5 Sailing Mistakes We Made As Beginners. You know how you don't know what you don't know when your just learning something for the first time? Well, we only started sailing 10 months ago when we moved aboard SV Cadence, a Catalina 387. Before then, we didn't know how to sail.
And we had no clue.
But that's okay.
We learned from our mistakes, and we're still learning from our sailing mistakes.

Glad to see a KZfaq channel for a Texas sailor. Hopefully we will be doing exactly what you are doing soon, that is, getting out and pushing ourselves up and down the Texas coast with the objective of making some more serious passages before long. We are currently docked at Baytown and hope to begin serious sailing in the next month or two after we get a few items fixed on our boat. Over sheeting is a rite of passage for newbies! Rolling into summer, add Boat Leather to your wheel - with foam underlay & white perforated vinyl film to your hatches. 2 relatively cheap & easy upgrades that have a huge impact!

Just bought my first sailboat 2 weeks ago and took the wife out the weekend we bought it and did the same exact thing with the genoa. lol, too scared to raise the main so sailed with partial genoa and barely enough speed to have any helm. Good video for us newbs, I am in portofino so will likely see you guys around, safe sailing!

Oh man, that was our exact experience!!! It's so fun learning by doing - the wind can get scary, but you'll grow into bigger wind speeds - the upper teens, then the 20s soon enough! Enjoy the process. And congrats on your first sailboat!!!

... Nice good 5 sailing mistakes. As lil sailboater I wld add GO GRAZY W ANCHORS buy at used stores as fun treasure hunt 2 or 3 50lb anchors sep w 20ft rope so only muscling up 1 at time if just 15ft deep and use rarely if scary storm nears and no marina nearby ..... Sooo, w lots anchors will have option if caught in chasing windstorm in bay or river... Yes few do this, but few really travel far or anchor for weeks like a fun floating cabin.... Sooo, on 20k lb boat having 1% be anchors is unusual but doable.... Yes I am over cautious...I use a yellow tow rope when using my mega anchor , , , I used more often on rivers w current, less room so wanted firm hold...

I like using the traveler most of the time. It keeps the boat more level. Main sheets cause heeling.

Yeah, we've noticed that too and can understand how the boom vang helps keep the sail from filling to much.

Wow you're early! What a nice surprise to see that you posted a video! I've been reading through my husband ,John's, Fast Track to Cruising book that he had from when he took a live aboard course years ago. And I am to the part where they're talking about how to balance the boat. :D So I could understand what you were talking about. I can relate to the uneasiness of going fast and heeling, it took me sometime to get used to that. Now I love to go fast. After we bought our boat we were taking it 50 miles to our mooring and when we let the sails out for the first time they got stuck and we found out that we had a lot of pent up stress in us as well LOL! This was a really great video!

Great video guys! My wife and I are 6 months new to Watergate Marina, with the purchase of a Beneteau 473. My wife and I are learning the early ropes like what you are showing in the video. One other issue that you haven't mentioned with over reliance on the genoa. Using the mainsail as the 'primary' will let your boat have a weather helm. Important if the helmsman goes o/b or is otherwise disabled and the autopilot isn't running. The boat will head upwind and slow/stop with a weather helm. Running the genoa only will result in a lee helm; same circumstance (helmsman lost/disabled), the boat will turn downwind and depart the MOB location rapidly and will setup for gybes. In short, weather helm is good, lee helm is bad for most situations.

We've been contemplating a video on the topic, but here's the skinny -- This boat and others like it (newer than 2000, less than 40 foot) are 60k-130k. For us, that meant going all in and selling all of our land connections. Another route we contemplated was to keep land connections (house, stuff, car) and grab a smaller or older boat project.
