Great show Big Fella, i think just about anything by Robert Fripp when he's got his Crimson hat on ( when he's doing stuff for other Artists it's almost doable ) it's funny i couldn't remember when you had your accident but now i realise why the 29th of November 2023 is a day you'll never forget, for me it was Saturday 25th November 2023 for that was the Day my life Changed as i had a stroke. After much hair pulling ( WHAT'S LEFT OF IT , THE OLD JOKE ALL DOWN ME BACK, NOT MUCH ON ME HEAD & TO BE HONEST A FEW TEARS ) I've learnt to play a few tunes again, which has made my life a thousand times better. It's funny how Music touches our lives, in fact the first thing I did when I left Hospital was pick up my Guitar and start trying to get my left hand to move. And a special thanks to the staff in Joseph's Ward in Wexford General Hospital because i literally owe them my life. Thanks again Big Fella. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.

I had to chuckle when Giant Steps came up. I've heard so many people describe this as a baptism of fire, so when you said it was like standing in front of a fire hose I nearly p***ed myself laughing. What a great phrase to describe it. My list of solos which defeated me is somewhat longer than yours. Ever tried to keep up with DiMeola on Elegant Gypsy or a Return To Forever tune. Man, I nearly lost it trying back in the early 80's. Now I set my sights far more realistically, telling myself 'who needs all those notes, its all about what you leave out'. Sometimes I can actually convince myself that its true. But, usually, not.

Great vid John - showing some mortality is good practice I reckon 😎👌 For me.. It's pretty much every solo these days 😂 I'll learn the first few bars, then just aim for the "gist" of it. 🙈 I'm too impatient in my old age - not an ideal trait for a guitar tutor 🤣 Saying that... I'll learn solo's in full for lessons - if I have to 😜

Oh man! Joe Satriani "Crush of Love" is one of my favorites!! (It was featured on a Guitar Player magazine sound page in the eighties).

hi John, if i'm trying to learn a solo i'll load the song into Reaper and using the tempo control set to maintain pitch, i can select the part of the solo i'm working on to loop it and with the tempo control can work away at it until the tempo is back to 100%. i find this a great way to learn them as it maintains the pitch of the original track and keeps your fingers in the correct frets for playing at full speed 😁

I've personally found that tremolo picking ( a la Van Halen) has helped enormously when increasing speed with alternate picking. I've found that in my journey over 40 years that my legato, and alternate picking have got better in stages, and sometimes my picking was better, and sometimes my legato was. I realised several years ago, I was looking for fluency rather than just sheer speed. If you are going to play fast it's better to be accurate. Also just putting in an occasional fast run, sounds better (more impressive) than an endless stream of notes all the time. Thing is, what some of us find hard, some find easy, and vice versa. Everybody has things they are good at, and not so good at. My playing will probably never be "perfect" but I'll keep trying to improve as best I can. It's more about the journey than arriving at a destination, I've found!! 🤔😁

Prince sure could play the guitar. I have seen many instances when I was just stunned by his talent.

Ben Eller just did video last week on playing Gary Moore's Out in the fields solo. It's way above my abilities.

Too many songs to mention. My only "but" is I try not to emulate anyone else or practice full solos. I'll steal a lick or two, but am not so good as to try anything crazy difficult. I play my guitar to have fun and tend not to stretch beyond my low ability. Keeps me enjoying it when I find something familiar as I noodle.

Modesty!!! A rare quality. On a separate matter I had the Larry Coryell, Paco de Lucia and John McCoughlin thing on VHS for years. I loved JMc. Unfortunately, the saying "never meet your hero" is very apt in JMcs case.

Can't give you five John, probably because I dont take on anything I know is too far above me. But I've been trying to play Jan Akkerman's solo in 'Tommy' which is part of the Focus epic called Eruption (nothing to do with EVH). I've got it all except the last little flurry of notes. I know what I'm meant to be playing, can't do it with alternate picking, but can do it at 80% tempo with a mixture of alternate picking, economy picking and two pull-offs. But I cannot get that last 20% of speed. It's infuriating!

@lathofheaven1017. Big fan of early Akkerman myself. Always throwing something in the mix to leave you floundering. Good luck.

@@russellmorgan5611 I've been working on it for ages. Going to keep plugging away at it, and then upload a video when I've cracked it. (If I ever do!) Akkerman is a beast. 😆

To hopefully make you feel better: on the 40th anniversary of Machine Head, Joe Satriani also struggled with the Highway Star solo. It at least didn't sound so fluent. Even Satriani.
