I have owned my 2021 F150 PowerBoost Lariat 502a now for a few months and wanted to talk about some of the reasons why I hate it. Overall this truck has been by far the best truck I have ever owned but it is not without its faults so I thought I would share some of those things on KZfaq.

To be fair to the Powerboost, a lot of things you don't like are general F150 designs rather than an issue specific to the Powerboost. One thing that I'd say about the Powerboost is that I wished it kicked in a little more often.

Really nice video Dan as you’re showing both sides of the truck because I know you like it. Nowadays these videos sometimes can just be a how great it is but that doesn’t help people that may be buying them if there’s really problems. I have gone back-and-forth between the F150 and the ram 1500 multiple times but must say old F150 platinum is still my favorite truck.

An exceptionally good review. Your five things, referenced and explained so well, I hope someone gets this video review to Ford and Ford fixes all that, because every point you made is a valid concern. Come on Ford, fix this stuff, now! Thanks for the creative and very useful review. I had been leaning towards the new GMC Sierra AT4X, but that collapsible, flat, center front console work space got my attention big time about the Ford F150 Raptor. I love the Raptor, but not if Ford doesn't fix these issues.

I doubt the camera issue will be changed as NHTSA has a say in driver distractions. Cameras, I believe have to shut down after vehicles reach a certain speed. Sync 2 had a movie playing feature but only in Park. Possibly it could be hacked some way, but don’t expect an OEM change.

Excellent video and I agree with all points after owning mine for 18 months. The transmission is not smooth at all (except in Eco mode), the door handles suck when trying to get my son in, the bed cargo camera when I moved, etc. I feel your pain. I've been a Ford guy my entire life, but I may become a GMC guy on my next purchase (who knows when). My battery just dropped from 12V to 11.5V and I got warnings everywhere for days and the main 12in screen stopped working at the same time. 4 days later the battery is happy, and the screen works but I didn't do anything. Technology is only as good as the human who programs it.

YES, you should be able to unlock the back doors from the outside. I have about 2K miles on mine went out last weekend with my 28' Airstream to a US Forest Campground no services on a beautiful lake and the 7.2K generator standard on my Limited did a great job powering the Airstream both A/C's and anything you wanted to turn on. I was surprised how well the generator did many times the truck was not even running and both air conditions on the Airstream are running. The Ford app is handy to monitor the usage. I purchased a heavy duty dongle to go from Generator round plug 30amps 240v to RV 50amp plug, it gave me 2 legs of 120v at 30amps each. We were there for 22 hours and 26 mins, as displayed on the truck and by the loss of distance to empty and gas gauge I estimate we used about 3.8 gallons in 22:26, not bad! When using the generator overnight don't forget to turn OFF Auto headlamps, Auto wipers and dim the display. I wish you had the option to turn off all displays as were the only one at the campground and it was pitch black dark, except for the glow of the instrument panel. (In two weeks camping again with the generator I will bring a black blanket to throw on the dash) 😂

Hi Hubbard, would you mind sharing a link to this dongle you bought. I have noticed that if I run my dewalt mitter saw out of either outlet , it trips it until I try a few more times and then it stops tripping it. So I am thinking of going through the 220 outlet and passing it through a voltage regulator, I think this would solve the issue.

CAn u add how many btus each air conditioner is? Im curious if it would run my house ac unit that has a 180 LRA for startup. What is the surge power of this generator? Any and all info much appreciated regarding the vehicle. The one Imlooking at is also a lariat with 11k mileage on it.... Theyre initially ask 56k for it.. Excellent video, and all VERY valid points. I bought my first Ford ever, a Ford F150 Lariat in 2018.... and like you, custom ordered it. I absolutely LOVE the truck..... but I can totally relate to these points.... with my top 2 being the proximity door handle and the camera issues you recounted. I have jerked my shoulder around countless times grabbing the rear door handle after a trip to Menards because I am 'trained' to open my driver's door with the proximity feature..... but not thinking that the feature is only active on the front door handles. Very frustrating - but has probably been humorous for people in the parking lot watching me jerk my body around unable to open the back door...haha And I have told people many times as well how stupid it is to not allow the rear cargo camera and rear tailgate camera to operate while moving.... makes ZERO sense. I would add, that I also hate the fact that you cannot have your side mirror spotlights on unless you are at a virtual standstill..... how about allowing them to operate up to 15 miles per hour?? Sometimes I am out in the country driving, and see a deer cross in front of me..... slow down..... and want to turn on the side mirror spotlights so that I can see if there are additional deer about to cross..... cannot do that.

