There's always something buried in there. I just discovered another feature for infinity focus! Maybe? Going to do some testing then share in a video.

If I remember correctly, on the original EM1 the exposure point was fixed at the center and could not be linked to move with the focus point. I remember using the method you described for the EM10 with the AEL button. Thanks for explaining that green histogram and the spot hi and shadow points on your live chat this week.

Thanks, Bob. I don't have an EM1 Mark I, so can't say for sure but you are probably right.

Really helpful! I never knew what the green portion of the histogram was, and I never knew that you could lock spot metering with the AEL button and then refocus elsewhere. Thanks!!

I often use spot metering for exposure. To get a much faster workflow I tend to shoot in M. You can move the focus point to where you need it for the shot, then just temporarily re-aim the camera so that the focus point is covering where you want to set the exposure and adjust the shutter and aperture accordingly, then you are free to shoot and potentially change the focus point, you just ignore the exposure guide, since it is now irrelevant. This saves moving the focus point to where you want to measure, and instead of using AEL, you now have the baseline, so you can manually adjust the exposure from that base point if you think it is needed without losing it. With AEL, once you release you have to recalibrate the exposure.

I use the same technique when using flash. I expose for the ambient light - typically the highlights, then use the flash to fill in the rest. Thanks for sharing your experience. -Rob

Thanks Rob for the refresher and the new stuff. Totally forgot about the possibility to combine exposure metering with the focus. (I remember this feature was added as an update to my EM5MII)

Excellent synopsis, Rob, especially with the links to your videos with more complete explanations. I've noticed an exception to the Priority Release function (6:08), and that's when you use back-button focus. Different than when focus is accomplished with a half-press of the shutter button, with back-button focus, the shutter button WILL take an out-of-focus image if focus hasn't been obtained, even if Priority Release is turned off in the menu.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Thomas. I just tried it on my EM5-II and the Priority Release "OFF" is working for me with the AEL/AFL set to Mode 3. Which model camera do you have?

@@RobTrek EM10 mk2 (I should have mentioned that in my comment!), back button focus set on Fn1, Priority Release set to "OFF" for S-AF, and AEL/AFL set to Mode 3.

Very nice video. I want to mention something in regard to Fn 2 button. I love that feature with my E-M10 Mark II. That button is called the multi function button. However that feature is not available in the E-M10 Mark III. I found that annoying that they took away some features from the E-M10 series. Also with E-M5 Mark III there is no Fn 2 button so you have to go into the B menu then select Button function to assign a button as the Multi function button. I love the Multi function button so much that if the E-M10 Mark III was for me, I would have returned it. It is my wife's and I asked her if that was a concern but she didn't care as much as I did.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 3 жыл бұрын
It is very annoying that Olympus stripped features off the EM10 series after the Mark II. On the EM5iii and EM1iii you are correct. The Multi Function feature is not set as default button function.

Hi Rob. Thanks for those tips. I always learn something from yr channel. OMD cameras have so much in the menu till I cant finish learning it. 1. Recently I came across dpi setting in Custom Menu H1. The DPI value can be 0001 to 9999. Any idea why Olympus gave this settings? And should I use it in my shoot. 2. In Custom Menu - G - Pixel Count . What the use of that ? Thank Rob.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. You can ignore the DPI values. It's used sometimes by printers but has no impact on your images. The Pixel Count is to check for dead pixels. If the camera finds any, it will average the pixels around the dead pixel and fill in the blanks. Once a year is probably fine to perform this function.

Thank,s for tip,s Rob, found it a damn nuisance focus point keep,s shifting, tried Ael, does not cure it? Most annoying in landscape, thought you had focus 1/3rd way in, only to see in post, it,s way off.

Hi Rob, I‘very been watching your videos as I just purchased an Olympus OM D E Mark III and they are very helpful. At some point when setting up my camera I did something to have the AF-S and AF-C priority grayed out. Do you have any idea what other setting is affecting these 2 priorities to be ON and grayed out. I would like to turn them both off. Thank you Best Cindy
@RobTrek

Hi. Only thing I can think of is you have the camera in MF. Check the AF mode in the super control panel. Make sure it's in AF-S or AF-C.

I am unable to locate the 'spot metering' setting on my EM-10 Mk ii, to tie it to the focus point. Is it available on this model (I don't think it is)? Many thanks!

I have had an olympus OMD for quite a while....I have a 'cluster' focus points and I use to have just one focus point. How do I change this....hitting the buttons just moved the cluster but I know there is a way to change it...I have 9 now or all, but not just one......what am I doing wrong...
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. When you have the cluster points showing in the live view, click the info button then rotate the rear dial. That should cycle through the different focus options.
