I don’t know why people tend to have double standards with the “not all about speed” argument. With cars like the AE86 people give that response to why it doesn’t matter that it’s slow but with cars like the BRZ people act like the car needed to be faster and that “not all about speed” doesn’t apply to that car for some reason.

Man you'd go crazy if you saw my 86 in the early 2010's. Red panda GTS hatch, all stock, interior red panels all clean, no cracks on dash, fully functional AC. That was my first car, my favorite car. Unfortunately around 2013 I went through some rough financial times and had no choice but to sell it... I sold it for $5500. Shoot me. Today I make decent money, I have a GT86 to daily and a custom built turbo MRS (10s car) for fun. I've driven s2000s, STIs, every gen MR2, Corvettes, you name it. To this day nothing compares, I would give anything to be in my old 86 banging gears with the TVIS activated engine screaming feeling like a bat out of hell as a prius gently passes me.

Dang man that was a perfect car! Theres no other car that’s so fun but also so slow😂. I’ve also got a turbo 1zz MRS. It’s another amazing car but it not even close to the 86 for me.

The worst part is, The AE86 isn't made for American road. It's made for Japanese road that were narrow and small. It's considered "slow-ass" In America because American road is too damn big and just long straight without end. Those big n wide road is only unique in America. It's also the case with many JDM like Subaru WRX, Miata, GT86/BRZ, and other 1600cc-2000cc Japanese cars. Those cars were considered slow in USA without mods, it's not in Japan. But those cars handle very good in those japanese road because it has proper balance and it can go way faster than traffic while still easy to control since it's not too powerful. Too powerful car that went above 200hp is quite hard to control in Japanese road.

My biggest complaint about my ae86 Everyone in my life wants me to sell it. Ive had this car for nearly 20 years. Bought my GTS for just over 2 grand (and that was "oh man, theyre starting to get expensive". damn drift tax). Now it seems theyre pushing 20-30~ in good condition. My fiance / family / friends / etc insist all the time oh man, sell it- you can make so much on it. Why dont you sell it. Think of what you could do with all that money. Since VR2 for PS5 came out, my desire to jump through the hoops to own a real hatchback have practically disappeared. I used to own the SR5 coupe and I stripped it down to nothing but a drivers seat and seatbelt. It weighed 1750. On the backroads of N.C. nothing could take low speed corners better than I could. Corners over 60mph however, it could be beaten by anyone with a little courage. However, the memories of racing I have in it , with eurobeat blasting and the feeling of being in a special world, was priceless. I lived the dream for years. After the 86 coupe snapped its camshaft, I got a 2nd gen Rx7 and continued. Initial D put me on the path sure, but drifting wasnt in my cards as none of my cars had limited slip. Online in VR however, I could get the cars balance right where I wanted it. Its really hard to justify putting the money and effort and tuning into the real thing. If I got a hydraulic seat that moves, I think the VR would be close enough to the real thing. VR without the moving seat is still immersive. At 42 years old, the fun factor is far more important than speed and bragging rights. You can see why Bunta drove the way he did. I mean, otherwise life is just too boring. Slow in and fast out is boring. D1 show drifting is boring. I gotta enter the corner with a deathwish just to get any emotion at all. The art of brake drifting is practically dead. No one masters it. So even the truly special corner entry lines the car is capable of, are rarely used and rarely seen. Trying to build a real 86 to equal my vision of one is unrealistic. The car has many issues with its reliability stock. You need the 20v silver top bottom end and the black top turbo head combined for maximum oil flow. THe silver top has piston oil coolers and 7 rib mains. The black top has the stronger head and higher lifting valves. I mean come on and on top of that , youd really need a dry sump rally engine to enjoy a 10,000 rpm build. Thanks to youtube and facebook marketplace, the prices are outrageous. Ill just keep using my G27 wheel and VR2 setup with some headphones. The thrill of the cars looks and the desire to compete in corners with the car against others has all but died. I just want to keep perfecting my brake drifting style at full speed in my favorite car. Nothing else really matters. Ive seen videos of the drift king breaking gearboxes and blowing engines. Ive seen him trading out 3rd gear and 5th gear and trading pistons for matching weights. ITs just not worth all that crap when the things im trying to do are too hard on a real wet sump street engine. In the end, I found that I wasnt so much in love with the cars performance. I was in love with the cars look, sound, and balance made for high speed corner entry. Watching this thing go into a corner at full blast with a brake drift is just the coolest thing in automotive history. I was seduced. To this day, all I drive online is the ae86 and I love it to death. I still wont pay 10k for one though. VR technology has come far enough that I dont feel desperate to own one anymore. I like having an indestructible virtual 86 that allows me to experiment and nothing else feels like the 86 on GT7. Once you start using the clutch pedal in VR2 the car wakes up as the real thing. Its like a different set of physics gets unlocked and you can really start to drive it like its the real thing. The fun factor is amazing. Own a real one and some punk will just steal it. Own a real one and you will also never get a moments peace. I own a 87 honda accord lxi that has the same body style as the Ae86 and i get bothered about it 4 times everyday that I deliver pizzas in it. I like the attention sometimes, but other times its just annoying. Im old, and I dont care anymore about how retro or cool it is to the youth. ITs not like any of them can drive clutch anyway. ITs a FWD. But then, when you think you are about to sell it, some hot girl hangs out the window and says, I LIKE YOUR CAR ! Then I smirk and tell myself, not yet....ill keep it a little longer. JDM cars from the golden age should never be taken for granted. What we always get to have, is STYLE and as drivers what we always should go for, is STREET CHARISMA. Right Ryosuke? lol Let the Prius go by. Let the Yaris go by. Let the all wheel steering new supra go by. Let the ugly FR-S go by. We represent style, skill, charisma and charm of the lost art of mecha grip and mecha tuning. Its not meant for punks and their endless pissing contests. We were searching for something special and lap times had nothing to do with the dream we were chasing. Initial D was a blessing and a curse for all of us but I wouldnt trade the experiences I had for anything. Chase something great, like Buntas style or Ryosukes style. The ultra refined upper limit of car control and adaptability will make you feel more special than winning a contest of power or even cornering. Be a specialist. Stick to the car you love the most no matter how much time goes by and one day you'll find yourself reaching a level you didnt think possible. The AE86 is one of the only cars in history with the ability to grow you as a driver in an unlimited capacity. You can find the cars limits but the car always raises your own , the longer you drive it. It is the greatest machine ever invented for a man to drive. It embodies the playful spirit of the Nintendo age. The best magic spell of the 80s was weaved into this chassis. I love it. I will always love it. But I WONT SPEND 10 k on one.

