Thank you David, this is helpful for all artists. I use a sketchbook to practice and try new things. Painting in my sketchbook is just for me and what I create in my sketchbook doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, just having creative fun.

Wise advice. I’ve been painting for 5 years and just beginning to “find” my art. I’ve worked on learning the basics and that helped, now it is practice practice practice and more practice. Thanks for giving the basics a boost 🙏

What a perfect set of guidelines for us (me) beginning painters! I had to laugh when you said “your paintings WILL suck!” You are right! They totally suck! I felt some amount of despair, then said well, too bad - let’s move on. Also I think we need to realize that EVERYTHING we paint is NOT PRECIOUS! I have started using large sketchbooks to practice the “rules” of composition and design, and to paint swatches of every paint color I have. I also try doing small paintings in them, and when they predictably suck, you are right - it is just paper!! Thanks again for such great advice!

Making bad paintings is part of being a painter. The good news is you have fewer the more experience you get.

WHO has the right to say a painting is good or bad? My brother thinks Van Gogh’s art is weird. I love his paintings and got interested in knowing about his life. Read his letters. Went to a Van Gogh art show. Touched his art. I got a Picasso drawing done quickly, I’m sure, advertising one of his art shows...tattooed on my arm because it reminds me of my daughters. I love it. If you are happy with it....that’s what matters most. I saw a canvas painted one color sell for millions of dollars. It wasn’t good to me yet I did like the mauve. My daughter likes minimalist art only. That’s not me. Each judge yourself. IMO

I trust your teachings. However, I need help understanding how learning to draw is a prerequisite for abstract art. Thanks for any help you can give me in clarifying this issue.
@davidm.kesslerfineart1717

Its a prerequisite for art in general. If you determine, as an abstract painter, that the best way for you to develop a good composition is to draw it out first and make a value study from that. Maybe as a beginner, you try abstract painting and find it isn’t for you, so you move on to another type of painting. You need to learn to draw period in my mind to call yourself an artist. Don’t take short cuts, that’s what everyone else does.

I’ve been doing acrylic pour paintings lately. So now I rarely use brushes unless I’m adding embellishments.

You don’t need to know anything about art to pour paint. It’s the scourge of the art world. Most people pour paint because they don’t want to learn to make real art. You should stop doing that and learn to paint. There is no future in paint pouring my friend.

@@lasartdesignz7087 I think pour paintings can be beautiful. What is "real" art can be subjective. If people like to look at it or it provokes thought or emotion, if it means something to the viewer or to the creator, I say it's real enough. Besides which, art isn't just about the end product; it's also about enjoying the process. I say keep up with your pour painting as long as you enjoy it!

I keep hearing learn the fundamentals but what are they. I draw well enough. I don’t draw realism but well enough to know what I’m drawing. I asked a college art professor to teach me and he said no, I don’t want to change how you paint. Talent in drawing is something I won’t be great at but I also love Van Gogh while ppl tell me he sucks. Why do you say your art is bad? If you like it.....someone else will. So many art pieces I see that sells for $$$$$$$$$$$$$ are not what I’d call talent.
