Preserving your work should be the end goal but it's a goal that should begin early. So many people do so much genealogical work only for it to be thrown away by their children. Always scan and post your most important documents to your ancestor galleries at Ancestry, FamilySearch and MyHeritage. And yeah, DNA test as many older relatives as possible before it's too late. I lost three aunts that could have been tested because I wasn't forward thinking enough.

I take pics of pics & put them on family tree sites, I don't know any of my older relatives. My mom knew them, she, passed last year, never had a chance to do a dna test. My dad passed several yrs ago, but I never knew that side on my family & having a hard time finding them.

The lack of people to test is my problem as well. I have interviewed the oldest relatives but they're starting to die off. How is it that at just under 50 I'm the oldest?

1: I am working on. I inherited a lot of pictures and I am still trying to keep them separated by branch at the very least! Also, my story on this one. My MIL stored a lot of things in her garage. And raccoons started living in it. Thankfully they did not get to the documents and after a good airing out they are salvageable, but boy did that make my stomach ache. 2: I did give my living grandparents and my parents memory books to try to get stories out of them. But they are being slow to write. I think they have a similar problem as me. I want it to be complete and perfect the first time. 3:I was able to test all 4 of my grandparents at Ancestry, and transfered to My Heritage and GedMatch. Now I am trying to see if I can get my great-aunts or even a first cousin of theirs to test. But as they are the oldest generation they are dying off before I can get even ask. (Though one just straight up said no.) 4: I am actually doing this in reverse, sorta. I am working on building down my tree but adding people from a family history book and verifying them with records (and trying to bring them up to modern times but at least to the 1940's). 5: My tree has always been public. And except for a few research trees I do keep my research public. I am keeping my best friend's tree private right now. Maybe later we can open it up but for the moment hers I am keeping private.

#1 Good! #2 My husband uses a Cpap machine, and stores a large container of water in the bedroom. Yep - I stored plastic baggie collections of photos (that I had removed from albums) ready for scanning into families.....and they all got soaked! My heart broke, but after carefully drying them and then steaming them, we were able to salvage almost all. The water now lives far away from the stored photos....most of which are now uploaded to my computer. #3 Would love to test my 93 yr old sister, but she doesn't live near me (Arizona - I am in Ontario Canada) but my niece says she won't do it so I have to back away from that. #4 Since I began my research in 1974, some of my sources say things like "wrote to the church and got a reply from the vicar"....I really should get on that #5 My tree is "private" on Ancestry, but I do share with other like minded family members who are mindful of keeping "living" people off trees that they are working on. Many in my family are very concerned with privacy issues, so I have to respect that. I know that Ancestry doesn't show "living people" but others do.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics

Regarding #5. I typically don't add living people to my family tree unless they have granted me permission for the purposes of DNA research. Otherwise, I keep all living profiles offline.

1. Collecting the perishable records ✅ and making digital copies ✅ (an old marriage licence had my step dad's paternal great grandmother with a last name we'd never heard of before.. Turns out she was married before and she provided us that surname as well as her maiden name.. only she didn't explain. When I finally figured it out I was so grateful for that one small addition) 2. Leverage the living ✅ (so many wonderful stories!) 3. Test the oldest ✅ I'm even getting brave enough to ask my biological father to test. We haven't spoken in years, family history might break down that barrier 4. Sources ✅ ✅ (a cousin and I check the other's trees so we can double check each other, ask the right questions, search for every resource, etc.. It's great to have a buddy of sorts, 4 eyes are better than two! 5. Share the tree ✅ I keep family search updated as well as my public ancestry and find my past trees. I also have genealogy heirs set so my work won't disappear into the internet æthers Excellent video! I've been sick lately so I haven't caught you live for some time, but I still very much appreciate you Devon! (You too Andy!) Anna ❤

Question - Your thoughts about this alternative? I just don't have the patience to write anything or for that matter really say anything. Lately, I have been thinking of doing short youtube videos telling my story. Last week, I went to the previous addresses (if in existence) and took pictures of myself in front of the spot. I actually left a note for the current resident of a home that my great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, 3 aunts 2 uncles and 6 cousins lived in. She has invited me back to the home. I will be bringing my granddaughter with me. I am excited and plan to share with them where we all slept in this 3 bedroom house which is the EXACT same square footage today that it was then. LOL

I just received my cousin's work and guess where it is? In the garage! My photos and some items are in tubs in the garage too. I am maxed out on space in my house. My main YDNA test taker opted out. Now, working on how to convince my brother!

Oh no! In the garage is the worst! But, I recognize space is a limitation. That's why I become very continuous about digitizing everything and finding better homes for the things I'm willing to part with. Good luck. It's so difficult, but I can relate. Convincing is hard. Gentle persuasion is best.

I have found so many things online and through the help of others. I make sure to download and put things that I find on USB's. I don't have much outside of what I have found online. When I do find pictures, I keep them but also take pictures of those pictures in case something happens to them. I have only 1 grandma who I am able to talk with and who can remember back to her parents, aunts, uncles and one set of grandparents. Everything else that I find, I make sure to back up with documentation. If I can't find documentation then I usually put it to the side or forget about it completely.

