This is a great video!!! Thanks for making this.😀 I'm new to keeping a saltwater aquarium and keeping a saltwater aquarium is not as difficult as I thought. I converted my 125 gallon freshwater planted tank into a saltwater and it's been up for over a month now. Oh, I also lost a few fish along the way but I realized that in this hobby we will make mistakes and loose fish for many reasons.

@ReefDork

The only real restriction is the size of your freshwater reservoir. If it's big enough to last a fortnight, the tank will be fine - you can get auto feeders and a couple of weeks without maintenance won't hurt. Although I personally don't like going away for more than a week!

Already have done about a year's worth of research. My eyes glaze over when we get too deep into the chemistry and dosing. Cost seems to be the big hurdle, but I want to do it the right way. A side effect of doing that research. Lol. I look at my buddy's "cheep" ultra low maintenance tank and I shake my head. Like a yard with nothing but weeds and a couple wildflowers in it! Lol 😂
@chosenjacob4604
@chosenjacob4604 3 жыл бұрын
Just buy yourself a cheapo tank and get on with it. Research can only take you so far. Get your hands wet and you're learn a lot about what you like and you don't like. Do not even try to make your first tank, a perfect tank, it will not work out like that. Just do something reasonable, then expect to do an upgrade. All of us have had MANY tanks over the years, and every day is a school day, each time we refine the setup of what we like to do. RedSea cube tank, do it, go, go right now, then expect in another year or so that you'll upgrade and you won't have waste much money, but you'll have learnt a lot.
@keithstie
@keithstie 3 жыл бұрын
@@chosenjacob4604 yea I hear ya! Money, time, and desire were my original obstacles. I already have 3 nice freshwater tanks. So I started doing the research to see if I even wanted to go there. But with knowledge comes standards. But I hear you! That's really a good idea. It is a big leap to convert over to saltwater operations. I can't have too many tanks. 😂.

Hi Alex, yet another superb video 👍 30 yrs ago I kept marine fish with under gravel filters, never had any problems, when I retired a few years ago, I decided to start the hobby again, not realising how much things had changed, bought a tank and cabinet, then found out about sumps 😩 too late, no room for one, had to go for a canister filter, I use NSW, but struggle with nitrate problems, yet fish seem happy enough and soft corals are ok, I have cut back on feeding which the fish aren’t that happy about. It’s just this nitrate constant problems, Any suggestions you could give me would be greatly appreciated 👍
@ReefDork
@ReefDork 3 жыл бұрын
You could get a hang on back refugium and grow chaeto - that's a great way to export nitrate. Otherwise, i'd say the best bet is to do regular 20% water changes with pristine RO/DI water. If you could get a hang on filter with VERY low flow, you could put some Siporax in it - that's fantastic stuff for nutrients.

Great video Alex. Are you going to do a 6 month review of the Red Sea plus product? I am interested in how much pollution it causes in a tank.
@ReefDork
@ReefDork 3 жыл бұрын
I've wanted to do this for ages! But I haven't had a settled period in my tank where nothing has changed. I've changed my lights, decreased my phosphate, increased my feeding, changed my salt mix etc etc. So if I did a long term vid, there are too many variables to say what effect the Reef energy is having. I'll definitely get to it at some point but I just can't say when. For what it's worth, I've stopped dosing it occasionally when my p04 has been high - I can't say if the Reef energy was contributing to that but I suspect it might have been.

Great video, I’ve kept marines for about ten years now and I’ve never had a sump. So many things worry me about a sump. Noise, Pipe connections that might leak, Two tanks, main tank might leak, sump tank might leak. Weight, two tanks more weight. I’m about two upgrade to a new tank in January I might try a sump system but it will be upstairs so again weight could be an issue. Mmmm. Do I , or don’t I.
@chosenjacob4604
@chosenjacob4604 3 жыл бұрын
I think you're overthinking it. Noise can be controlled, but you need a gate valve to have fine control of the downpipe flow, NOT a ball valve. All tanks could leak, but the odds are super extremely low, even having two tanks and doubling your chance is still ridiculously low odds. If tanks leaked a lot, then people wouldn't be in the hobby. Pipe connections could leak, but this either means you didn't solvent clean them before gluing, you didn't use enough glue, or your cutting was just bad. I've never had a pipe leak and I've plumbed three tanks. Just take your time and do it properly. Yes two tanks weigh more than one tank, but the sump is usually ~20% of the display volume. If you're worried that an extra 20% of too much for the floor, then you shouldn't be having the tank AT ALL. What would happen the first time a friend comes round to see the tank and you're both stood looking at it? People weigh more than a sump with water. Just think about it logically, if it doesn't smell right, then it's not right.

I think this video is a bit misleading, the hard truth is that the hobby is a minefield. If you follow this advice you will just end up with a tank full of pests and parasites. He makes no mention of the need to quarantine fish before adding them to the display. I know he doesn't do this and advised against it but once you have had a dose of velvet in your tank you'll never put an un-quarantined fish near your tank again. It's same with other pests like flatworms and aiptasia, not even a mention! Also, most of the soft corals mentioned are nothing but invasive pests once you become more advanced in the hobby. The slightest touch from a mushroom is enough to kill SPS and once you get them in your tank you'll never be able to remove them as they are indestructible. Other sofites like kenya trees release chemicals into the water that retard the growth of your LPS and SPS. You have to plan carefully and do your research before starting a marine tank otherwise you'll be stripping it down and starting from scratch within a year to undo all the mistakes you make. They are only a fraction of the possible issue you may face.
@andycx2
@andycx2 3 жыл бұрын
Just to follow up and friend of mine is now leaving the hobby after less than one year because his tank has become over-run with vermetid snails which are causing his corals to recede and die. Only way to get rid would be to strip his tank down and completely change all the rock or kill all life on it. Pretty much start again! Like I say its a minefield.
