I got one for commuting to work. It's incredibly economical. Driving sensibly I can get an average 68 mpg on the A roads. Lead footing it still returns a frugal 57 mpg. Top speed and fast acceleration count for nothing in city centre traffic so this car is ideal for what I need. And it's £0 road tax.

The aygo has a cable clutch. Biting point can be adjusted to your liking. I adjusted my girlfriends as it was so high now its really nice and sharp and low down.

Had the same situation. Driving school was with a diesel car (VW T-Roc) and the first car I drove myself was my mother's Aygo. The high biting point of the clutch was really difficult to handle, especially in the first weeks of driving the car. Another problem I had was the sensitivity of the gas pedal. When adding a bit of gas while letting go of the clutch the engine was often instantly shooting up to 4000 rpm which isn't healthy for the clutch of course. I now own the new 2022 Aygo X and luckily it doesn't have those problems anymore. Biting point of the clutch is way better and the gas pedal isn't as sensitive. The turning circle has become significantly tighter and the driving comfort as well as noise isolation are much better. Only the weak engine is still there.

Recently I was driving the 1st gen aygo and was unlucky to do it in very windy weather: I could literally feel my car being pushed to the side and had to countersteer as well as slow down. It was scary and made me understand why sometimes a heavy car is an advantage

Its so simple to adjust the clutch , Toyota did mine for free during a service, it's a cable clutch and very easy.

Aw this was my first car and I loved it aha. Didn’t realise it was a card car to drive as it was the only car I knew. When I started to drive other cars I really did notice the difference with the biting point!

Honestly I just leave the side vents on my C1 (it's the same platform) pointing at the windows to prevent the whole fogging up issue; it's the windscreen I find to be a major complaint during the winter. Putting on and leaving the demister on can only really be described as "anaemic" during cold mornings - and I remember one occasion while it was a *really* cold morning, having to go on the M1, where hitting motorway speeds had the window cool faster than the demister could warm it, which resulted in a fun game of: "Oh god, lets wipe this condensation off while travelling at 70mph before I crash." Thankfully, that's only happened once. Another thing is to not leave the car facing the sun during a really hot day; mainly because the centre console warms up like an oven. "So what?" I hear you ask, "Every car's centre console heats up on a sunny day while in the sun." "Ah-ha," I chortle, "But do other cars have their infotainment system overheat as a result?" Not a joke - as soon as it gets too warm, the centre console infotainment system will start pretending that the blue-tooth isn't there. But I *do* like mugging off people at the lights - so that's a bonus.

I drive a 2009 107, wich is basically its French cousin. Very good high revving car, the only downside is the fog that gets next to my wing mirrors. Never had any clutch issue, but indeed can see why some have it

I was learning to drive in a 2019 ford focus for about 6 months until i had to ditch my instructor because of my schedule with work and he was so busy. so this march just been i bought my very first car, and have got learner insurance i bought the 2019 toyota aygo x trend. and WOW it was so difficult to adjust to. most important change is the clutch and the sensitivity of the gas pedal, as compared to the focus i still stall from time to time. they are so different cars but its just practice Another change is room, the car size (overall) and its interior. i’m around 6’5, so i need all the room i can get. this makes the car not a 4 seater, but a 3 seater. no one can get behind me. i also find the passenger side seat blocks the left blindspot. if im learning with my brother, its even more difficult, since he is 6’6 the bigger you are, the less can fit in the car that said, i love it. i have the white and red version and looks great. one of the best first cars you can buy

Well put, Pancake! You know, I still stall from time-to-time too and I've been driving it for at least 5 months. I know many people warn against the automatics, but I am considering it if I upgrade going forward. I know a previous commenter made mention that they upgraded to the Aygo X and the issue of the clutch seems to have been remedied, but if I decided to stay with the Aygo MK2, just newer, I'll definitely look at the automatics.

Great videos! I bought a C1 mk2 in October '19 because it had a canvas roof (not much noisier, never leaks). Same car, basically. I only bought it coz the engine is Toyota (I came from a Corolla). You understand this vehicle very well. I always get about 55 mpg. My tall daughters don't like the back seats - but then they could buy their own...

Thank you! Brilliant, ha! I'm sure they will soon be at an age to do just that if they aren't already. I rate the new C1's. I think they do look really nice and with the run of weather we have had, I'm sure that canvas roof has come in handy. I've just come back from a run down to Brighton and I'm sitting closer to 50 mpg but it may be said that perhaps I'm a tad lead-footed, ha. Love the car overall, although I'm already thinking what the upgrade path the the next car might be and not totally sold on the Aygo X. Perhaps that might change....