1-I am doing ok on this-I've put notes on the back bottom of the hand made items (I have a a lot of wood workers and furniture makers in my family) with the name of who made the item, where and when. Trying to identify who is who in the old photos and scanning all the paper items. 2&3- I'll never forget the day a cousin looked at me at his mother's funeral and said "Do you realize we're the OLDEST generation now" 4-I learned early on to list sources not only is it good practice but also so I don't redo what I've already done 5 I try to tell the fun stories family members can relate to so they'll remember what I said/written

#1 Could be better. But, after a storage building and all of its contents, including the flag that draped my uncle's coffin, negatives of photos of my great-grandparents, an antique cash register from my husband's family, my wedding dress, our first baby bed and many other irreplaceable things...were stolen, there wasn't much left to preserve or photograph. The one thing that didn't get stolen, because it was in my possession at the time (we were moving), was a bell that my grandma's sister gave to me. I do not know the story behind the bell, but it is right here with me and survived the move from South Carolina to Texas. No way was I going to trust a moving company with it after what had already happened! #2 The only two people left with the family stories are my mother-in-law and David's dad's sister. His mother loves genealogy as much as I do, and we do have some of her stories. Unfortunately, she is having some memory issues now (she's 83). His aunt wants nothing to do with discussing family history and gets upset if we ask anything about it. :( #3 My mother (deceased Oct 2021), my father, and my mother-in-law, my father's older brother, and my mother's oldest brother, have all been DNA tested. All were tested at Ancestry, with the exception being my mother. She was tested at MyHeritage. I wish that I'd known then what I know now! #4 I did not know to source trees when I first started all those years ago. I was only 14 when I started this adventure. As I work on various parts of my tree, I am going back through to find records so that my tree is properly sourced. I have a very long way to go! #5 My main tree is public. This one does not include my biological father. The daddy who raised me remains in the "father" slot on that tree at the request of our children. To be honest, I didn't want to remove him anyway. He's the one who loved and raised me. I do have my biological pedigree linked to my DNA, so hopefully no matches will be confused. Our oldest daughter knows how to access everything, so that she can carry on after I'm gone. These trees are shared with various people. Thanks for another great video, Devon!

1. As good as possible but sadly my now dead great-grandparents threw away many of their photos and stuff which would've helped me significantly with getting an image for some of my ancestors (our guess is they threw it away because of the Nazi-era). But every other source I have (many many sources) is scanned. 2. On my father's side very good, many stories are still told and my grandpa also tries to write down some of them himself. Sadly I often don't have the chance to visit the parents on my mother's side and they're (like me) not the biggest storytellers. 3. Unfortunately never did but this is something I especially have to do with my grandma because she's half-polish. 4. Working on it right now with all the new sources scanned. 5. Public Ancestry and familysearch tree. Those two are my main ones where I do a lot of research and they both have advantages and disadvantages, thus playing quite nicely together.

I have put pictures on Ancestry. In my hints my pictures show up with someone else as the sources of the pictures. I messaged her who she was and how am I getting my pictures with her name on them. And please put my name as the resource for my own pictures. I got no response.

Several things could be happening. She could be 'stealing' the picture and care less that you were the original source. Or she could be using a program that downloads all of the media she links to her family tree. Then, when she changes information in the tree, that program will reupload the media as her submissions. She might not realize what she's doing and wouldn't be able to resolve it. This is one reason I dislike the Ancestry platform and their pictures not being validated as being unique to the overall database.

How fast one becomes part of the oldest generation living! My mother was an "old school" genealogist, before computers were invented. My sister inherited BOXES of papers.... she is keeper of those. I have done my DNA, and my sister recently did hers. Of my dad's side, my brother is living, but not in good health. His son has had his DNA done. Can I gather information about my father's side of the family from my brother's son? He has had his DNA done. (both of us didn't on 23andMe). I'm the tree builder. my tree was public for a while, and I found my information was going on trees that were not related to my family at all. So I made it private.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics 2 жыл бұрын
You can gather DNA from your brother's son. It's a great substitute if you don't have anything else. So, do what you can with what you have. I run into the same problem of my family appearing on family trees that weren't mine and we're not even remotely related, I still encourage people to make their family trees public. It's much more difficult to collaborate and pass on information after we pass if we keep things private.

For dna test if you are doing genealogy use Ancestry over 23&me. Even if you have a well put together family tree 23&me sucks and has zero records to match people to you.
@FamilyHistoryFanatics
@FamilyHistoryFanatics Жыл бұрын
While Ancestry has records, there are many people in 23andMe that are not in any other DNA database. As such, we often say, test with Ancestry and 23andMe (since you can not transfer a DNA test into those websites). Then transfer your DNA to MyHeritage, LivingDNA (if you have UK ancestors), Family Tree DNA, and GEDmatch. Then your DNA is in all the databases for best chance of finding DNA matches to build a genetic family tree.

For living people, I can totally respect their wishes. For deceased individuals, I have a different philosophy. For the most recently deceased, I use care in what I share. For the more distant deceased (50+ years ago), I share the information as part of a collaborative effort to document everyone who has ever lived so they are gone, but not forgotten. Additionally, I don't want my knowledge to remain stuck in a private, inaccessible family tree. What do you think about that graduated approach to sharing information about our ancestors online?
