Intermittent fasting can be divided into 5 stages, from feeding to post absorptive to gluconeogenesis to ketosis to protein conservation. Each stage is accompanied by different physiologic processes, so understanding the stages allows you to target the benefits. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

Hi, been a fan for years. I have a very good question for you. I’m eating those miracles noodles made from glucomannan omad. It’s been 6 days & I’m in large ketosis. I’m not spiking insulin so my question is. If I’m only having this & staying in full ketosis, am I missing other components of a regular fast? Or is this close to the same? I couldn’t find much info on this & thought you would know.

I'm an Uber driver and I was 3.5 days into a fast when my passangers wanted to stop at In N Out. They offered to buy my a burger. I was so tempted to take the free food, break my fast, get a protein style burger and keep it keto. I had every reason to justify doing it. But I resisted. They ate the food in my car too. It smelled so good

Congrats on improving your health and hope you've kept the weight off. I just have my doubts on the breakdown of those numbers. I'm not an expert, nor have I fasted for that long. From the data I've seen, typically the ratio of fat to water weight lost should be reversed, 2lbs : 10lbs.

Sept 2020 I read The Diabetes Code and started eating LCHF combined with a 36/12 fasting schedule, as recommended in the book. Within 2 weeks I was off my diabetic meds and now 8 months later I have lost 135 pounds. So many changes have happened since then, this information has been life changing. One of the most surprising was that I had to switch to an old pair of glasses because my eyesight improved.

@@Skelly777able - Dr Fung discusses ADF in his books, “The Obesity Code” and “The Complete Guide to Fasting”, as a viable fasting schedule (IIRC), so you should be fine with it, depending on your overall goals. Both books are wonderful, and *highly recommended* ! I have insulin issues😬🤪, so ADF is my preferred approach, fwiw, after an extended (>72 hrs) fast...hang in there, and DON’T GIVE UP! Even if you have a few “mis-fires” and have to stop/start a few times, just get back to it and keep going - you’ll get there, eventually!💕 I’m saying that as much for myself as for you, I suppose😢😊...it’s ‘easy’ to fall back into old patterns when something you’re trying doesn’t appear to be working. I’m sure you know what I mean - we’re all a constant work in progress! I find that what I do one week usually manifests itself the following week, so if I can just remind myself of that, it usually helps me push through the rough patches...cheers!🙏🏼❤️

To add to my last comment I'm a 57 year old man 5' 10 1/2" who started intermittent fasting on August 27, 2020 weight of 310lbs. I have lost 113lbs so far intermittent fasting. I was a heavy smoker and drinker (Beer and whiskey). I ate fast food daily. Was on many psychological medications. My BP was 200/106. I used a CPAP machine for many years. Today May 15, 2021 my weight is 197lbs I no longer smoke or drink. Or take any prescription drugs! Zero!!! My BP is 117/74. And I no longer need my CPAP machine. And my blood panels are perfect. I still would like to lose 20-30 more pounds and stay at that weight for the rest of my life. All in all it's been a very exciting and long 8 and a half months. But I have learned so much about fasting and my health. And became a much healthier and happier person. I've gone from size 44 pants to size 32. And from 4X shirts to large (medium soon).

I have lost 30 lbs this month doing a 8/16 intermittent fasting routine. I also stopped drinking soda. I went to the doctor to get my yearly blood work done and he told me that the only way I could have list 30 lbs is if I had malnutrition or had a serious illness. He obviously doesn't understand thevpower of intermittent fasting and dropping your carb intake in half. I was 344 lds last month and now I'm 314 lbs. I feel great. I have more energy. My stomach has shrunk by 4 inches. I feel 10 years younger. I only eat dinner once a week with my wife. I have embraced that feeling of hunger before bed and that large meal for breakfast.

I lost 108 lbs. in a year back in 2009, with NO loose skin afterward. I didn't even realize I was doing any fasting, but I was careful not to snack at night and usually never ate anything 'til I was done working out the next day, which added another three hours. So, I suspect I was very close to the 18/6 without even realizing it. I switched up the exercise between power walking, weight training and step classes at the gym, and also took one day off. This picture of me was taken at the end of one year. Unfortunately, I got fat again, but within 2 weeks of doing 18-22 hour fasts and cutting out the sugar and white flour, I'm down 10 lbs. and feel like I'll be able to get it all off again, and KEEP it off this time. I was always resistant to the very idea of fasting, but now I finally "get it" thanks to Dr. Fung. Thank you, sir, and God bless you! My brother, who wasn't even very overweight, lost 6 lbs. in two weeks. Two of my other friends are reading the book right now. If we all share with friends who are sick and desperate, maybe we can turn this obesity thing around.

