Chris, you'll be proud of me; at work, in the employee parking lot I started backing into the parking spot because, well, you can take the boy out of HI, but you can't take the HI out of the boy. Well, before long, I start noticing all these other cars and trucks are backing into their parking stalls as well, lol. So there ya go, spreading aloha one parking stall at a time. 🤙

Aloha Chris! As frequent visitors to the island, we have definitely noticed the reverse parking, the loud music, and loud mufflers. We haven’t noticed too many people rushing. Usually more laid back which is great because then we end up remembering to take our time and enjoy the nice pace of things. Mahalo for sharing your experiences and perspective all the time. My mom told me that Hawai’i has the most Reverse parked cars. Not sure what study she saw but it made me laugh to think someone tracked that and we won😂

Loud Music: "I get it I was 16 once" that cracked me up. Unfortunately loud music is a problem in a lot of places, both from cars and also because portable speakers have become so much better. People everywhere assume everyone wants to hear their music. We don't, especially when the lyrics are inappropriate and there is children around.

I’m a long haul trucker, most of us truckers gets used to reverse backings because we back our trucks most of the time. So when we drive our personal cars and small trucks we usually backing in to the stalls.

Loud Music is also done by some elderly! I once saw one parking in Safeway playing an 80's love song with max volume which actually brought a smile in my face!

Slowing down to check if "Wait, is that my Auntie?" was SO ACCURATE, you got me wheezing with laughter!! OMG, if you got more "strange things" Hawaii locals do, bring it on! Thanks for the upload!

On behalf of the loud music drivers I'd like to say - it's a great feeling to be rocking out to music as the wind is hitting you. Some people do it to look cool, I do it in the hope that the ppl who hear my music can enjoy it alongside me (but I'll lower it some as I approach a stoplight). When it rattles the car plastic though, that is truly when it has gone too far

You got a good point at the end of the video where you basically said at the end of the day we get along because we're stuck on the island. I think it's all because our immigrant forefathers needed to get along not only among themselves but the with Hawaiians and the haoles who came before them. That attitude and their individual cultures became assimilated with the Hawaiian culture and that is what we have today. I don't live there anymore but Hawaii is still my home state, and Molokai is still my home island. 😂

Interesting thoughts, as always. I have always suspected that loud music is a territorial claim - ‘cause we have that here in the 48, too. I also love noticing language differences. You reverse park into a stall; where I live, we back into a space. And it’s a statement of ability, who can back better.

Some people are just obsessed with competition and winning. If they can get two cars ahead of you and arrive 30 seconds before you, then THEY WON My attitude is Relax, [ not everything is a competition ].

Thank you for sharing you thoughts. Hawaii is still for me paradise since I live in cold Chicago, Illinois. The saving grace about be here is that during the warmer summer I only have 4 blocks over yo the Lake Michigan beach area.

I lived in New York City for ten years, Hawaii people are super slow at everything and that’s ok, but it’s something I noticed… lol.

Having lived in more than a few major US cities, I can tell you that the loud muffler/"music for all mankind" thing is pretty nationwide. We were raised with Aloha Spirit driving and I worry that there might be too much mainland/malahini influence on our roads. (Too Fast & Too Furious?) Always happy when I get a shaka for letting someone over or just to show that Spirit. 🤙🏼The saddest thing when candidates are sign waving is when they are all by themselves on the corner. 😕And yes, kama‘aina who try to rush are just really bad at it and endangering others. Chris! For a young guy, you have an old soul! LOL! I subscribed because I love hearing about...us! You're like the old time Hawaii comedians that make fun/note of Hawaii stuff, but it's kind of true! A couple of things personally....I ALWAYS reverse park because to me, it's harder to reverse out because sometimes it looks clear, but people behind driving by just whiz past, then you have to jam your brakes, and they honk at YOU! Or, people who walk behind your car, seeing you are reversing, but walk anyway. Most newer cars since 2015 have reverse cameras that make it easy to reverse perfectly and quickly into a stall. Nowadays, I only look back briefly, then use the camera to finish. As for the loud music/mufflers....WHY? Because for the younger generation, it's all about, "LOOK AT ME!" That's why they also love tik-tok and Instagram. Look at ME! LIKE me! Look at what I had for dinner! Who the f___ cares? Agree with sign-wavers. Think about it for a second. Their GOAL is to take your eyes off the road and look at the sign! Dangerous! And yes, the lane weavers? I love it when they cut me off, then we get stuck at the same light and I'm right behind! Sometimes, I stick my hand out and wave!

I just got home from a week’s vacation in Kailua. I lived there a little more than 20 years ago and try to visit often. However, this was my first trip since 2018 and I really noticed the loud music and the mufflers, even very late at night! I was surprised as I just didn’t remember that as happening so often in the past.

