Drilling and Live Wrestling with better competition. Wrestle guys who are at the next level, eg... high school with college. Powerlifting variations of the Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift incorporating back/bicep day, chest/shoulders/tricep day and legs day: hypertrophy phase (to gain new muscle), power phase(to gain strength) and peak phase (maximizing that new strength), intertwined with healthy diet and proper rest/sleep. Rock or tree climbing. Rowing(an Iranian favorite). Gymnastics(another Iranian favorite). MMA(Bo knows). Judo. Film study of Dan Gable, Cael, Dave/Mark Schultz, John Smith, Kolat, Jordan Borroughs, Dave Taylor, Kyle Dake, Yianni, ect... . Bumping up a weight class or two to retain that new strength. Wrestling at or very near your natural body weight. The Greek mind-body connection. Isometrics via running/wrestling in the soft sand(more resistance), mud and water. Researching and emulating Dan Gable, who drilled himself to near death each practice, but was unstoppable. Improve hand fighting techniques and fabricating angles to open up crisper shots. Chasing the best competition, whether it be in your weight class or bumping up a weight class, like Rivera did v. Micic. Having fun and constantly improving. Visualization of moves. Putting yourself in uncomfortable situations, like Jason Nolf does to improve. Jogging is a waste of effort and time. Anerobic supersedes aerobics, indeed. Try explosive sprints or plyrometrics over wasteful jogging. Rope pulls and hammer curls for an awesome grip. Athlean X website has a physical therapy point of view on lifting and will retain your optimum level.

@@BrennanCarpenfield , too much mass is detrimental to speed and endurance. Requires more oxygen to more muscles. Quick twitch lean muscle is more proficient for wrestling. Find a happy medium/balance with your phases, sets and reps. Explosiveness is paramount in your accumulating success.

This is my wrestling story. I am a wrestler from Alabama which is not known for wrestling. We are mainly a football school and started up a wrestling program when I was in 8th grade. My offensive line coach talked me into wrestling. At first it was just something to do in the off season to stay in shape. My freshman year I started on varsity at 170. I went on that season and finished with a 1-36 record. Even though I got embarrassed all season I fell in love with the sport and the culture. I went on to grow 4 inches and gain 50 pounds. I wrestled 220 my sophomore year. I found a little more success winning my first JV tournament, did not qualify for state, and going roughly 12-15 on varsity. My junior year football season I got up to about 255 for football and cut back down to 220 for wrestling season. I ended up going about 15-10 and broke my hand my first match of sectionals. I got up to about 265 for football season and decided to wrestle heavyweight my senior year. I found a lot more success going into sectionals with a record of 22-4. I qualified for state and ended up placing 7th at state. I was blessed to receive my first offer from the only college in Alabama with a wrestling program, Huntingdon College. I got offered to represent a travel team from Georgia and traveled to Tennessee for my first tournament. In my first match I very unfortunately broke my leg, tore all of the ligaments in my ankle, strained my Achilles’ tendon and got a high ankle sprain. I had to get surgery and have 2 plates, 5 screws, bands and a tightrope procedure. I am now on the road to recovery and want to know if anyone has any advice for me as I get ready to wrestle in college. Thank you for reading and god bless.

When I was a freshman in junior high back in the day. I had a great coach that took a few of us to a summer camp at Iowa State. Our floor counselors were the college wrestlers. I was embarrassed to ask what it took to be a state champ. But Pete Galia gave me great advice that I pass on to this day. I encourage all wrestlers to go to camps especially out of their state.

I have a similar story about going to camp at Iowa with my coaches and teammates. Camps are a great time to learn and ask questions, but also to have a good time with your buddies.

I just want to let you know that I enjoy watching your channel. As a freshman in NY, it was my first year on Varsity at 182, and I went 5-9. I want to improve a lot more, and win sectionals. Since everything’s closed due to Corona, I’m working on Cardio and Calistenics. When everything clears down, I’ll do the spring and summer practices at my school and other clubs.

Not everyone can afford clubs and camps what alternatives would you recommend to improve on a budget ?
@FancoWrestling
@FancoWrestling 5 жыл бұрын
That's a very good point. For anybody who can't afford camps and clubs, I recommend looking up videos online and studying those. See if your coach will allow you access to your HS room for drilling the videos that you study. Then I'd also recommend conditioning. One great place for online technique is from 4X PA State champ and 2X NCAA champ Cary Kolat: www.kolat.com/. I hope that helps!

Very good video bros! I have always liked this kind of sport, fighting is very very interesting and challenging but I have never done wrestling, I watched videos and was interested in the techniques. If I have a son in the future, I will encourage him to take up wrestling. It can be done safely, without taking any risks, I think. The most important feature of this sport, in my opinion, is the idea of friendship, collaboration among wrestlers, very useful during tag team matches. My congratulations to Brendan, I think he has got the right spirit/inclination to fight.

I have no wrestling background but this is my sophomore year of high school and 2nd year wrestling ever in my life… Both years I qualified from regionals but always fell short during sectionals… The whole year I go against state finalists even state champs.. I have great competition, and I think Georgia is known for that comp!!

Hey I have a question, I’m trying to get into wrestling I’m a sophomore in high school How should I start? Would it be smarter to first join a Club, Wrestling camp, Or my high school team? Thank You!
@FancoWrestling
@FancoWrestling 5 жыл бұрын
Hey! Great question. I'd recommend getting started in the off-season (right now) by going to a club a few days a week. Don't be discouraged if you wrestle for the first week and can't even get a takedown. I've known guys that have been there and improved by wrestling and training hard. My biggest advice is to not be afraid to ask questions. Coaches and even other wrestlers WILL help you get better if you ask. Or you could even get one-on-one lessons for a more private practice. Watch videos online on how to get better. I always highlight recommend Cary Kolat's technique: www.kolat.com/. A beginner's camp over the summer may be a great idea to attend also. Then once you do all of this, you'll be ready for the season come October/November when the "real" wrestling starts. Good luck to you!

I'd say going to 2-3 club practices a week is optimal. However, you can always go to more if you're able to do that. Do you have a local club?

@FancoWrestling

It will definitely be tough to start, but really that's any sport in understanding how it works. This summer, study the rules, watch technique videos, and condition so you're ready. I always say try it or you may regret not doing it. And wrestling is a sport that you won't be able to just pick up at 30, 40, 50 years old, like golf or pick-up basketball. Club teams are usually more relaxed and about enjoying the sport, but there is definitely a lot of competition if you're interested. Plus you may meet a lot of really cool people. Keep me updated! Where do you go to school?

Hey pal I just turned 22. Last semester I decided to try my colleges wrestling club out. It was intimidating as hell at first. I got ragdolled then they told me they respected me for coming back and actually started training me. I love it. Ended up getting in the best shape I've ever been in my life. I got down to 195lbs when I was 250lb at my heaviest. Do it man. I was in your exact shoes and was so happy I made the move. Proud Virginia Tech Wrestling club member.
