I bought a 96 4x4 Manual SR5 this summer up in Sac and man I felt this video. I wanted a capable barebones truck and well... My 5: 1) The way the truck has aged since I bought it, kinda like your issues (Steatbelts; both retracting and clipping in, Speedometer cable, terrible lighting, electric locks kinda fading, window regulators kinda struggling, clutch pedal issues) 2) The hood rattling up & down 3) Lack of aftermarket support 4) The shallow bed 5) Really crappy cupholders ...But I still love this truck

I have every issue you just listed.. i’m so happy i’m not alone.. and my speedo cable started making noise about a month ago, it’s getting worse daily.. but i’ll keep addressing each problems they come.. great comment, we’ll said 👍🏼

My speedometer cable makes noise too. But only when the stereo is off. I had the same problem with my hood. You need to epoxy it back down onto the bars underneath it. If you don't the flapping will cause the clear coat to fail. Mine came that way and it is the only place when the paint isn't in great condition. They hadn't figured out how to make usable cup holders back in the 1990s. It must be a complex technology. I stuff my cup in the hole where the seat belt attaches.

Weak hvac condensers are pretty common on older Hondas, I usually keep a few of those giant "do not eat" dessicant packets around older cars, helps a ton. Throwing a few up against the inside of the windshield when it's extra wet has always worked for me.

Oh man! Just find this and my experience is totally opposite! Driving 1990 Toyota Hilux (Japan made named here in EU) just for the nostalgia! No power doors, seats, windows, mirros not even power steering! No AC no just almost nothing! No ABS, Airbags etc. Got seat belts still! But that 90's era nostalgia is huge and I am loving it! (not my daily driver) 😄

I have a 95 T100 4WD automatic SR5 3.4 and it has 402k miles with original engine and transmission and still going very strong. I have 32x10.50r15 wheels and drives amazing. Recently changed most steering components and suspension. Does 85+ no problem around 2800 rpm. I definitely agree having power windows and locks is a must. Glad mine has that plus power Mirrors. I put the best non-LED lightbulbs you can find and the highs still suck. They are worse than the lows like you mentioned idk why that is. The lows work good though way better than what it had before but I wish the highs were true highs.

I have a really nice 97 T100 that I use when I need a truck or the snow gets deep. a) I checked mine and there is a hard rubber gasket around where the steering goes through the floorboard. But I could still see a little light so it must let a little air in, but not near as much as if not there. b) We live in the Colorado mountains and the heat is really strong and can handle our cold. While the A/C is somewhat weak and will dehumidify enough to defrost windows well. But if I am down in Denver and it is in the upper 90s, the A/C is insufficient. But if you open the windows, the side vent windows, and the back window it has huge airflow, more than any vehicle I have ever owned. c) The only thing that has broken on mine was the clutch cylinder so it is good you replaced yours. d) The problem with modern trucks is they are too high and the sides are very tall so it makes the bed hard to use. Mine is at stock height and I would have a hard time using it if it was any higher. If you are concerned about things flying out then secure them with straps. I got a Leer topper for mine off a wrecked 96 T100 at the local junk yard. It is in excellent condition, came with Thule racks, and only cost $100. Toyota changed the shade of green between 96 and 97 so it doesn't exactly match, but nobody but me seems to notice. The weight of topper makes the truck more balanced and it seems to get a little better mpg. e) Mine is the deluxe, the model between the base and SR5. It has amenities like electric windows, locks, and mirrors. But I like the idea of manual and it was good that Toyota offered a less expensive more dependable version. The only feature really important to me is cruise control. I wouldn't mind having manual locks, but will admit not having to reach over to open the passenger window is nice. f) Replace the seat belt receptacle and forget about it. It is a minor issue. I have replaced working items like that just so they look better. g) Wake up, the lack of power is a feature! Toyota didn't know what they were doing when they designed a vehicle based on an engine that would last forever and get acceptable fuel economy. Back until a couple months ago, and especially in the 1990s, Americans wanted big V8 engines in their trucks. Anything less was a considered a joke. So Toyota couldn't sell their underpowered T100s, especially with the 25% tariff our government added to their prices. So Toyota moved T100 production to America, put in a V8, and renamed it to Tundra. My brother-in-law loved his 2008 Tundra. But we went over to his house a month ago and it was gone. He sold it because he couldn't justify the gas at 12 mpg. My T100 with its six cylinder 3.4 averages 20 mpg around town so it hasn't been obsoleted by the price of gas. h) Being old the registration is $75/year and insurance runs $20/month. I replaced the stock steel wheels with a nice set of 17 inch Tacoma alloy wheels and tires I got on craigslist for $180. T100s are cheap to own. When Mr. Fanatics says his T100 is really slow at higher speeds it is partly due to the huge tires and lifting. Is he using the speedometer or google maps to measure his speed? The speedometer will be reading low due to the increased wheel size. Being a non-turbo, when I take my T100 up the approach on I-70 to the Eisenhower tunnel (11,000 feet elevation) the fastest it can go fully floored is 50 mph. Also, where is Mr. Fanatics 4wd shifter? It appears to be missing. If it is permanently in 4wd that isn't good for mpg and the truck.

