ABOUT JenniferTardy.com:
I’m the founder and CEO of Jennifer Tardy, LLC where we are on a mission to forge successful careers at the intersection of employers and historically underrepresented populations (UPs).
What is an underrepresented population?
An underrepresented group describes a subset of a population that holds a smaller percentage within a significant subgroup than the subset holds in the general population.
Here is a great example. If Amazon employs a smaller percentage of African Americans at its company than is representative in the general population, then African Americans are considered an underrepresented population.
About Jennifer Tardy
I am a career coach, strategist, and consultant. Our organization provides coaching and training to job seekers who are members of underrepresented populations (UPs). In addition, we provide consulting to employers seeking to attract, recruit and retain UPs.

Have you ever interviewed with someone who was rude, late, extremely disorganized, or dismissive? Tell us about your interview experience?

Career Success Experience this on Friday..#2, #3,#4 both the owner and hiring manager were 15 minutes late to the interview but somewhat apologetic about it. First questions off the bat.. was my martial status. Owners asked me 3x on what my status was. Finally I says it something you need to know. He was ok. A few questions later asked if I had any kids and how many? Now I was starting feel uncomfortable. Now the owner did explained why he asked those questions b/c he wants to a family friendly work environment and he likes to get personal with all his employees. It makes sense but still very odd. Also they didn't describe much of the position.. schedule and potential salary. They didn't even ask me what salary I looking for. They did offer the position to me and I was still on the fence and asked to think it over the weekend. After weight out the pros/cons .. and think about my own experiences of a bad vibes of a work environment. I declined the job offer on Monday. After watching your video.. I know I made the right decison.. One advice.. go with you gut.. if it does feel right or sounds too good to be true along with what video mention. Walk away. Don't take a job and later regard leaving the old one. Because you discover the true. Grass is not always greener on the other side.

Carmona, it sounds like there were too many "red flags" during that interview process. I'm glad you decided to follow your instinct and that this video was a confirmation. You used the interview process for what it was supposed to be--to help you to also get to know the company. I commend you for that. Are you still in job search?

Career Success .. Yes, I am still job search for both part time ( in case I need to stay at my current job longer than plan) and full time job. I had an interview today. Well actually two interviews this week.. 1 part time and full time. Part time job is retail for holidays. However the full time job is my 1st interview since the ugly uncomfortable interview I had a few weeks ago. Omg! Big difference in structure and professionalism. Interviewer was on time. Our conversations just flow easily. No red flags of any kind. I really felt I actually got this job. But I do have one question.. regarding hair styles. I am natural. Been natural for over a year now. Last interview I did wear a wig to make myself comfortable. However for my recent interview I wore my natural hair. It was clean and neat. But I did felt slight uncomfortable because I wasn't sure on the company stands on hair. In my mental logic .. I felt social and culture has change to allow natural hair styles on African Americans. I was trying to portray true myself because I know there will be days I will switch between a wig, scarf, and my natural hair. Any piece of advice? Have you done a video on this topic? If so, share me the link. Thanks

Yes the most recent one was extremely horrid. I was asked by HR to bring in all of my certifications to the interview for the site supervisor to review. When the site supervisor took a look at my certs her eyes nearly fell out of her head along with her co-interviewer who did not even work for the company I was interviewing for. The site supervisor had a disgusted facial gesture while looking through my certs. I knew I was not going to get the job at that moment. I always look people in the eye because I want to see those facial reactions and give full attention too. The questions she started to ask were not imperative to the job. I ended up redirecting the conversation several times or repeating answer I had already given them. Very weird interview. When I go to an interview I will take the opportunity to ask questions about the the company, what do you like about working here, can you tell me more about the day to day duties, etc. I thought the two ladies were shocked that not only did I have the nerve to ask questions, I had to sit through fake politeness from them. I did not get the job, and I did not want the job working for those two or that particular company. The one prior to that was an extremely unorganized company with the "lets get as many people in for the first interview and hire them all on the spot!" I declined the job because of the unprofessional way they ran it. New hires and potential employees are not animals to be rounded up and sent to the slaughter. They were desperate to fill the slots with warm bodies, and I was happy walking away from that hot mess!