Crazy thing is I grew up fasting but I didn’t know what that was, we were just outside as soon as our eyes opened till we were forced inside to eat..anytime we would go back inside we couldn’t come back out so we just stayed outside playing and ate just once a day maybe some snacks. We were so busy running all around we barely ate but once a day maybe 2 times. As an adult I’m eating 3 meals a day a bunch of sitting around and snacking. So I’m going back to what worked when I was a kid/teen.

Hi Louise, I'm considering intermittent fasting. And maybe two meals a day. This is something I haven't tried before, and my fear is that the process will cause me to be too weak to work each day. I suffer from daily fatigue and brain fog, and I have breathing and sleeping problems, among others. So I'm actually inspired by your comment and I think I'm ready to give intermittent fasting and two meals a day a try!

I have fasted 3 days, 5 days, 8 days, 13 days, I was thinking it was14 days and ended my fast too soon. The longest time, 17 days. By the third day my body thought I was starving to death. I was so hungry!!! Day 4, sill hungry, day 5 almost not hungry at all. Day 6 hunger pains gone. I started getting headaches so I looked into it, and it seams that headaches are from detoxing. I need to detox bad!!! I just cleaned my oven with horrible chemicals. Choaked me up several times. Yes I wore a 🎭 mask. Stopped p.....ing after the 8th day. There is so much build up you'll have little bits with your water for days. Ewwww gross. Getting excellently cleaned out by water. On the 13 fast i lost about 15 lbs and on the 17 day fast. I lost 20 lbs. Right now I'm looking at starting another fast. During your fast you will get thousands of temptations. Not just food temptations, the devil wants to cause you to fall any way he can. During those days; food, lust, anger, and the list goes on. Overcome it with prayer. When these things happen, just say what Jesus said. Devil get the behind me. Say to him to...go where Jesus commands you to go. Pray! Dont believe negative thoughts. Pray! God, help me to resist all manor of temptations, in Jesus name.

Then in Oct the same year I had to go to ER and they put me in the hospital for 7 days with no food or water. Not even a sip of water until day 5. The ER doc said we dont have to do surgery this time, but if you keep coming back we do. I literally was scared to eat after this event and lost 20 pounds. However Keto has helped me. I am drinking plenty of water, but not so much fiber. I am very regular now. Though I know I will get a flare up if I get a bad constipation as that is when things go bad. I will try your method.

@@robertgreene2621 Try One Meal A Day (OMAD) with low carb food to let your body adapt. Water or black coffee/tea only (helps keep hunger away). First few days are the hard part, then energy levels are high all the time. I still do OMAD now. Once your body unlocks the fat store by lowering insulin, you have a massive supply of energy from your fat. As soon as you eat, the fat is locked away for another 4-6 hours. I only eat dinner in the evening. Just drink a few glasses a day and more if your pee is too yellow! Have a bit extra salt when you do eat. Longer fasts once you build some confidence. @@LemireCassie Hi. A story. Well first I went to Dr. Jason Fung's online website. Research for it. I read everything and watched all video's on that website. I also watched Dr. Berg here on KZfaq as well. He gives excellent advice on foods, good carbs, bad carbs, artificial sugars good and bad and recipes. Nutritional values, how foods effect each organ in the body and much more. I live in Western Australia so options for Keto foods seemed limited but I was surprised at how easy much of it was available. Make sure you read for "Total Carbs" on each item as that is most important. Some Keto store foods are NOT Keto. I researched Keto recipes here on KZfaq and began making my own breads, biscuits, icecream and so forth. I found stores that sold Keto foods, like mayonnaise, biscuits, Nutritional yeast (B12 supplement enhanced) and much more. Secondly I went off all meds that I had been on for just over a month. Jardiamet and Metformin. From there I stopped eating breakfast and lunch, mainly because I was never really hungry at those times anyway. The problem I had was eating from around 3pm till late at night and all carb loaded, sugar loaded or fully processed. Hunger for some people is difficult to get through. Three no/low carb meals a day is fine then working your way from 3-2-1 or 2-1 to 1. Ghrelin is the hunger hormone. Hunger comes in waves but over time the less you eat the less hungry you become until it eventually goes away. Never snack in between meals, this is key. During the day I drank green tea and black coffee. I eat dinner at 5pm and end at 6pm, leafy greens, no carb vegetables, added nutritional yeast (gives cheesy flavor) with moderate meat, throw in hemp and chea seeds, lots of butter and olive oil, coffee with full fat cream and sometimes blueberries, strawberries, raspberries with full cream yogurt or cream. I vary with salads, avocados, home made bread sandwiches, a variety of foods. I do gardening which is my exercise and this also ups my Vit. D level for my immunity. Couple of hours in the garden which lowers my blood sugars too. I did not do extreme exercise nor do I garden every day. I want to add that I have been diabetic for some 25-30 odd years without knowing it and am 63 years old. So anyone can do this. Fasting. After a week of one meal a day I began doing two days without food. (48 hrs). Then progressed to three days to get myself into autophagy. Look it up. My body began to live off my fat stores. I did this twice a week. I needed to not only lose weight but to lose my visceral fats from my stomach, liver, pancreas. It was within the first month that I lost 5 kilos then dropped the other 5 in the next two months. My stomach flattened, and I reached my goal weight. Some people can lose more in three months some less. Depending on your age, weight and metabolism. However I now have energy I never knew I had and can't sit down for long before doing something. My entire body has become young again inside and out. Long read I know. The most important thing is to understand food, your body and what is needed for it. Take your time and research. I hope this helps you. Anything else you want to know just hit me up.