I’m surprised that my #1 gripe didn’t make your list. The dang double honk when you exit the truck and close the door while it is running. Can’t turn it off with normal in-truck menu (need aftermarket like OBD2 and Forscan). I hate this so much! I’m with you on the back door lock. Every other vehicle I’ve owned since 2014 has it set to all handle unlock. I knew this going in (from the test drive) but I just couldn’t resist this sexy beast. But definitely very annoying. Great video great points!

I have a 21 F150 but an XLT and I love it. There are a few minor things like the rear doors not having the unlock sensors like you mentioned. That is a little annoying but I can live with it. The transmission did shift hard at first but after 5000 miles its smooth as glass. I cant even tell its shifting to be honest with you so the people that are complaining about it probably don't have enough miles on yet for the computer to learn their driving habits. I agree with every point you made in this video. I owned a brand new Lariat FX4 for about two months and ultimately traded it due to what you have described. I’d add a few more items to the list in my case: Rust on the frame and axle, thin paint on the roof, wipers hitting a-pillar. And I could go on and talk about the defective automatic tailgate, transmission missing shifts, hood coming unlatched, the remote not being found by the computer, and rattle behind the mirrors (that I fixed). But it might be upsetting to some.

Agreed. I own one also, and will keep it with these issues. It is light years ahead of my last GMC that I couldn’t keep on the road (3 years and 146 days in the dealership). Paint may be thin on the Ford, but at least it stayed on the truck my GMC had to be repainted twice under warranty from paint peeling off. Bad trani they could never fix. Bad electrical ghosts they could never fix, and the list goes on and on with leaks and seats and rear end clunking. Loved the 6.2L engine but I can’t keep a truck for one thing when the rest just wouldn’t hold up. 35k on my Ford and has only been back for regular maintenance.. thank god!

Dan, I agree with you on the transmission issue. I've had 3 F-150s with the 10 speed tranny. 2011, 2017 and now 2021. They all did the intermittent hard shift... not consistently... and mostly at lower speeds. My PowerBoost does it less than my older models, but it still does it. You are spot on re: the cameras. They are way under utilized. You'd be surprised about how many software updates you have gotten. Mine had some really bad Sync4 bugs from day one (received it on March 5, 2021). But they have fixed almost all of them. My biggest issue is interfacing with my iPhone. It just intermittently goes stupid on me and I have to re-sync it with my phone. Oddly enough it seems to coincide more with iPhone updates than Ford updates. 😳 My biggest bitch about the software is one of the same you have. There are settings that should be able to be turned on and stay on. Like keep the stupid thing in ECO mode until I tell it otherwise, for one. I've never seen the "door unlocking" issue you have. On mine, if I walk up to the truck (FOB in pocket) and I touch the handle on the driver's door it unlocks all the doors. There is a little switch or something on the inside side of the driver's door handle.. try touching that. The drivers door handle is certainly different than the other 3. As for the Hybrid issue. It is almost useless for highway driving, but does get me a few more miles/gallon in city driving. ECO mode is supposed to give you better control of the Hybrid system... but what real use is a Hybrid pickup that can only go maybe a mile on electric and then only at slow speeds. I agree that it seems to be more suited to supporting the 7.2K watt "generator" than improving fuel mileage. Speaking of the "generator"... Its not all its cracked up to be. The rear 115V plugs are supposed to be 20 amp... HOWEVER I have an air compressor that if I plug it into the truck and start it, it trips the power off, every time, but I can plug it into a 15 Amp 115V plug in my garage and it has no issues tripping any breakers when starting, so to say this is "like a generator" is complete BS. I remember the first "word" I heard before these came out was that the Hybrid would be able to go 10 miles on a fully charged battery pack. NOT EVEN CLOSE! It is a Hybrid vehicle in name only... My biggest issue is this thing doesn't even come close to doing the 24 City 24 HIghway mileage. They pulled the same stunt on my old 2013 Fusion Hybrid by grossly overstating the fuel economy numbers. FTC sued them and we got an $800 check from Ford to make up for its overstated mileage. We now have a 2019 Fusion Titanium plug in Hybrid and it easily make the 43 MPG highway mileage number on the sticker and is a joy to drive... has a really tight suspension and handles like a dream. Cruise control at 70 MPH 280 mile trip from eastern Washington to Portland, Oregon. 275 miles. Gets 42/43 every time on premium fuel. It is a remarkable vehicle. And the idiots at FOMOCO were going to discontinue it after 2019. Thank goodness they came to their senses, at least temporarily.