@@rkr5rkr599 I had two women sitting at the reception look me up and down and say "Is SHE here for the job?" Mind you I have a Masters Degree in Education and years of experience with children of various ages. They were acting like I was an alien, rather than a well dressed lady ready to work. That was another job constantly filled, vacated, and advertised again.

I'd like to add a red flag that I've noticed with my own manager while conducting interviews... They do not read your resume at all ( You'll be able to tell from the questions that they as you). From my experience, this kind of manager wants to hire based on personality and will not care about the hard work that you do. They'll mostly care that you're their buddy or not, but will throw you under the bus as soon as something goes wrong. I've seen this pattern many times.

I was offered a job under an hour and received the offer the same day. One week after accepting the offer, the hiring manager decided not to hire me because of a lame excuse "Actually, we do not have this role available and we are not ready to hire." It was one of the most unprofessional experience ever! Period! They even called my current employer to terminate my work permit so it can be transferred. I ended up losing both jobs.

Yes! This is a great video! I’d also add if the interviewer tells you they will let you know by the next day and you don’t hear from them for two weeks saying you got the job, that is a red flag! Don’t fall for it. They offered the job to someone else and they already walked out. Also, a huge red flag that I’ve learned is if they introduce you to other employees in the company during the interview and you can pick up on tension between two or more of them (one trying to dominate everyone) run away! Do not take that job!

Thank you! I'm happy you found this information useful. I'd love to have you subscribe to our channel. I would say the time it takes to hear back can be due to several factors, many of which I highlighted in this video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJ5yktpimpOoh40.html & this one - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nOCUZbKEtdbYnp8.html I will agree that it is important to pay attention to the atmosphere and how you feel during an interview (and/or tour) because the interview is just as much for you as it is for an employer.

I look at that too, especially from company photos on the web... funny though, my interview on the phone, i asked about the culture there, the mgr did say the office was pretty "diverse", which made me feel better. I'm thinking (hoping) the photos were from a long time ago and they changed the way they did things. I know mgmt changed.

Great video. Informative. Sadly, I took a position with an office after the employer called and asked me, repeatedly if I might be interested in considering them for employment. I was not qualified for the position because my work history was in financial institutions, but she reassured me that I would be a great fit. I agreed to an interview, but I should have seen the red flags. She didn't even ask me about my qualifications and how that could work in the medical environment. She didn't go into what the job entailed and the training that would occur. She walked me through her office and where I would be stationed and I remember thinking how dirty and unorganized it was. Boxes and paperwork everywhere. Dust everywhere. Bottom line, I should of seen that we are our work space. When patients would ask her questions, she seemed dismissive and disinterested. That is why I only lasted 4 days and left. I wish I would of watched this video prior to my interview.

Huge red flag: If they choose not to pay you what you're worth! I interviewed for a job which was skilled but they stated flat out during the interview was "entry level", and they would have to start me at minimum wage - oh but it would get better after 5 years or so. I found out the hard way that's a huge sign that they couldn't give two shits about you or anyone there. "We're a family here" is another creepy sign of unhealthy environments.

I interviewed at a daycare several years ago. It was 3 of us interviewing at the same time. The interviewer showed up 15 minutes late and didn't apologize. She asked us questions for about an hour that weren't really related to the job, then had us write an example of a lesson plan, although one person was interviewing to be a cook, and I was there to be an assistant. Then after an hour, the owner and her husband showed up (btw, the interviewer was the owners mother). The owner went on and on about how wonderful working there was. She also had this weird obsession with cleaning with bleach. I asked during the interview if I would be expected to be in a classroom by myself since legally I couldn't, and the owners husband said "why are you so worried about that?" They hired all three of us on the spot. All three of us quit in under a year and a half. It was THE WORST job I ever had. That place had an extremely high turnover rate. At least 5 people quit within my first year there.

Did you cover group interviews? I've heard a career coach from get employed actually advise against them! For a few reasons-not only are they stressful, demeaning cattle calls, they usually don't result in getting hired and violate privacy(any interview skills/knowledge you have is displayed for competitors) and are a sign the company isn't even aware of what they're looking for. Just received an invite for one of these and declined happily.