I have a sr5 1997 hilux but it’s manual locks and windows. Haven’t had any problems with it tho, battery depletion happens at -45 C but with an engine heater connected the battery also gets some heat shunt on it, so not at all bad. I live in the Arctic far north of Norway so having a reliable Toyota truck is a must.

That’s wild to hear about -45 degree temps, it barley gets below 45 where i live. if it gets even in the 30’s people talk about how it feels like “Arctic Temperatures”. That’s awesome to hear you say that having a Toyota is a must there because you depend on reliability.. 👍🏼

I have a 1993 T100 with an 8ft bed that my parents bought new the year before I was born. I did shocks, brakes, timing belt, water pump, thermostat, learning to maintain it. I have the Factory Service manual for it too, and man does it make life easy even if the work isn't. At 3:10, an interesting story for you to consider. If the parts aren't worn out, some shitheel may have poured motor oil in there. How do I know? This happened to me in my later high school years when I learned to drive, and was taking myself in. I was driving the truck, and after we got it serviced at some point the clutch kept sticking. It got worse and worse until it stayed to the firewall, and it was all I could do to pry it up with my toe. So we bring it in to a mechanic in a small logging town and he gets back to us claiming that the problem was someone had poured motor oil in that reservoir. He flushed it multiple times but said that if it had continued for much longer it would've caused transmission damage. I wonder if this is what may have happened.

Yes it does. The argument some people love to make on those is you don’t have to worry about the lock or window motor going out but you only ever have to change it out once or twice in the whole life of the truck and it’s fairly easy

A lot of this applies to my 1985 Toyota truck but the most annoying thing by far is the button I have to push on top of the steering column to release the key. What’s that about. The manual says it’s to lock the steering wheel but my parent’s 1972 Datsun didn’t have this, nor did my 1982 Isuzu or my 1987 Mazda and they all had locking steering wheels.

I’ve had a few mid 80’s Toyota trucks and 4Runners, and they had that annoying button to release the key.. obviously it wasn’t a great idea, or else they would have kept it. I’ve read that some people just epoxy the button pushed in, so you don’t have to mess with it.. i dunno if that’s a good idea.. but it’s still worth the awesomeness of having an 1985 Toyota 👍🏼

I also have a 1997 T100 and here are my thoughts: 1.I actually like the sickly green glow of my dashboard. It's the overhead light that's dim as fuck. 2. I actually like the shorter bed size because when I'm reversing I can actually see where I'm going and where the truck is in relation to everything. Then again I have a hard top holding all the big loads in. 3. Have you tried spraying WD-40 or PB Blaster in the seatbelt? My drivers seatbelt had the same problem when I bought it from the dealer and their mechanic sprayed some in right there and that fixed it. 4. People talk about aftermarket support with this truck being a big issue. They weren't kidding. I've had to order parts from China.