Thanks for the video, you'd think that Ford would have worked out the bugs in the software, seeing how it pretty much runs a significant part of the truck, before production and I definitely agree with the chrome interior, same would happen here in New Mexico, southeast to be exact, and I cringed a bit when I heard that clunky noise of the transmission, that can be a dangerous situation especially away from home. I've been trying to wrap my head around with either buying a truck with straight v8 or power boost, still undecided, I drive 250 miles 5x week, towing upwards of 2500-4k lbs of parts for paint and body shops in the area. Like to see an update after 1 year an if you received those software updates yet.

Thanks! This power boost is a bit weird to adjust to, but it makes up for it with the crazy torque, towing with this truck is pretty epic. My biggest gripe right now is that I like Android auto and very intermittently I can get it to record journeys on the ford app. Why can't they just make it work? I've also had to reboot the entertainment system twice now. Once it was playing Bluetooth audio, but it says audio was off and I couldn't turn it on, couldn't select Sirius/am/FM.... Another time the volume control for stuck to only adjusting the prompt volume. Final gripe is the pedestrian warning system and the backup sounds. If the ICE is running why do those still have to engage? Ford should at least give the option to disable that except when running on electric, which I am totally fine with.

Thanks for the video. A Ford "feature" is that most settings reset to default every time you shut the vehicle off. How annoying. I'd like to run my truck in Eco mode, but for my safety I have to set it to Eco every time I turn the vehicle on. I feel so safe. Imagine the carnage if I could keep it in Economy mode. Again, thanks for taking the time.

I have 15,000 on my 2021 Lariet PB - I had problems with an insulating "pad" above the drive shaft, it came loose and made a thumping noise at certain speeds, the dealer knew exactly what it was and fixed with aluminum tape. That is the ONLY issue - I get 21 to 25 MPG all day long, city, highway (80 to 83) - change the oil every 5K this will be a high mileage vehicle for sure. The only critique I have - the shifter is flunky for sure, BUT you need to be patient with it - you can't just jump in, press start and slam it into gear - it takes a second or so for the electronics to "approve" the move if you will. It is really a well thought out truck, really incredible mileage, looks greats, hauls ASS and is fun to drive.

You pay all that money for a truck and worried about fuel mileage???? Essentially paid $10,000 more plus Interest and Taxes on that money to get 3-5 MPG more. It’ll take 200,000+ miles to recoup that $10,000+ in fuel. Basically all you’ve done was pay for fuel savings upfront with the assumption you’ll be able to recoup it.

Great point about the cameras. I've been considering a power boost buy but the tech heaviness of the product has put me off to some extent. I tend to keep my vehicles for around 10 years so I'd be concerned about maintenance costs down the line. When Ford misses an obvious design opportunity they for some reason tend to not go back and try to remedy issues. I've always thought that the 360 camera system should have a way to attach a hard drive so you could capture the video but although it's been out there for a number of years now, they're still not including that as an option. From what I understand, it won't be available on 2024 models either.

I custom made mines. I didn’t need all those extra features. I wanted the hybrid engine, no floor Carpet, and work leather seats. That’s not a normal order so they didn’t have it at the dealer. I’m not a big fan of all those extra features because I fell like they break easily. I’m getting use to the shifting still. So far I love my truck. I can go 600 miles with a tank of gas and I can hall anything I need. Also it’s crazy fast, comfortable, and specious. I saved a ton of money custom making it. It came out to around $50k and I got 0% through ford, which was great.