The reverse parking thing is so funny. I drive an older car (no back up camera) and still reverse park on the mainland when I can. People are always so amused/impressed here.

Moved to Oahu from SoCal about two years ago. The sign waiving completely threw me off, but I found it charming after a while - another one of those "only in Hawaii" moments my wife and I laugh about.

Man I love reverse parking! But I will admit if there are other cars around I will refrain from doing it.. No need to inconvenience others. However something about it is so satisfying when you get it perfect on the first try

For the loud mopeds, I always grew up thinking that was for other drivers to hear you better if they can't see.

Having a big SUV (or any vehicle in HI) makes more sense to reverse park especially since Hawai’i parking stalls are hella small. It’s harder trying to get out of small parking spaces with a big vehicle and our small parking spaces.

Always enjoy the insights you provide. Reverse parking makes sense to me for trucks or large cars in straight stalls. Much easier to pull back out especially if it's a small parking lot. It's the ones that reverse park in angled stalls that has me shaking my head. I've always believed that 90% of the time, the loudness of the car stereo is inversely related to the value of the car it is found in.

as someone who taught crash avoidance years ago, and who's testified in car accident cases, I can assure you, there were studies done many years ago showing that backing into spaces absolutely reduces accidents in parking lots. So you "may not believe it" but it's true.

haha funny you should mention the reverse parking thing. I do it only because I figure do all the hard work now vs later when I have to leave LOL especially when you have a larger car or truck. I used to drive a dodge ram truck and it's hard and sometimes dangerous to reverse out because I can't see people walking behind me or if a car is coming. But yea your insights kinda on point and makes me laugh.

I started watching the video earlier today before having an errand and finished watching after I got home. I grew up in Kailua and took the drive over the tunnels through high school, college, and adult years. Moving out to Leeward and commuting to and from Honolulu daily, later driving Wahiawa daily, the commute travel over the Pali, to the Leeward, Central and Windward sides are slightly different for those over time, weather, and other conditions that sometimes, taking it for granted might be mistake. When one is young, confidence is always strong, but knowledge and experience doesn't always sit hand in hand. Depending on the rain intensity/duration and road design, it makes a difference and not all drivers are cognitive of their vehicle's limitations/conditions. Parts of H1 going westbound, not all parts of the road handle drainage well. There are times being in the fast lane westbound in heavy rain in rush hour traffic, I remember several times vehicles town bound in the fast lane splash so much water rushing that it cascades onto the windshield of the westbound vehicle in the fast lane obscuring visibility even with the wipers going at maximum speed. A speeding driver westbound middle lane cutting over to the fast lane or last-minute hard braking of the car in front, could make the driver with visibility blurred from the traffic on opposite side at risk. There are parts past Waipahu on H1 where drainage of the freeway is poor and crosses and pools in the fast and slow lanes with water running in the middle. Speeding cars in the fast lane can hydroplane or killed their engine from pooling runoff. In the dark, it might get worse. Even in town with heavy areas of Kakaako and Mapunapuna closer to Nimitz, heavy rains, poor drainage there are flooded streets that can trap cars. If I recall, it wasn't that long ago, even the H1 by the Pali offramp flooded due to poor drainage. Today, I drove, and it was not raining, but lots & lots of slow drivers, so I can excuse slow driving in rain as safety, but when its sunny & dry, I must ask myself why are they driving this way? Is there a mechanical issue (which I must question why being on the freeway at driving under forty is a smart move) or is there something unsafe to be in front or on the side of such a driver. One more thing, loud music, I just thank the stars above that I'm not in the vehicle and subjected to that noise for the next 20+ years. My retiree eardrums are so appreciative that I never did that in my younger days and when I did have the music cranked up a tad louder, my windows were closed, so the other drivers didn't hear me warbling to the latest like song.

no be so sensitive, 99% of the time I reverse parking, moa bettah, no mattah what people say. at the age of 42, I still bump my music. keeps me awake. everyone is different...cant expect everyone to have the same likes and interests

Can relate to everything you said especially sign waving. I burst out laughing - I do look to see who is waving and holding signs to see if I know them.

Just an FYI, some of the loud mufflers on mopeds and motorcycles are for safety reasons. Cars do not pay attention to the mopeds or motorcycles unless they make noise. I had a stock motorcycle and I would have to dodge a lot of cars because they don't know you are next to them.

I can handle the loud music from the cars - it's the people (almost always tourists) blasting loud music on the trails, or one guy who was blasting it from his phone on speaker while waiting in line to pay for fuel.

I was born in Hawaii but have lived in Georgia a long time. Everything you mentioned is all too common here as well. Well, except for the tolerant friendliness. Irritable intolerance is far too easy to find here.

