of how it should appear or behave. The whole Windows behemoth is based around parasitical infestation/relationship of one sort or another. There is always someone out there trying to take down your PC and Microsoft themselves constantly screw things up to. Good riddance.