Let me clarify, I don't mean viewing it on the small right side of screen. I mean full screen. When you begin to drive, hit the physical camera button above your screen. This brings up a camera selection on the screen. Pick a camera, and it displays, while driving, except the front one. If you stop and start again, it will shut off, but you can turn it back on.

On my 2021 , the only problem was the auto start/stop feature. It has an on-off button on the dash, but it's annoying to have to shut it off every time I drive. One day, it stopped working completely only to find out there is a total disable feature deep in the display menu. I was in the general screen under the Trip 1 display. If you arrow down four times, you get to the engine control management menu. From this point, you can disable it completely, so you no longer have to manually turn it off at the dash switch. This was discovered accidentally, and I am embarrassed after taking it to the dealer only to find that there is a hidden over-ride option. The second and only problem I have with the vehicle was the AC inverter plugs in the cab and in the bed. They work for two or three seconds after the ignition is cycled on, then the amber light goes out, and they are dead. The dealer ordered new outlets and, hopefully, that will remedy the situation. Otherwise, I am satisfied with the new body contours, and the driver assist electronics over my 2014 Ram Limited. No vehicle is ever perfect in every way. Once the bugs are eliminated, I will be raving about my new ford.

Shift points have been an issue on all model years with the 10R80 transmission. Since I have the key fob in my pocket, if I am going to need to access the back door, I just unlock them as I'm approaching the truck. I know, not as convenient, but I have mine configured so that only the driver's door unlocks when I touch it, not even passenger side front, for security reasons in rougher neighborhoods. That shifter issue sounds like a mechanical issue. Great point about those rear facing cameras. Unfortunately Ford does not have a history of correcting engineering issues if it is not costing them any money the way it is; there is no corporate pride in the brand, only corporate bottom line. That said, I just ordered a 2022 PowerBoost Lariat FX4...dealer says 6-9 months to delivery.

Arizona 2021 F150 XLT owner I have those issues minus the shifter problem, that seems like a major safety issue. My sync 4 won't load Careplay several times a week without resetting my Iphone, even then it can take a while for the system to work. Or it will play without sound. Several times now it won't disengage blue tooth so when I'm near the truck (with it off) I can't hear any thing and have to turn blue tooth off on my phone. My steering wheel is off center by 3 degrees, haha. A heat barrier under the bed has fallen off. The left inner wheel well cover is warped and grabs the tire when backing up with a locked turn. I like that lane centering assist doesn't work actually. Onboard Nav will drop out for no reason.

I don't have the truck, yet... considering the Hybrid version. I'd think your frustration with the door handle is actually a good security feature. I've heard that car jackers/thieves sometimes approach vehicles from the passenger side and wait for you to approach the driver's door, but pop open the passenger side to gain entry before you can...not sure it's true, but it seems like a possibility.

Trying to come up with a backup camera on my trailer without having a separate monitor in the cab is a puzzle for me so-far. Maybe a combination of WI-FI camera, my iPhone and CarPlay will do it. I was heartened by the presence of a 7/12 port setup on the back, but that is apparently only for Sway Control, which I don't need since I have a friction snubber. (I found the sway-sensor cable and all the trailer mounted bits under the front seats.) I spent a lot of time hard-wiring my Trailer, motorhome, and 8.1 Suburban. I am retiring the 8.1, so if nothing else works, I can remove the cable, monitor and bumper outlet from that and wire up the 2021 F-150 XLT, but it seems annoying to need to find a place for a second monitor in a truck that already has a huge screen. If there is a way to add a trailer camera to the stock 360-degree camera system, please someone educate me, I'm just getting started here.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the jerky transmission shifting at low speeds like prior to slowing down for a turn or taking off from a stop light. Perhaps mine is not broken in yet with 1,400 miles on it, but so far I haven't come close to matching the EPA gas mileage ratings even when attempting to "hypermile"! On my 2016 F-150 Eco-boost I typically exceeded those ratings. I have a King Ranch so it's quite loaded inside and out and looks gorgeous, however so far I'd have to say looks are deceiving!