@@Josaline100 I so appreciate your help. I will read up on it for sure. As of right now I workout 6 days a week, drink a protein drink with honey, strawberries, blueberry juice, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, and coconut oil I add water. Then I have a protein bar. And dinner whatever we are having done by 6. I am not one who loves to eat. I would rather swallow three pills. I drink water a lot. Fat free milk 6 ounces. and no coffee or tea. I was thinking I would drink my protein drink at 11 and then not eat until 5. Your thoughts?
@Josaline100
@Josaline100 3 жыл бұрын
@@LemireCassie the trick is to eat whole foods. I assume you are diabetic type 2. If so, you cannot eat any sugars. Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes all turn into glucose which is sugar. Honey is sugar and you cannot eat it. Some vegetables have higher carbs too. Sweet potato has a higher sugar ratio to a potato. Pumpkin is higher in carbs as are some root vegetables. Peas are sweet, sugar. Never eat corn or any corn products such as corn oil. Never eat any vegetable oils other than olive and avocado. As for drinking your food, doing that increases the carbs from fruits and vegetables turning them into glucose, not terribly bad but if diabetic it will keep your blood sugars up. Blending fresh foods also loses nutrients due to processing. This is why I say eat your foods whole. The berries and seeds you eat are fine and good for you, but remove other fruits (if diabetic (and) want to lose weight). Check your dinner and make sure there are no carbs in it or sugars added or thickeners made from wheat. As for protein bars, they will have added sugar and carbs. (unless it is keto specific). Do not consume low fat dairy especially milk. It is loaded with sugar. Milk is bad. It is a disaccharide made up of glucose and galactose units = lots of sugar. Try plain full fat yogurt and full fat cream and butter. If consuming alternative type milks, check for sugar. Eating high fat foods including all dairy and meats will "not" put weight on. The total amount of fat should be 75% of your diet per day. Avocados are high in good fat and very good for you. Great for a dip with vegetable sticks. Meat does increase blood sugars but eaten in moderation is fine. I eat meat once every two days and no more than 6oz per serve. Check any salad dressing, pickles, chutneys for sugar, usually very heavy in sugar. Remember you want your body to live off your fat storage and not from your sugar storage. If you are not overweight, I would cut down my fat intake to 60-65% per day. All this might sound terribly restrictive, but when I found out that high fat foods which were my favorites that I thought I was not supposed to eat, I was so excited. Now I can eat cheeses and cream, the skin on my meats, more than one avocado a week and so much more. Again a long post Lemire. If you have read and watched both Dr. Berg and Dr. Fung everything I am telling is from these two gentleman. As for when to eat, having food twice a day is fine but will not get you into autophagy and ketosis until you do a two to three day fast. Remember that fasting renews new cells, out with old and in with the new. Fasting also creates clarity, energy and is the true detox. EDIT: I forgot to mention this but over exercising does not help to lose weight. It will however keep you toned :D Again I hope this was of some help.

@@Josaline100 Thank you! That was amazing. I truly appreciate it. I am not type 2. However, it won't be long. I am 58. I want to stop it before it happens. Can you share with me what a day of eating is for you and fasting as well as the times you eat. You've been a great help. I am not a meat lover. I have a burger a week and chicken. I am not a potato person. but chips I do like. The organic ones. I actually don't eat a lot, just the wrong food when I do. I eat one meal a day. I have been drinking protein drinks for 3 years now as my breakfast. So, I should probably switch to keto bars. Any help will be appreciated. Yes, I have read and watched the videos of the doctors. I went low carb, then after three weeks or so to keto and then was able to do One Meal a Day with 23/1, and it feels so good. I never weighed myself. I have gone down 8 cm around my belly (button), two holes on my belt, two holes on my Apple Watch strap. The Apple Watch Health app has all parameters going into the positive direction. It is remarkable. I started end of May 2023 and half July you can really see the graphs improving. I don’t know what I weigh right now. I don’t care. I measure by belly a couple of times per week. From 124cm down to 116 right now, 105 would be nice to reach. We‘ll see. I am not putting myself under pressure. I even had six strawberries tonight after dinner. I change between OMAD and TMAD, canned sardines for 72 hours only every so often, Apple Cidre Vinegar and Bulletproof Coffee with MCT Oil (that really has a positive effect on my overall feeling - but you need to see how much is tolerable for you, and not towards the end of fasting period) Good luck on your journey and discovering what is working best for you.