1 more small thing about the "vins" on these cars, ae86, ae88, etc. Theyre not "ae86s" because of the vin. Ae86 doesnt refer to the "vin", it refers to the *chassis* of the car. Whether its an Sr5 or GTS in the states, both have "ae86" stamped onto the firewall chassis because theyre both ae86s.

I'm sorry, I can't abide the prius comment. Lots of AE86 have the beams engine which doesn't scream through the gears to get to speed, but the 86 never boasted speed. If you watched Initial D the only benefit the car had over all the others was the drivers understanding of inertial drift especially on the downhill. The 86 was about balance and handling, and I doubt prius ever challenged the 86 on the touge.

1- tranny is going out and I bought a nice running WRX for less than the tranny repair. 2- 1st gear doesn't let you in until nearly stopped and supposedly that's how it is. 3-Headlights are not bright compared to new cars and no longer pop up. Heater, defroster, fan are museum level. 4- door pull pocket is right where my elbow sits. It's sharp cracked hard plastic edges are annoying to say the least. 80 bucks for something we can 3d print for a dollar. Rare drivers seat has a width adjustment knob that bangs my right elbow right in the funny bone...hard. I'm gonna take a hacksaw to it and it's rare. 5- LSD was shot and just doing research was a pain. Torsen, clutch type, lock up levels, brands and into ring gears and ratios. 6- sounding fast when you are not annoys the neighbors and law enforcement. 7- everyone wants a piece of the action. It's like being the fastest gun in the West but you just wanted to go to the store. 8- made out of origami with zero crash protection. 9- gotta drive in traffic with a car that should be in a museum. 10- it made the faster WRX seem ho hum somehow.

"5- LSD was shot and just doing research was a pain. Torsen, clutch type, lock up levels, brands and into ring gears and ratios." Stock LSD in the ae86s are crap. Some people erroneously insist theyre "1 way", or "2 way" or whatever. Theyre not "any" way LSDs. Though if you "had" to pick, theyre closest to a "2 way", but the reality is theyre simply not that kind of LSD. "Whatever-way" LSDs refer to a type of clutch LSD that has a cam/ramp set up, where accelerating or decelerating drives a cam into a set of ramps, driving the clutches together, causing the wheels to lock up. The stock ae86 lsd doesnt have any cam/pinion set up. The tension in the comes partially from how the plates are stacked, but predominantly from a set of springs inside pushing the clutches together at all times (which is why theyre "kinda" like a 2 way, as they have the same lock up on accel or decel. But to be more specific: it has the same lock up at all times). If youre going to do something to the LSD, go aftermarket. Do *not* go with a torsen. Torsen are relatively poo' when it comes to solid axle rear ends. Get a clutch lsd. Cusco, tomei, TRD, whatever. either a 1.5 or 2 way. 1.5 are a smidge "easier" to use without having some notable understeer on corner entry, 2 ways are what pretty much everyone drifting or racing use however (Of course thats a rule of thumb. youll always find exceptions). How much "lock up" will depend on if you want to drift, or race the thing.

They think they know shit about my car but will start rattling off these “facts” they got from initial D or whatever article written by a jaded 27 year old. Sure, I’m 20k deep in a car that is isn’t “fast” but it’s sure as hell the most fun I’ve had in. A car. I’ve had plenty of faster cars but it’s nice to be able to bang gears without getting a felony. My gti was 400 whp and it got me in trouble and my ss Camaro was the same. My 67 Chevy makes 500 whp and it does nothing but smoke tires but when it hooks it’s just scary. It’s rickety and has more power than it should. The 86 is fun and I can keep up with some of my buddies with faster cars on tight back roads because they can’t use all that power. Sure whenever we hit a straight they leave me but tighter roads I can hang with them

I just paid $840 or so, and got the BGRS Wilwood kit on their 8-6 day sale. It's bullshit! To hate their heritage program has nothing to do with the car, really.