I drive a 2010 yaris, with the same engine from the Aygo - this is heavier, slower but a lot bigger inside, 5 seats, and a bit more stable with the wider wheels/tyres. In regards to the high biting point, I have got used to it fairly well - I've never driven a diesel too, so have never encountered the power as mentioned, but honestly, I think they are perfect - if you need to do something quickly, revving it hard, keeps you up with / does better than other cars in traffic, especially at low speeds. Maybe the lack of power feel, is because in a diesel, there is torque everywhere, so can accelerate in any higher gears, but in these 1 litres you have to give it some low gears and screams lol. About the steaming up windows too, we keep our outside vents pointed at the windows at all times - you still get the heat or cool eventually, but is very effective at keeping the windows clear and safe. Nice to see a lot of roads I recognize well in the video too!

Thanks for dropping by, Matty! Some solid observations, here. I think I'll do as you do and keep those vents pointed at the windows! Summer months tend to be fine, it's just the winter months where you find yourself needing to de-mist.

I just got myself a 2015 diesel yaris even though its only 90hp that thing pulls on hills even with the 4th gear and is incredibly economical too, since its diesel there's no issues with the bitting point in the clutch too.Originally I was looking for an Aygo a second gen but when I sat inside I realised that it was too cramped for me since Im a tall guy so I went for the yaris instead

Owned my mid-range 18 reg Aygo two years. Nice looks externally but pretty utilitarian inside. It serves as the daily commuter. But as an older driver, the seat becomes uncomfortable for my back on journeys more than an hour. And particularly disliked in cold weather is lack of unobstructed central air vent to warm left hand on steering wheel. Had a Peugot 107 years before, and whilst a fun drive, the gearbox seemed prone to engaging false neutrals or unexpected gears. Having owned mainly small chesply produced cars over decades, any comparison with premium or larger cars will inevitably disappoint but may serve purpose in awareness of what you may be letting yourself in for. Positives to Aygo ownership can be s fun drive if you know how to get best out of operation, park in small spaces, snd usual financial benefits associated with small car iwnership.

Thanks for adding to this, Paul. I am loving the financial benefits after having owned an older Audi A3 that had sensors go every five minutes! As you say, there are some things on a smaller, cheaper car that will leave you wanting, but the Aygo is an incredibly competent little motor.

I had been driving an old Corsa 1.4 for the past 10 years and finally changed to an Aygo, and my God, do I regret it. I have been driving it for almost a month and yet I am still driving like a learner. I am stalling at the lights, rolling it back and over revving, so bad that I checked my rear mirror and the two guys in car behind me were laughing their heads off, it aint got much power either.. It is a lovely looking little car but it has made me so stressed that I am now thinking of using the bus to get to work. I am pleased to come on and watch this, as now I know it is not all down to me. thank you for this but I think I still got to let this car go

Yeah, you will get people telling you that "you don't know how to drive", but if you're coming from other cars, the simple fact is that the bite point on the Aygo clutch is high and it does take some getting used to. The good news is that you can alter the clutch yourself if you struggle to get used to it. If you search for this video: "Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1, Peugeot 107 108 Clutch cable adjustment - all 1.0i petrol models", you'll have a good idea how to alter it. Alternatively, you can take it to a Toyota dealership or nearest reputable mechanic and they should be able to do it for you. I didn't alter mine and just ended up getting used to it. Hill-assist does really help when you're on a steep incline. Apologies if you are aware, but if you come to a stop on a hill and dip the clutch fully while keeping the brake on, you'll have a good few seconds to find the clutch bite point, which is generally long enough to avoid a stall. It is like all cars though in that once you get used to it, it does become less of an issue, but I totally get your frustrations as I have been there and experienced them first hand. I'd advise you to stick with it and see how you get on another month down the line as the rest of the car is solid. I've had mine over a year and absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it. Services with Toyota bag you extra warranty on the car if it is less than 10 years old and it will easily do 50mpg's, so it's got a lot going for it. I went from spending 60 pound a week to 30 when I switched to this. If you do still find that you don't like it, the VW UP/Seat Mii/Skoda Citi Go come well-rated and are solid alternatives that will have much more familiar clutch controls. Lot of good things are said about the Kia Picanto, too!

I did not stall the car today, but I do put my foot down too hard on the gas and the racket it makes. LOL It is hard going, as i am having to really concentrate and dread coming up to the red lights, but not too bad today. I will take your advice and give it another month. I never thought it would be so difficult for me. i been driving for over 25 years. I might consider having the clutch lowered though.....thanks very much, you made me feel a little better. I keep you posted and let you know how I feel by the end of next month.

i have mk2 aygo as well the clutch is just undrivable not sure if my is really broken or its just the car I'm really curious if the 1st gen has the same problem because if not then il have a look at them

It does have a really high biting point and it can feel really vague. In honestly, it is still one of my biggest bug bears about the Aygo MK2. I know people who drive the MK1 and they say it's essentially the same, so you wouldn't be necessarily better off. I know someone commented saying that they got a manual Aygo X and that seems to be much better. I have found in my MK2 Aygo that if i have the seat as low down as possible and wear shoes that have a relatively thin sole, it really does help with clutch control massively. it may also be the case that you need a new clutch as they do wear out really quickly.