Parking for the quick getaway! One funny thing, on the mainland, designs on T-shirts like you get one picture of Budman or Spuds McKenzie or whatevahs, the design is on the front but in Hawaii, the design is on the back.

Reverse parking is wildly popular in NW Pennsylvania also. All of the lined parking spaces in my city's downtown area are set up to force reverse parking so everyone downtown gets to sit and watch while someone takes 3 or 4 attempts to get it right 😂😂😂

My wife and I laughed our way through this video! I'd add one on the streets you left off- pickup trucks modded to the point of losing functionality, especially wheel bases too high or low. Of course they've modded the mufflers too...

The first to wave signs was Charles Campbell in perhaps 1968. I wanna say he waved signs next to Like Like hwy near the Kam Shopping Center. He was a high school teacher, I wanna say Campbell HS, but maybe Leilehua. He was African American and the sign waving was his way of breaking the barrier and get noticed. It worked so others followed.

Hello In my opinion, the volume should be moderate so that you can hear the melody as well as the booming base notes. If the volume is too loud, all you hear is the percussion part containing the base notes

Reverse parking is a thing here due to generally poor civil engineering: very few parking lots are the much safer diagonal-in model. Not sure why civil engineers are so afraid of the diagonal-in design. When you have to park at a 90 degree angle as in most Hawaii parking lots, reverse in IS much safer upon departure. Bad reverse-in parking skills is another ball of wax! 😆

Japan over 95% of the time backs into a stall when parking. Maybe that is where that comes from. As for loud music and cars, that is pretty universal to a younger population and not just Hawaii. As for driving slow or fast, if you do the math on a drive of 10 to 15 miles, a 5 mph to 10 speed difference is not even a minute of time. As a Hawaii local since the 50's what I find funny about what we do, is think driving from Kailua to town is a long distance. People act like it is an incredible distance to go from the windward side to town a grand total of about 13 to 15 miles.

Maybe the reason for the reverse park is because Hawaii parking spaces are pretty tight, and parking garages / lanes are pretty tight as well. Trying to back out of parking stalls can be challenging because of this.

Lots of good things too people do here no one else does (in US culture anyway) like shoes off at the door and you leave them outside. I've been to a few no shoes homes on the mainland, but they always keep shoes inside!? Also, gifts. You never come empty handed. Always bring a little gift, bring neighbors gifts, share food etc... So many good things too!

I went to elementary school in Hawaii. Kids wear slippas to school is cool but in the mainland you gotta wear shoes.

Loud mopeds are usually because people put cheap gas instead of Premium. You can tell the difference

Hi! Thank you and I enjoy your videos! I’m Okinawan (born and raised there), and I lived in Oahu for about 5 years during my 20s. One theory on reverse parking: in Japan we pretty much reverse park, everywhere. And in Hawaii there are lots of Japanese immigrants and students. So this might be why and the locals started the same thing? Idk. But good or bad I love Hawaii and our beautiful relationship(Hawaii and Okinawa)!

- Reverse parking isn't practical when you need to load stuff into your trunk. So if traffic is low enough, go in front first. - The loud Mopeds issue has to do with them being so under powered, people try to get ever ounce of horsepower out of them by installing low restriction muffler systems; sad to say, they make a lot of noise, in spite of minimally improving performance. - The loud music issue is a personality problem; by lacking acknowledgement in life, they crave any attention they can get. The boomy stereos are a cry for attention. - Driving slow in the rain is "Hawaiian snow". I think one of the largest problem is the design of the roads. They are so twisty and turn-filled, rain just complicates navigating them. - Sign-waving is cost effective and safe. As much time as Hawaii residents spend in their vehicles, it's a cheap way to get attention and someone's name out there to the public. Plus Hawaii is a fairly safe place to do this type of campaigning. - Rushing when driving is attributed to the conflicting personality issues with being laid back (on Hawaiian-time), yet having to face the reality of being on-time. Opposing viewpoints, although island residents duel against these two factors everyday. GREAT OBSERVATIONS!

bruh I work at the Lowes here in Maui and people reverse into spots even when they need to be parked the opposite way to load stuff into their trunk of their car that they’re getting at the store, so when they get their stuff they have to pull out and park the other way before loading up.

I like my music loud because I like to feel it. I like the windows down because there’s more air for the speakers to move around and it gives the bass a richer sound. Although with my car you don’t hear anything rattling and I’m assuming that because of the way the speakers are setup / tuned, there’s significantly less sound leakage compared with most people who put in aftermarket subs

Hi Chris, can you please explain gas station etiquette in Hawaii? I noticed this at Costco mostly, but if the person at the front pump finishes refueling but there's still a person at the back pump, the next person in line does not pull around to the front pump. They wait until both cars have cleared before everyone advances to their respective pumps. Is this out of extreme politeness?

