Anyway, I'm thinking about becoming a CRNA, but my current degree is in math education so I am considering taking an accelerated bsn degree proceed from then on to becoming an CRNA. I was browsing youtube for more information and real life stories and yours was really informative.

Hey Aisha! Firstly, GREAT vids. Thank you for providing your awesome insight. I am needing some of it in my situation. Sooo.. -I'm a new grad RN -Now in an ICU residency (will be placed in either CCU or MICU, not CVICU or CSICU..will be off orientation in May) -Working in Chattanooga, TN -Will begin an Online RN-BSN at Western Governors University in March -Considering ICU travel nursing after my first year -Seeking to get my CCRN, GRE, ACLS, PALS, BLS, all done -Try to become charge nurse once in while, and possibly participate in councils -Hoping to become well-acquantied with the CRNAs/Anesthiologists/Nurse manager of my hospital/unit -Thinking about taking grad courses in Pharm, Health Assess, and some more (later on), and grade well in them Now, these are all ideas of mine, that, after doing research, I felt formulated into a good concoction before applying later to CRNA school. However, the only thing I can't really change so much is my current 3.35 GPA. And with the school that I am now going into for my BSN (WGU), many schools consider their competency-based grading system (aka pass/fail), as a 3.0 GPA when I graduate. I am choosing this school because I can finish it very soon and have all my tuition/expenses paid off, free, no repayment. Should I worry, with putting everything I mentioned into consideration? Any advice/tweaks? THANKS! :)

I SAY GO FOR IT!!! I am not an expert, but I can just speak from my experience, my classmates, and what I am seeing happening with those that are now getting accepted to other schools. I don't even think you need to take Pharm graduate courses. Don't spend too much time filling up your resume, because that could be the year that the odds were in your favor to get accepted. I have friends and know of other friends of mine with 3.0 GPAs that are now in CRNA school- don't stress about them. Get the requirements that you need, ASAP, and apply. Get your BSN, do well in those classes, get your CCRN, and certs, and apply. Travel nursing is great and I wish I got to do it, I just wanted to get to this stage in my life ASAP. It's all up to where you see your path. If you want to get those experiences and travel the country... do it and don't look back. I have a lot of classmates who did travel nursing and I am sure it looks great on a resume.
@praisetinungki
@praisetinungki 7 жыл бұрын
First, thank you for your response! -What do you mean when "it could be the year that the odds were in your favor to get accepted"? As in, the applicant pool and the chances of getting may be easier the sooner I apply? -So I shouldn't worry too much that my GPA may be sub-3.3 after I finish my BSN through WGU? -So your friends actually had 3.0/sub-3.2 GPAs upon admission?! What were their background/resume/years/type of experience/certs before entering CRNA school? -How many schools did you/should I apply to? What factors should I consider before choosing where I apply to? My real home is in Seattle, but I am currently working Chattanooga, TN, where I went to school. So I guess my plan is to apply to schools for a 2018 start, which is after my first year of experience, in either CCU or MICU, in addition to getting my CCRN, BSN, PALS. If I don't get in, then I think I will go into travel nursing for a year, then reapply. Sorry for all the questions, I'm sure you're BUSY, but I just want to be very proactive :) Thanks Aisha!!

From what I have found in my own research, GPA during nursing school and prereqs is a HUGE factor in even getting accepted. My pharmacology instructor told me that the school he was on the applicant review board at required at least a 3.5 GPA. However, usually because of the competition they didnt even look at anything less than a 3.8!! That is in Houston though, Im not sure how it is everywhere else.
@AishaCRNA
@AishaCRNA 7 жыл бұрын
I will say that times are changing and yes you would like to have the highest GPA possible, but I and many of my classmates are proof that well rounded individuals with great experiences- are what top schools are looking for. I got in with a 3.44 GPA, and I know of many people with lower GPAs that got in the same year as I did at many other schools in the country. What is difficult about this whole process is not letting "research" or things that you hear via word of mouth dictate how you proceed with this process.
@AishaCRNA
@AishaCRNA 7 жыл бұрын
If I listened to what people on review boards and senior nurses, I would have never applied... I will continue to believe that the GPA is a number and that it cannot tell you all about an applicant.

Also, I already have BSN degree but taken outside USA. How long did you study under a crna program and how much is the tuition fee for all the years of studying. Thank you for your answer 🙂

Thank you for the advise! When you work in the icu, did you work at lvl 1 trauma center hospital in your region?
@AishaCRNA
@AishaCRNA 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, my hospital was. BUT I didn't work in trauma. And to be honest, I had a pretty good probability of working at one since the five total that are in VA, were relatively close to either where I grew up, went to school, or a few hrs away. My best advice would be to focus on the actual experience that a unit will give you!

Do you have a recommendation doing the CCRN first or the GRE first? Thanks.
@AishaCRNA
@AishaCRNA 7 жыл бұрын
I don't. However, I would say that if you have just taken sometime of ICU classes or something, go ahead and start studying for your CCRN. Otherwise, I don't think it matters too much. Do what you are comfortable with. If you feel like you will need a lot of time to review older GRE material, start to study that one first.

I am not 100% sure of this answer as I have never had to experience this. I believe what you put on your resume will speak volumes. The schools want to see that you have taken care of critically ill patients and have had to titrate, and handle different situations. My advice would be contact a school in which you are interested and ask.

hi, Im an RN (ADN) but have a bachelors in a previous science degree. Lets say I plan to become a CRNA or NP in future, what is the fastest/most efficient route? do u think I should do the RN-MSN program and then move on to CRNA? or should I just get a BSN and not bother with the MSN portion? Im so much in a dillema and dont want to waste time . Thanks
@AishaCRNA
@AishaCRNA 7 жыл бұрын
I completely understand where you are coming from... There are some schools that just require a Bachelor's but not many. I would look for those. If I was in your shoes, and couldnt find a school that would accept my Bachelor's of Science, I would go the RN-MSN route... because they are probably the same amount of time- and you would come out with a higher degree.