However, the second boss was pretty friendly at first, then seemed kind of unenthusiastic. The first interview was more of a conversation, but the second was just me answering behavorial questions and him writing it down. "Do you have children?".. Been asked that, then told "We are looking for someone with no children or outside obligations...things that might take away from availability for the position"....um, this was for a receptionist position for a medical group years ago...translation: We are looking for someone who has NO life or someone who will drop everything in their life to be available to cover 2 or three positions here in our practice for the price of one...expect to never get out of here before 7:00 or 9:00 pm and expect to be pulled off tasks to cover other tasks we put on you last minute only to be treated poorly for not managing to get ALL tasks for all positions done with in the 8 hr period we alot you that will actually be 10+ hours when you'll stay because you'll know we expect you to without even asking because we will simply act like you should and act nonchalantly as if it's still work time even as 5:30 rolls around just waiting to see if you'll have the guts to bring up it's time for you to leave. We like putting good workers in that awkward position.....then also we will be fully aware even 10 hrs isn't actually enough time either, but we will make sure to make it a point to put lots of pressure on you about overtime and how we dislike it just to keep that fire under your ass, while placing more and more responsibility on you at the same pay as the one position we discussed at the interview when we hired you....and see children might get in the way of all that so...thanks for taking your time and putting in the effort, but no thanks because you had kids even though you are incredibly well qualified😊...NEXT!👀...🙄😒. Well, just my past experiences as to what those kind of comments translate too because I've unfortunately had the experience of being offered positions at these places and accepted and this was the result. Sad but true....and no I'm not a new graduate or uneducated with no experience. I have experience in much more advanced positions than medical secretary or basic office help and I've worked a several different feilds at different skill, education and experience levels and really the one thing I find to be in common with all set ups where you are working for someone else is that all employers want more for less than what any good quality worker is worth and since their are always going to be people who don't understand that yet who are much more appealing to employers, even when the most qualified person is willing to take the job anyway. The employer will chose the candidate most likely to be exploited for less pay if they feel they can be trained successfully.

Hi thanx for your great advices. Just could you please tell a little more about what means "getting warm body at the position". Because right now I am interviewing with a start-up company who seem very eager to hire me, despite in my opinion I missed to answer some of their questions in best way. This makes me worried if I am about to be hired by a company that is a good fit to me.
@CareerSuccess
@CareerSuccess 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Here's what I meant! Be wary of companies eager to hire you with little to no knowledge of your experience. "Getting a warm body in the position" simply means the organization, isn't focused on the right fit, but rather just getting someone in the position as quickly as possible. There could be multiple reasons for this aggressive movement. Usually when things are too good to be true, there's a reason behind it. Ensure you are researching as much as you can before making the decision to accept the position. It is alright, to decline an offer especially if there are valid red flags.

I just had #5 happened to me. I just literally applied today and they called me 2 hours before and ask me if I could be at their open interview. They completely overlooked the fact that I have an advance degree. Another thing I noticed was they didn't give a detailed job description and rather gave an average salary to make the job look more appealing to the average job seeker. They never awnsered my email questions and my rule of thumb is if I see 3-4 negative reviews on the company they're not good.

One employer asked me this question which I found peculiar...it goes something like “has any manager given you a bad feedback that was not constructive, where you found personal but not true, how would you respond or how would you react to it?” Even though I explained a few times, it never happened in my past since all my managers were professional and gave great feedback. She wasn’t happy, she kept asking “like never? Anything you recall?” In the end I said “well maybe they did but I either never noticed or they said it tactfully.”

I haven't been asked specifically uncomfortable questions in an interview, but one interviewer kept trying to find out if I was single & kept staring at the "girls" despite the fact I was wearing a business suit & the top was NOT low cut. I stood up, told him I didn't want to waste anymore of his time b/c I knew we weren't a fit, & that me & my breasts would not be taking the job. He turned red & I walked out. I got a new job 3 weeks ago. It was a traumatizing experience. Manager made me rush thru my computer training that teaches me how to use the software. Day 3, he’s throwing me to the wolves; I’m answering phone calls and helping customers not having an idea of what to do or say. This mgr would constantly show up 3-4 hours late, sometimes not at all. I’d have to keep calling him asking for help and he’d always answer the phone like I’m inconveniencing him/he can’t be bothered with me/he’s irritated with me. One day I had a line of guests complaining that they all had been charged twice, I didn’t know what to do or how to solve the problem. I called my mgr for help and he blamed another coworker. It was so stressful I started drinking again 😂 It’s like my manager hired a receptionist (me) to take his place or something bc he don’t wanna be there

