Spade bits are brutal. They are a must from time to time but nothing is better than a mortising bit.

Great job with all of this dude... I'm very glad to see there are humble creators out there... It's never fun when stuff fail, but in the end I'd say it was a good thing that you caught the weakness "in time", might feel like the wrong thing to say, but it could have been worse... Plus that you seem like the kind of person who learns from his mistakes and there is a lot of strength in being able to admit when stuff goes wrong... It means that you can grow as a person... Sorry for rambling about, but it made me happy to see and I learn a lot from you so, keep up the good work and thank you for your service!

I've watched countless hours of guitar making videos. I'm just at the fantasizing phase of making a guitar myself. Everything I watch this type of video, I've got this little anxiety that at any moment the building can just completely fuck up what he's doing. So far all the videos I've seen nothing ever happens. Tonight, while a little drunk on Tequilla, I'm watching your video and the worst fucking thing that can ever happen, happened. I screamed at my screen in terror NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Serious, I totally felt your pain as if it was mine. From your narration, you took it much better than I think I would've. This gave me the same feeling when I've seen the Exorcist the first time. This creepy feeling of terror. Well played film maker, well played.

I've watched a good view guitar making videos now on YT and gotta say these here are among the greatest! great tunes, commentary and filmaking and also the investigation into why the headstock split and the lesson learnt from that was very educational.

5:06 I made myself one of those routing jigs. It was well worth the trouble! I built myself a 12" and a 9.5" radius saddle. Can't remember where I found the plans, but I see you have a small router and this would work GREAT.

I LOVE your attitude here - setback, sure, but adapt and overcome! Love the custom drill bit and neck clamp on the bench - excellent ideas. Digging your work and loving these videos - nicely done! BTW, if you want to use that drill bit to do this work, go right ahead! You clearly understand the approach and limitations, so press on! ;)

Pro tip. A 45° router bit set at 3/8 plate to end will give you a great neck angle after you round off the edges. It's much easier than the rasping and manual sanding.
@fanbladeinstruments
@fanbladeinstruments 2 жыл бұрын
I prefer not to use routers for anything where there is a safer alternative. Truss rod slots, occasional rounding of edges if I'm in a hurry, but the noise and the mess and the potential for mangled guitars/fingers makes me want to aviod them as much as possible.

Would you consider doing a video on how you build some of your home made hand tools. I am especially interested in your radius sanding block and how it was made. Thank you for showing your mistakes and how to deal with them. And thank you for all the little tips.

Hi, yes I do have a video where I built a radius sanding block: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eJmkjJudmeDLZHU.html I'm actually planning a series on making my own pickups, I'm effectively starting from scratch so the first episode will be building a winder and a super cheap vacuum chamber for epoxy potting. Also a lot of pickup theory and I'm sure there'll be plenty of mistakes we can all learn from😉 Glad you are enjoying the channel, Cheers.

Your idea of the radius jig is very nice, I think I can 'take' it and make some improvement to adapt on my working method! That deserves a like! Anyway by the vid, I don't know what kind of tuners you want to put on, but probably you have 2 holes (the B and the G or the E and the C depend if you added a treble or a bass string) too much close to the outline of the heasdstock curves

Thanks, yes, take the idea and do good things. The machineheads on this one are a bit weird, they looked smaller in the photos but when they arrived they were massive. Not my preferred ones (gotoh are my go-to), but I've got them and may as well use them. Cheers

I talked to a lot of bass players and most of them say it doesn't matter if the fingerboard is radiused or flat... So I made one with a flat fingerboard and it sold in 3 days.

Enjoying this series, liked and subbed.... PS I also see some luthiers will use a long plane (no. 5 or even 6) to do some ot the radius shaping, before going to the sanding phase. Should cut down on SOME of that sanding time! Have you ever tried this?
@timbeaton5045
@timbeaton5045 3 жыл бұрын
Also, thinking about the drilling catastrophe...could it also be because the blade was flat, so it was cutting only on two opposite sides of the joint at any one time. i.e a circular drill bit, or even a forstner bit might have stressed the join less? But on the other hand, if it showed up the fault with the old finish on the wood, lessening the strength of the glue join, then maybe it was a valuable lesson, in the end? Hopefully I can learn from your mistakes, too!

Shame about the neck mishap after all that graft with the radius block but them there spade bits are dangerously crap with hardwood if you look back 7:13 the problem looks like the shaft flexing & warping combine that with a blunt bit the smoke coming from your work piece was the warning but hey shit happens it is better for it to happen to the wood and not yourself Get yourself some brad point bits

Why not cut off the headstock where the scarf joint was and just make a new headstock to glue on