The moped exshast systems are loud but slow because we can upgrade the carbaurators and the drive gear but for it to qualify as "not a motorcycle" It must stay under 2horsepower yet we have to modify them to get them to get them to keep up to the speed of traffic or at least we try to, there always be bad examples and a large portion of mopeds are stolen and resold too and moped that are not maintained also are "all noise, no go" too

I always thought reversing in a parking lot in Hawaii makes your better prepared for tsunami reasons, or emergencies in case you need to leave quickly. I reverse park pretty quickly so it doesn’t take me too long.

I was leaving Costco once and a woman was backing out of a stall. I stopped to let her out and never forgot her. She rolled down her window, a manual by the way, and gave me a shaka!! She has no idea how she inspired me that day. I use to just shaka from inside my car. But now I roll down my window. If no can cause raining, I just hope they see it. But yah, I always thank ppl that let me cut in. 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼 And unless get one car behind me, I always back into a stall. Cause ppl walking by don’t stop when they see you backing up to get out and I don’t want anybody suing me!! I get that problem at Windward mall, and it’s slanted parking. Of course it only gets busy when I’m backing out…lol

I reverse park sometimes, because of obstacles and limited area, it's easier to reverse into the parking spot.

Japanese are famous for reverse park but it might be East Asian thing. Im Asian and reverse park all time b/c i’m so short so I have a ton of blind spots. So much safer and yes quicker than forward park

These 5 things are actually, in my experience, universal, multicultural.

The biggest issue is people dont use their blinker because locals think its uncool to use the blinker when turning right or left. In acual reality it's a great way for better communication for people/cars to flow better and make decisions more efficiently and also it's much safer to use your blinker so the other people/cars know what you are gonna do. It would cause less accidents. It's no wonder Hawaii has a problem with communication and car accidents and killing people lately.

Having been on the East side of Big Island for almost a year, I find drivers here to be safe and efficient for the most part. One huge difference between here and Georgia where I moved from is the attitude. Drivers inHawaii are interested in what’s best for everyone on the road. Georgians will come to cross streets fast and stop short, take forever to come off a light, ride in your blind spot for miles, come across three lanes suddenly to take their exit, pull in front of you and slam on their brakes to make a right turn after full stop on highway, roll down their window and brandish a gun. They are constantly pissed off and take it out on other drivers regularly which brings traffic to a complete grind for no reason. I saw a lot of twisted metal there and I don’t miss it

people that smoke should roll up their windows too, irritating when people smoking and everybody around them cannot enjoy the fresh air. I have no problem with people smoking, but if they like smoke, they should roll up their windows and enjoy their smoke.

in Asia, mophead bike mufflers are loud so other traffic...aka cars. .. can hear you because many car drivers aren't looking out for mophead bikes.

Not only HAWAII get these problems, I now live in Holland and and it's 100 time worse straight across the board over here, so to say enjoy the island life. BTW: I'm Cali boy born and raised, mom and pops are from the islands, but I stay missing the islands BIG TIME, MAHALO.

Even up here in the mainland, you can almost tell it is a local with parking in reverse. The loud music is also here and feel sorry for them as their hearing will be damaged. I think with mopeds it's the small stroke engines leading to the noise. Bikers love the loud rumble. When it rains up here, people still drive fast and reckless. I usually slow down some as I've seen too many accidents. And everybody is in a rush up here.

The loud muffler can fade away. It's amazing that these young adults/teens think they're so smart, smarter than an automobile engineer to think that if they put a less restrictive muffler, they'll go faster. The engineers go to school for a very long time to figure out all what goes into an engine and the computer that regulates everything in that engine. Our young people think they're pure geniuses by tinkering with these highly computerized engines to get maybe 5 more horsepower but in the long term ruining the engine. That's why I never buy a used car in "souped up" condition bc you know that engine has been raced and abused. All stock for me. Don't get me started on cold air in takes...

I recently moved to Oahu, and man... the loud mufflers. And I just hopped over to Kaua'i for a few days and it's the same there. I knew about this from previous trips, but don't get the appeal. Still... this place is amazing. Lucky we live Hawai'i.

The parking issue most likely came from Japan where everyone reverses in, and does it the first time.

this video is the first to make me jealous my family and I were priced out of Hawaii. The Hawaiian government is foolish and greedy only allowing a new Waterpark for surf to be built when we literally have a surplus of beaches around us. Opportunity for affordable housing is possible but every chance there is Hawaii would rather build something that is meaningless. I'm starting to realize something. Hawaii is a place I use to love. It's a fake kine version of what it once was.

In LA a bunch of places won't let you reverse Park you can get a ticket. They love giving tickets there lol