OMG! My last boss had all all these warning signs! She showed up almost 30 minutes late for my interview, her cabinet and sample room was disorganized, she asked me if I had kids and was married and she also asked me where I lived. I learned once I was there, the turnover rate was extremely high. On my 2nd day there, one girl was fired and she was only working there for only a couple of months. (she sent the girl to the other room and told us other employees that she was going to fire her before she told the girl). She called in another girl to replace the 1st girl that same day. She only lasted 2 months and ended up quitting in the middle of the day. About 2 months later, the 3rd girl that worked in the office and started to months before me ended up quitting in the middle of the day (she only lasted 4 months total). The 4th girl that she hired to replace the 3rd girl, noticed the fuckery with the owner and office and ended up quitting after only a week. She ended up firing me after working for her 6.5 months for being rude (Yes, I know. Ironic). I can't wait until her business fails. I will be definitely celebrating her failure.

I’m currently interviewing and I noticed some red flags from the first interview. First, they mentioned that they were supposed to have someone in the position months ago, but couldn’t find anyone they wanted to hire so they redid the interview process with new candidates. Second, they followed up with me after the first interview and invited me for a second interview- but wouldn’t give me directions to the location UNTIL it was “closer” to the interview day. A day before the second interview, I still hadn’t received directions, so I reached out- they apologized, said they were busy with finals week, and sent the directions. I get to the location to have my interview, and the supervisor isn’t there because of a “family emergency” so I had to interview with everyone else but him until he came back. The supervisor reached out weeks later to interview with him and his supervisor. We scheduled the date, I show up- and the supervisor is not there AGAIN, so I had to interview with a new person without him. Then he reached out to me a couple of days later and said he had another “family emergency” and would like to still meet with me. I hesitated at first, then I responded and agreed to meet. However I haven’t received a confirmation. I feel it in my soul that they already have someone who they’re planning to hire. But the inconsistencies with this company was horrible.

Michelle, you are correct to notice red flags in this situation. It sounds like you are being patient throughout the process, which can be challenging. Emergencies and things happen, which is part of being human. Great job hanging in there on the delayed process. I know this video is over a year old but have to share a recent red flag. I earned my masters in addictions counseling last year and passed the state certification in October. I am getting tons of interviews but one place sent bad vibes. First apparently they didn't receive my resume so instead of asking questions they started asking me textbook questions that anyone taking a basic drug class would know. After that I was then offered a job on the spot. Didn't tell me anything about it, just offered it and told me I needed to tell them by Friday (ths was Wednesday). I kept getting pressured to take the job on the spot. So I took it and things came out, such as I would have to work overnights on weekends, and require driving patients to appointments. I should mention that while in school this place was known as a rough place that paid lower than other places and more entry level, so the idea of them hiring me for a more management job was weird. Then they wanted me to start the following week and when I told them I had other obligations was told that I needed to put them first. While looking at reviews it said they have a huge turnover. IEven though I need a job and the pay was good it had bad vibes so I turned it down.

Gosh my most recent job, which I left due to extreme toxicity and questionable practices, was at a so-called family-run business. The place was rife with nepotism! Incidentally the owner-manager belonged to the same ethnicity as me, which I didn't think much of at first, because the team seemed diverse enough at first. Gradually the owner-manager harassed, mistreated, and abused all the competent local workers and replaced all of them with workers who are new immigrants of his own (our) ethnicity, so they'd be easier to exploit and that too on bare minimum wages! Each day was a torture, working for that narcissist. He'd throw us under the bus for his own faults, gaslight us, yell at us using choice words, fly off the handle at the tiniest thing and make us cry, etc. Ultimately I had no option but to quit. And oh, him, his wife, and toddler (with her noisy toys) would be hanging out in the office area regularly, and it seemed more like a noisy daycare or restaurant than an office. Extremely distracting and impossible to work amongst all that. Glad I left that hell-hole.

