What food do they eat in Sweden? And is Swedish food good or bad? What are some of the most weird foods people eat in Sweden? And what are some of the Swedish foods I've tried and loved since moving to Sweden. These are some of the questions we'll be answering in today's video, all about, you guessed it, FOOD! You guys have been asking me to talk about food for a minute, so today I'm finally giving the people what they want and digging into some of the Swedish foods I've learned, tried and loved since I ended up moving here a couple of years ago.
Follow me on social media:

5 Swedish Foods I've tried and loved:
1. Köttfärssås (or kebab for that matter) on a pizza - okay, I get why this might offend the italians out there, but I have to say, most of the Swedish pizza combinations are actually pretty good
2. Rödbetssallad - beetrood salad, Swedish style is to die for! I know it sounds fairly underwhelming, I mean, what can you really do with a salad? But go and buy a Rydbergs Rödbetssallad and then come back to me!
3. Crisps... with dipp! The Swedish dips you can buy are so varied and interesting. And they really make the difference, regardless which crisps you fancy!
4. Sill - or pickled herring, to my non-Swedish viewers! Its a common dish during Swedish högtider (like Midsommer and Christmas) and I challenge you to try it before you judge it. You're guaranteed to be surpised!!
5. Swedish pies - sure, England is famous for its pies, but Sweden take it to a whole new level. And I'm totally here for it!

I used to loathe rödbetssallad as a child. But as an adult it is one of my favourite. A fun story about it is actually when my sister went to study japanese in Japan for a few months. She lived in a kind of dormitory with other international students and one evening they had a world food event where each group of students cooked some representative food from their country and then they all tasted eachother's dishes. My sister and a couple of other swedes, made, among other things, rödbetssallad. She said it was a super hit among all international students as well as the japanese teachers. So for any foreigners in sweden, I definitely recommend trying it.

I don't trust the japanese when it comes to food. One time I stayed in a hotel. That weekend they served japanese breakfast. The dining room and foaje smelled like rotten eggs every morning. I don't like rödbetssallad but I always mistake it for sillsallad.

Definately! With fresh bleak roe on top! Råraka with bleak roe, finely chopped red onion, gräddfil, chives and a cold beer plus a shot of Akvavit! Freshly grilled Char from the Scandic mountains is fantastic! Kantarelltoast with heaps of butter fried chantrelles and minced onions and herbs! Real Renskav or Souvas, from Swedish Sami Caribou! Roast roe deer filet with juniper and rosemary, gravy, lingonberries and ovenroasted parsnips, celeriac and turnips and almond potatoes! Toast Pelle Jansson or Gubbröra! Swedish braied brisket with salted sidfläsk (like porkbelly) and springs first greens! Älgfärsbullar from falls freshly minced Moose with fried porcini (Karl Johan Svamp)! Swedish flounder fried two minutes each side in butter, served with fresh stringbeans or peas, a handful of capers in the pan before the butter dresses them and the new potatoes, and a knob of either freshly grated horseradish or anchovy butter (sardellsmör) and a green salad is one of summers absolute delights! Swedish yellow split pea soup cooked slow with a knuckle of pork, and good coarse sour mustard, plus the Swedish pancakes or plättar with jam and a dollop of whipcream that go with the thursday evening dish is really good hone made fare. A classic Swedish steak Tartare or kroppkakor (knedely in Czech or soft porkfilled potatodumplings with browned butter and lingonberries, fresh fried strömming with mash, parsley and lemon, Wallenbergare made from soft minced veal, the list of tasty Swedish food is decent. I really wonder where the heck this guy goes out to dinner, and who cooks at the dinnerparties he’s been to?! Swedish pies besides Västerbotten worth mentioning are all sweet, not savory. Gooseberry, rhubarb and strawberry, etc. Fast food? That would be pyttipanna with HP sauce, parsley and a fried egg or raw yolk, a better falafel with muhammara and tahinisauce (now a Swedish staple) and Swedish Ostbågar/Cheez Doodles are way better than American ones or most sad potato chips. This was the strangest video he’s done by far.. 😳 🤭

I don't really like pineapple on pizza, but banana and curry is great. Last time in Sweden I had one with ham, "oxfilé", banana and bearnaise. Absolutely smashingly great. Try it before you judge. Italians get 99/100 right when it comes to food, but for some strange reason have too little imagination for even trying banana on pizza.

Thank you, I really enjoyed your video (but I hate rödbetssallad :)) One thing that I think is typically Swedish is our "Pytt i panna" You have something similar in the UK called hash but it's far from the same. I'm frying boiled potatoes (from "yesterday") in small squares and put in chopped onions, some left-over beef and bits of some smoked sausages, salt & pepper and a bunch of parsley on top. To go with it I choose pickled beet roots! and a fried sunny-side-up egg. If you have some left over gravy just stir it in (or make a quick one with some cream and soy sauce), then you get creamy Pytt. Some restaurants in Sweden have their own Pytt i panna as a signature dish - one in Göteborg but I forgot the restaurants name.

You should try "kolbulle." It's an old dish "kolare" (translated to coalers maybe?) and lumberjacks used to make in the forests. It's basically a pancake with diced pork in it. My guess is that an Ikea near you sell pickled herring around Christmas, Easter or Midsummer (end of June). They are sold in glass jars that don’t need to be in refrigirator until opened, so they’re easily stored and may be found at the end of the store where you buy cheap hot dogs (if the layout is the same as here in Sweden - I hope it is!).