I started IF with keto, low processed foods, no sugar and artificial sweeteners to heal my insulin resistance. I added sprint HIIT workouts twice a week. It felt exhilarating! I went from 182 to 140 in 4 months. I had days where I went off plan and just did a 36 hr fat blasting fast to get the extra weight I had gained off. I spent 4 days in Disneyworld and gained a few pounds lost it in a week. The great thing about a fasting lifestyle is that you can go “off plan” and just jump right back into it and maintain your weight. I love Dr. Mindy Pelz’s (checkout her book “Fast like a girl”) videos in addition to Dr. Jason’s & Dr. Berg’s.

Wow! Good job! You are SO close to your goals. If you eat your one meal early enough in the day, you can increase your time fasting, overnight. If you keep making your window ( to eat) smaller, you'll be close enough to take the next step. NO food for, 24 hrs 48, or even 72 hrs. You'll get the best results with 72 hours. You're SO close to being there. You'll be amazed at how good you'll feel, and how much weight ( fat, only) that you'll lose. OMAD you are also losing muscle, as the Doctor says: full fasting your body will only lose the fat. You can do it! Good luck! ( I've had great success with fasting over the years. It's allowed me to easily stay at my ideal weight, size 4, for over ten years now. I love it!!)

Too bad Jesus tells us not to boast about fasting and to do it in secret. Muslims boast about it and have to do it as part of their religion, and Catholics are actually just replacing weeping for Tammuz for Lent, because that’s all it really is. Both are Mystery Babylon Religion and will soon merge for the coming antichrist. Good thing us Bible believing Christians don’t fall for any deception and have freedom to worship Christ as God intended us to do. Come out of Mystery Babylon Religion. Remember there are two religions, Bible believing Christianity, and Mystery Babylon Religion which is all false religions, Islam and Catholicism and Hinduism and Buddhism and all other false religions are one and the same.

I've done every diet (gained, lost and regained with bonuses) keto the longest (2 years with only small amount of weight loss) but then eventually crave carbs (blood group A). On vegetarian diets to suit blood type I gain heaps. As most people though with any diet I start to think of what I shouldn't have then feel guilty when I break it. This guilt then turns to binges. So now at 66 I do 22/2 and eat anything I want (SAD) in my 2 hour window. Best thing I ever did. It's usually lunchtime feeding and I have lost 6kg over 3 months so far, albeit it's slow but WITHOUT guilt...... donuts, fry ups, sandwiches, pizza, pasta, potatoes, icecream, all the things everyone says you shouldn't have. I'm then not hungry until the next day and if I have a function to go to I can even go longer on the fast without qualms and eat later but I always bring it back to lunchtime the following day. Love love love it. When not eating I drink lots of herbal teas. Also take vitamins and minerals in case I miss out on some nutrients. My exercise is walking the dog for about 20 minutes. Have more to lose but don't care how long it takes now that my body and mindset is really happy. Blood works look good as well, including the thyroid that was struggling previously, borderline Hashimoto (doctor's words) to near normal (couldn't believe that one).

@@danielwetmore7019 thank you, yes doing well and keeping this way of eating as it really works for me. To finally find something after decades of struggling is a relief. Living in the southern most island state of Australia means we have come through relatively unscathed from the virus apart from a few inconsistent political choices that let the bug in but most of us have had the time to learn what to take like vit D, zinc and such to hopefully get through it if it does present. Our healthcare is quite good for this sort of thing.

My sweet grandma broke a molar (#2) eating unpopped and partially popped popcorn kernals. It took 3 days to get her in at her dentist. She didn't eat anything during that time and drank only room temp water. The tooth could not be saved and was pulled, which was grueling for the dentist ("Your grandma has good bone!"). It took an additional 3 days before she could eat anything. Obviously, she had pain during those 6 days of water-only fasting. This was last year, and she's still fasting! She water fasts for the first 7 days of each month, then does different fasts as she feels like it during the rest of the month. Kind of a hard way to get into fasting, but hey! It worked. In her 80's, she now has this lifestyle that improves LIFE. I'm so proud of her for that.

My best advice is to start off with an 18/6 schedule (18 hours of no calorie intake, 6 hours of calorie intake) because it's the easiest to maintain. I do my eating window from 11am - 7pm, which works great with my work schedule. Just doing intermittent fasting and reduced calorie intake, I'm down from 450 pounds to 402 pounds in a few months. I am going to start doing alternate day fasting and then work up to doing multi-day fasting (3 or 4 days at a time for me). I wish you all the very best of luck in your endeavors! 😊
