A sad thing I've read about Beethoven is he had a rough childhood. His father, Johann van Beethoven, was a total alcoholic bastard to his son. According to witnesses , young Ludwig would be dragged from his bed at night and forced to play, and if he didn't his father would beat him. Whenever he played poorly, Johann would verbally abuse him, calling him an embarrassment. He even went as far as occasionally locking Ludwig in a cellar. This childhood trauma could have been what developed what we call now OCD and possibly bipolar disorder. It's so sad how sometimes the most talented artists can have the most tragic backstories.

I think the reason why Beethoven had such breakups with girls is that he couldn't hear anything from them which leads to miscommunication. It's just my opinion and I think it sounds logical.

Erm, not really. Most of his lovers were of high social status and weren't allowed to marry him. A notable example is the Countess von Deym.

The people saying Beethoven was black have good intentions, but are so tiresomely stupid. It is absolutely insane to assume that for *every* time he went outside he powdered his face, especially during his periods of depression, and that *every* portrait is faked. These people need to appreciate actual black musicians, and not insist a white man is black when he isn't.

Neue Wiener Klassik While you're on it, can you please not use the same old "Mozart portrait with curled up white wig and red coat"? it's really cliched. It's not even an authentic portrait of his. I kind of hate it cause it's really overused even though it's not authentic. Can you use other Mozart portraits like the one by Doris Stock

His deafness was real (particularly affecting the higher audible registers) and was truly a torment to him both in its onset and inexorable progression. Even so, he would learn to exaggerate the perception of his deafness to avoid certain tiresome social interactions. His humor was droll. And he did love macaroni and cheese, but the homemade, baked kind, not the boxed Kraft variety.

"Even so, he would learn to exaggerate the perception of his deafness to avoid certain tiresome social interactions." This is the kind of half-knowledge that is dangerous. Beethoven was deeply ashamed of his deafness and hid it from all but his closest friends. He was actually quite gregarious by nature, as he writes resulutions in his diaries such as: "To spend (...) noons and evenings with company". The notion that he would have exaggerated his deafness is outrageous. As for the macaroni... not to nitpick, but it's actually mentioned in the video that macaroni and cheese looked quite different back then. For instance, there was no sauce, it was just pasta and grated cheese. And if you must know, even the shape of macaroni was different then, being much closer to linguine than macaroni.

I agree with everything you say (and was being somewhat facetiious about the Macaroni & Cheese, a baked version of the classic Roman dish being a particular feather in my chef’s hat). To be fair to Beethoven, you are quite correct that he went to great lengths to conceal his deafness in the years of its onset (in his 20s) and rapid worsening; but it was hardly a secret in his later years, and I have perhaps taken liberties by amplifying a couple of social circumstances in which he “played” it to his advantage. There is a provocative book called ‘Beethoven’s Hair’ (in English) I read a few years ago which suggests, based on an analysis of a lock of hair believed to have been clipped at his deathbed, and judged more likely than not to be genuine, that Beethoven’s lifelong ownership of a ‘bad’ set of dinnerware, and the leaching of lead into his food intake, may have been the primary causal factor of his hearing loss. We can’t of course know with any certaintly, but it is a fascinating thesis.

I read it was plumbed wine, cheap wine that was made to taste better with lead. Macaroni and cheese and poached pollock. In at least one instance, hair was that of a goat; Beethoven's trick on a groupie.

@@davidmehnert6206 As I've written above: Beethoven became deaf because 1796 he had typhus. This is written in the excellent Beethoven biography written by Jan Cayers. I hope it will be translate in English soon. Lead didn't help his health but was not the first reason of his deafness.