1. They miss the phone interview. My husband had one set up with a manager and the guy NEVER called him. In the previous "set up" interview, the guy kept interrupting my husband, really didn't have an idea what experience my husband had, and put my husband on hold several times.Yes-- 2 red flags. The third with that place was that they were reluctant to pay even fair wages despite experience. For me, well, here's one. I was called to set up an interview. I was very honest upfront and said, "your ad said 8 am till 4. I have a child and cannot work before those hours and not long after. Are you sure these will be the steady hours? " The woman assured me that's fine M-F it was those hours. Well, I go in for the interview and they start saying on Wed you have to open the school at 6 am but you will get home early that day! I walked out. I said you lied to me. I was honest with you and you lied and wasted my time. Later on that school had one administrator arrested on dubious charges. The reputation of the place tanked. Karma. Dodged a bad one.

Was once asked if I have children, years ago when I had only my son. Told her yes and was told they don't want to hire someone with children. 🤨WT#! Offered a job yesterday and then again today WITHOUT being interviewed. called or met in person at all. This company's owner saw my resume after I applied through indeed and texts me a job offer where the position calls for 7 days a week, 10:00 pm to 6:00 am, 500.00 every 2 wks and if I start I have to start immediately, like they wanted somebody (me or whoever else will take it I guess??🤔??)to start yesterday night, well, um..let's see, never met you, not enough $$ for those kinds of hrs and that kind of shift, and it says right on my resume I am currently working another job, where I make more $$ per hr, obviously, gees, and get paid weekly, but the issue is it's less hours so looking for a job with more hours, but um, not 56 hrs a week, working all 7 days at that low of pay, seriously?....and lastly, how can I start the very same day you just toss me a text with the business location, which I know is legit because it's a national chain, and schedul demands when I would need to at least give my current company notice of some sort, I mean at least a day. If this current company was awful to me and the pay and the hours for the new one where just what I was looking for it would be different, but neither one of those is the case. The person sent me another text and it's clear they are desperate for peo peo people, like you say...it feels like they just want a body and with those scheduling demands and that pay I imagine it's hard to keep people, but I really wonder what is going on with some employers these days. I have also encountered a few interviewers who come off rude or yes, ones that let you sit there forever. I just walk out on the ones who have you sitting there forever. I just leave. They won't treat you well once employed with them either.

Kickinrocks926, thanks for leaving a comment. I'm sorry that you've experienced such a poor interview (or actually non-interview) experience. It is great that you were intelligent enough to see the signs before simply accepting the offer. You know the signs now and you will eventually find what is right for you. Good luck! Keep me posted.

I am just wondering...i got today the interview invitation. The email was short, not even saying thank you for the interest in the position. There was just a request to confirm my availability for a technical interview. I responded, confirming the availability and asked if it is gonna be onsite and if i need to prepare a presentation for it. As the answer i just got an email with the link for zoom meeting and no text that answers my other questions. Feels weird. Does it seem as the red flags for you?

It appears that their recruiting team (if that's who you've been corresponding with) isn't the best at creating a good candidate experience. Unfortunately, I have to say to my clients quite often, do not let a busy, rushed recruiter spoil your thoughts about a company because it still could be quite a good company. Focus more on your experience with the hiring manager. I would send a follow up email to the recruiter, however. Plus, I would share feedback about the recruiter (if that is the person you've been talking to) with the hiring manager.

Recently had an interviewer who was 5 minutes late for an online interview. When she finally came online she was standing over the computer with her coat on. She apologized for being late but kept her coat on for the entire interview. She was not prepared or interested.

Here's one. I worked in a union our employer had a team of lawyers that were paid hundreds of thousands if not millions to exploit every loophole in the contract. They wanted us to waive turn around and meal penalties. Never let your employer get you to waive or give up anything. Always make them pay. Never ever work off the clock and never try to save your employer money. If you're in charge of a project always go over budget.

Not me but an old college professor of mine said he was asked if he was gay (he wasn't) in an interview. He turned the job down.

I keep seeing if the Interviewer is late that is a "red flag". Not so sure about this. Life happens - unless it is a dedicated HR person, most managers are working interviews into their work schedule. If a client meeting runs over or there is a family emergency for someone at work, would not be a reason to dismiss a potentially good employer or position.
