Many players love casual matches to warmup, mess around and practice new mechanics, but I STOPPED playing casual for years and this video explains why.

Almost everyone who plays Rocket League hops into casual matches daily, but I avoided them almost completely for years. There was a point in time when I was around platinum rank and I had a choice to make - do I want to try and be a freestyler, focused on scoring fancy goals and clipping on people or do I want to get the top rank Grand Champion? Obviously many people achieve both, but I found that playing casual actually hindered my progression and by only playing ranked matches I allowed myself to become more used to the pressure, verse players of a similar skill consistently, dedicate time to learning new mechanics in freeplay, custom training and workshop maps instead of casual, bypass the issue of having players leave regularly and improve my warmup routine. Make sure to consider what you want to achieve by playing Rocket League, and make your own decision on whether or not you want to continue playing casual Rocket League games.

Casual is a way less fun experience than Ranked from my personal experience and I see a lot of the reason why. It's just everywhere. People are quicker to play risky and reckless but equally just as quick to be toxic and teammate blame as Ranked. Also I wish I could get the ones who just leave. I tend to get the guys who won't ff but afk and/or start assisting the opponents.

I usually play casual matches as a warm up, but today was so bad day I didn't even go to ranked. Out of dozens, I won just one match. And I blame the terrible matchmaking for it. More than a half of the matches, I was put in as a backfill. That really feels like the game punishes me for no reason, because instead of playing an equal match, I am expected to turn the tables in a very short time. Reward ? 100 XP ... Pathetic, I could get more by playing since the beginning, and a better feeling and experience on top of it. Also, those matches I am put into are already decided one-sided pubstomps, with one team winning by a least 3 or 4 points. For the other half of the matches, I am put into a solo queue team, against a full-party team, many times from the same club. I know that parties don't necessarily guarantee a victory, but they certainly have some more synergy (that's why they're in the party afterall), and may be even communicating via Discord or Teamspeak. Playing purely solo queue matches is incredibly rare. Backfill sounds theoretically like a good idea. In ranked games, it really infuriates me when a teammate leaves the match, and the game punishes me for that by lowering my rank (why do I play this game ?). But backfill could only work if players were given the choice to decide whether to play as a backfill (and be rewarded for it), and if the system correctly assessed whether the match is lost or can be yet saved. I also just read on Reddit that this matchmaking problem is 3 years old, if not even older (again, why do I play this game ?). NOTE: bots are super terrible.

You were right about the casual. I remember when I was C1 in S9 and still didnt played training much. But it hit me that if I wanna improve or get to GC one day I had to leave. And ever since I left it, I dont miss it. Ranked is now my main mode to go. I got my 1st GC in S11 but that was rumble. S12 was the peak season. Secured it in 3s, Snowday and Rumble and same for S13. S14 I achived Dropshot GC as addional one which by far hardest one. And now here we are, Season 1. Im GC in 3s but the greatest achivement is SSL in Rumble and Snowday (top 30 atm). I have no chance getting SSL in 3s this season but I will keep improving nonetheless to hit it one day. Other than that, great vid.

I liked seeing this. I’m Gold 3/Plat1 and I solo Q casual 3’s most the time. I’m constantly against Champs, GCs and the occasional SSL. usually in teams. It’s ridiculous but i try. Then I try a ranked match against Golds and it’s like little kids playing soccer. 🤦‍♂️😄.

I love playing casuals with my brother and trying to go for “cool clips” even though I am plat 1 and can’t do any cool mechanics. But the question you asked made me realize I want the high ranking titles. Getting the base mechanics down and getting in higher ranks means that I will be able to hit cool shots if I switch back to a casual mindset. I am plat 2 in doubles and only have 3 days (time played) and I feel that is impressive but I want to reach champ and grandchamp one day. Is it true that the more time you put in makes you better? Because I get mad at myself for missing shots and say that if I had more time in the game I wouldn’t have missed that but is it true?
@slyk
@slyk 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The only way to improve in this game is to dedicate the time. Practicing in freeplay and custom training and also playing matches. Above all though, the game is meant to be fun - so do whatever brings you the most joy. Good luck!

Would love to see some replay analysis. Perhaps 1 replay analysis per rank starting at gold or plat. I imagine bronze and silver wouldn't be very beneficial to analyze. Those ranks are really just about learning to control your car and getting some needed experience. GC point of view is very beneficial. :)

Mostly I agree with your statement, but the part about casual being a bad training method is simply false in my opinion. Yes, you could just do training packs but tell me this, if u have 8nf boost and no opponent defending, ur not rlly training all that much. It won’t matter if u can hit the greatest of mechanics without players to defend because you won’t get the sense of how to weave and confuse the opponents. Doing casual as a way to train makes you get more game sense and actually lets you apply the skills in actual 1v1s. Take me for example, I’m gold 3 and I mostly used to main training packs, I can hit shots like air dribble double taps, musty and more in free play that but whenever I go into a match, I can’t do them. TLDR is that training in casual gives you an understanding of the environment when you try to practice skills. Good video though ❤