Quite a reasonable list. And when it comes to chips/dip combos i really like the holiday dip for salt and vinegar chips. I get all happy eating those chips, we didn't have salt and vinegar chips here until some time in the 90s, so everytime we went abroad i ate them to the extent it felt like my mouth was falling apart. And regarding the topic of our pizzas (And also related to rödbetssallad), i dont know about other cities, but where i live some of the pizza places do "Christmas pizza", and it seems they like to outdo eachother with combining pizza with swedish christmas food in the most disgusting way possible. Saw one on a menu with christmas ham, rödkål and rödbetssallad and meatballs. Too much, too wierd.

Tropicana pizza (the name of the pineapple + bana + curry powder variety) is a staple and surprisingly nice. I'm just a (very tiny) bit surprised you didn't like this as it contains CURRY! Also, the nearest thing to Swedish pies in the uk is the quiche, although they are generally taller than the pies in Sweden and contains more dough and less filling (and are not as tasty). I also do buy Rödbetssallad in the UK. You need to know where to look for it, though.

My dad used to work for several major food corporations - during the late 70's and most of the 80's he was the local manager for CPC in Simrishamn, who among many other products made Winborgs pickled herring. Dad helped up the quality and even helped them develop a couple of recipes (he'd also been on the product development team that created Felix bruna bönor and instant mashed potatoes - he also brought to Sweden quick-open cans from Germany, the ones everyone use now) and for most of the 80's Winborgs pickled herring was considered the best in Sweden. Unfortunately that's a long time ago, and they kind of reverted on quality after CPC got gutted by competitors - Winborgs still exists, but they mainly just make stuff like vinegar.

Nice to hear you like pickled herring. Many foreigners do after (reluctantly) trying it. The beginners version is the senapssill (mustard herring): pickled herring dressed with a mix of equal parts sweet Swedish mustard and the sauce normally eaten with gravlaks. Kids usually don't like pickled herring, and senapssill tends to be the first one they eat. It was for me. I'm a traditionalist, so no curry or garlic herring for me. My favourites are plain pickled herring made with carrots, onions and the sweet brine (1 part 12% vinegar, 2 parts sugar, 3 parts water) and the matjessill ("virgin herring"): heavily spiced and eaten with gräddfil/sour cream.

i just have to say that beetroot salad is something you can get at any holiday since we swedes are not really creative when it comes to holiday foods. Herring, beetroot salad, salmon, meatballs, snaps, nubbe, knäckebröd, and prinskorv, are the staples for our dinner tables at the big holidays like Easter, Christmas, and Midsummers eve (pretty big holiday in sweden) to mention a few. if you put these items on the table you will have a successful holiday gathering, and if you have these items front and center you can add basically any type of food and get away with it. had a friend who had a separate buffet table where they had tacos at christmas, and another friend had a pizza table at midsummer, but neither the pizza or the tacos where eaten more than the "original" food. on the topic of pickled herring, you said you liked the curry one, that was the only herring i could stand when i was younger, especially after christmas dinner at my uncle where they had home made apple and curry pickled herring. i was basically floored by how amazing it tasted

@@JustaBritAbroad Perhaps you can make a "Swedish cheeses" video some time in the future. About the ordinary day to day "breakfast cheeses" like Gräddost, Hushåll, Greve, Präst and Herrgård, to Kryddost that you mainly have for midsummer and crayfish parties, to the king of Swedish cheeses, Västerbotten. Whenever there is some offer in the supermarket I hoard it, grate it, freeze it, it´s a bit expensive for my taste, it just lifts the taste of so many dishes. Italians might find it sacrilegious, but I often use it instead of parmesan on pasta or risotto (risotto with "kantareller" and västerbottenost... that´s so good). Have you tried "mesost" btw? I really don´t like it, but it´s very Scandinavian. It´s even more common in Norway (called "brunost" or "brown cheese"), even if it has existed in Sweden for hundred of years too, it really is an aquired taste. But it´s one of those things you should try if you haven´t. (Be aware to mention it´s Norwegian origin, because otherwise you will have a ton of insulted Norwegians in the comment section, they´re very... protective... and hate when something Norwegian (like the cheese slicer!) is called Swedish.

The pizza thing. Thats a strength of the Swedish culture, through history and now. Swedes are, perhaps paradoxical for someone who only sees our shy side, very open to ideas from the outside. Our industry builds on collecting knowledge from all over the world, the famous Swedish pop music is seldom very Swedish, it's imported genres and sentiments. There is always a way to make things in a better way. And until we can agree on the perfect pizza, let's throw anything on them that is good warm. Gräddfil and sour cream actually aren't exactly the same, but they are the closest cousins, you're right🤗but glad that you enjoyed the video and that we share the love for rödbetssallad - so good!!

The Swedish paj is like the British quiche though 😊 Hi from a Swede living in the U.K. since 1998 👋🏼

true, good point! which is another funny one, as I never really ate quiche in england either, always thought it was a bit dull. should give it a new shot now though, because I'm sure I'd love it! what part of the UK are you in by the way? and greetings!!

@@JustaBritAbroad I’m in north east Lincolnshire since 15 years but spent my first seven in north Staffordshire. Seems an odd place to en up as most Swedes comes to London) but I had a friend in Sheffield who I stayed with for the first three months here and the rest is, as they say, history. I don’t know what it is but a piece of quiche can feel quite stodgy compared to a paj. Swedes certainly have more imagination when it comes to what to put in them (quite like pizzas!). Although, Tesco have a nice goats cheese and roasted pepper one. But who wants a soggy ham and cheese quiche when you can have Västerbottenpaj? 😊 Sending warm greetings your way too!

@ Sorry, I am a little confused. Sheffield is in fact in South Yorkshire. What is the connection with Staffordshire?

@@vulc1 I never actually considered myself *living* in Sheffield. I was a guest at a friend’s house for three months.