If you do a lot of motorway driving then you may be better with the 1.3 VVTI engine which comes in the Yaris and IQ. They have a 6 speed box and 97bhp which is not blistering but its perfectly adequate and indeed the 1.3 IQ is a hoot to drive. They pull from quite low revs too so you can be lazy with gear changes and you dont need to row it along with the gearstick. The Yaris is a lot quieter than the IQ and presumably the IQ so must have more soundproofing from new.

Yes, I'm thinking the Yaris might be a better upgrade than the Aygo X going forward. When I read that the IQ (that little dinky car) comes with a 1.3, I had to do a doubletake 😂 I bet it's an absolute hoot to drive. Colour me intrigued on that, ha!

Well all of these are common 'issues' with small, petorl cars...Only real issue I had with my (very similar) 1st gen Yaris was the lack of acceleration you mention, even though it had a decent 74hp diesel. Seems like Toyotas are generally programmed for slow acceleration because less powerful cars I've driven feel zippier and don't make you sweat for an overtake.

My Auris is pretty depressing for a 1.3. It's just so flat. But it's been very reliable and in 14 years it's only cost me a lamda sensor besides the usual brakes and tyres.

All small cars have awkward clutch action. Its because they just dont have enough power. Clutches on small engined cars need replacing far sooner than larger engined cars. Clutches on diesel cars last almost forever because they require very little revs to pull away.

Picked up a Peugeot 107 2007 (first gen of these cars) in July after using my instructors Audi A3 1.6. i stalled up 3 times just driving it home despite learning for over 9 months at that point and being able to seamlessly use my instructors. After 2 weeks of driving with my parents while the instructor was on holiday, i was so used to the clutch being high that I physically couldn't safely drive the Audi anymore. After switching to my 107, i passed my test mid September with it. Since then, driving it daily to work and back, I've had to use the front demister every morning I wake up (granted its a 5am start) and it doesn't tend to start demisting until you set off and warm the engine up a little. I could sit with the engine on for 15 minutes on full power heat and it wouldn't demist. As for the lack of power, it has good acceleration in lower gears but 4-5 are useless with any sort of gradiant. Many times i've dropped back to get a flying run up at an overtake on a B-Road e.g. Car in front doing 40 in a 60, and either not been able to pass with enough speed before the next corner or been unable to keep up in the higher gear needed to not bash the limiter. Overall its a great first car thats cheap to run and insurance as long as you're in a urban area but i would recommend something with a little more power if its rural.

Nice reflection and your experience very much mirrors my own. Based on your own experience, It would be interesting to see how I would feel going back to one of the German cars, given the clutch isn't as high. With the heater, I've found, like you, that it does work quicker once you're in motion. It's tons better than my previous 55 plate Audi, which was a diesel. I used to sit there forever to try and get the thing warm and even in motion, by the time I'd dropped my wife off the car had only just started to get warm, so the Aygo is a welcome upgrade in that department. Yes, since owning the car, I have found that the lower gears are your friend. The car is a lot of fun in second and third for sure! I do a mix of urban, rural and motorway driving daily and it does a god job with all of it, but if your tackling a lot of hills, I can imagine it getting frustrating quickly. I think it's context, isn't it. I had an Audi A3 prior to this, which had a 2.0 litre engine so you do end up missing it in comparison to what The Aygo offers. You were spoilt! Fiat 850 looks sick!

It's got a cable clutch, which can be adjusted. From comments I've read on my videos, it seems to be a popular adjustment as the clutch rides quite high by default. It's not something I've done yet, but might get around to at some point. Thanks for dropping by.

Yes, it looks like the 2017/2018 ones are taxed in a higher tax bracket at £180 a year in the UK. The 2014/2015 model I have is free.

I’m used to VW clutches that can be a bit unforgiving. Drove the Aygo and it was absolute hell in comparison. The clutch alone would steer me clear of this car. Super sensitive with very sudden and high grabbing point. There is no reason why they had to make it that bad. I guess the Toyota badge sells however bad the car is.

I was in exactly the same boat as you. I came from an Audi and the clutch was much better. You do get used to the Aygo eventually, but it is very jarring when you are used to driving something from the VW Group.

You roll the car to and fro while waiting in traffic? You'll be needing a new clutch soon! Just put the handbrake on. I've just got a Citroen C1 Mk2 which is essentially the same car and the clutch is high, but I got used to it in about a week and now I don't even think about it.