I have a 95 V6 DX. Exact same truck as in the video. Tires 235/75/16 Goodyear Wranglers 315000 miles , and still has its balls. It wants to go 75 mph down I 94. Yeah , about 3000 rmp, but I don't push it past that. It's an Old Truck. It excelerates uphill with no effort. Defrosts great on a 22 degree day. It's the equivalent to a chevy 1500 w/t ( work truck ). Work truck . That's what it is. Tie downs attached to the box work fine to hold anything straped in. My 5 things. 1. Under powered. Needed a ,6 speed manual for the v6 or a 5 speed small v8. It gets u around like u said. 2. Shallow floor pan. If I move my feet up by the seat, my knees are in the stearing wheel. A Higher floor pan affected the box depth. But Gave it more road clearance. Most of those trucks are low to the ground. Mine is 2WD and sits like high like a 4x4. Like the truck in the video. 3. Passanger side window suck yo crank down on a hot day. Have to move to the middle of the seat to reach it, and I'm tall. Lots of cabin room. 4. Whistling windows. Roll it down A half inch and you now have a Deer Whistler. Actually works for me at night. 5. Thermostat housing is leaking. (By Next spring it will be fixed) It's has some body rust . It's 25 years old in Michigan . The fact it wasn't crushed durring cash for clunkers is beyond me ,so I store it before they salt the roads. It was the first truck I ever bought . I has a heavy duty tow package on it with heavy duty rear bumper. Oh, someone beefed up the return spring for the clutch. It's kinda loud but works good "IF" I use it. Even A Haynes repair manual came with my purchase. Very easy to work on.

@@toyotafanatics1 Agreed about the color. Although, the color makes them distinguishable. It’s shrewd: just like DeWalt (yellow) or Bosch Professional (a distinct blue color) or Hikoki (another distinct shade or green). Especially in our very semiotic culture where video and pictures are extremely common and necessary in the marketing scheme of things. Milwaukee Electric Tools are red, but so is Hilti and Snap-On too, they are not as distinguishable in the same sense as RYOBI. I’m looking forward to a short review regarding that tool. You could have gone for Dremel too, couldn’t you? A Dremel is almost a must. A very good tool for stripped bolts and screws and the occasional too rusty yet stiff hose clamp.

The problem with your clutch not returning probably isn’t the master/slave cylinders. Replace the three plastic bushings on the clutch assembly spring. You’ll have to take the clutch assembly out, fairly easy. So why did you sell the black T100? That was a sweet truck with a good owner. This green one was from a shady owner, huge red flag.

I just changed my clutch master and slave cylinder and it fixed all the issues i was having.. the parts are pretty inexpensive and easy to install, there’s many good youtube videos about how to do it.. 👍🏼

I still got my 1989 Hilux Xtra cab 4x4 from new and I still don’t have five things I hate about my Ute. Well it’s annoying how many guys ask me to sell my baby to them!!

Hello, I'm about to buy a t100 96 but I have no idea how to put the 4x4
@toyotafanatics1
@toyotafanatics1 2 жыл бұрын
It’s easy.. you’ll see there’s a small shifter either by itself on the transmission hump between the front seats if it’s an automatic trans, and a very similar shifter close to the manual gear shifter if it’s a stick shift.. It’s referred to as a “J” shift transfer case in many Toyota trucks and suv’s. Lemme know how it goes! 👍🏼

Even the dealers don't know how to set the gears and I don't want to make a mistake by buying something that doesn't work.

I agree with all of your complaints. I wanna lift my T-100, but I can barely break 80mph! But like you, I love my quarter of a million mile truck!

buy a small squeegy I have one for my car and for my 04 ranger 4x4 Iowned at work I work security and sit in my car when it rains I get in my car and the moister gets all over my windows and I hated having to start my vehical up to clear it so I bought a small squeegie and use it wit ha rag to wipe it off it works much betetr then a rag. he old days before hydrolic clutch the peddle not coming all the way up would be the presure plate springs slightly collapsed wqhich wasnt to common a thing. hehe its a 4x4 it should have tall gears for 4x4 better off roading its not built for hwy freeway driving top speed should be aroubnd 60MPH even my old V8dodge ram fulkltime 4x4 I think it was 1977-78 top speed adn very loud becasue of being full time 4wheel drive about 60 MPH Icould go a little faster but it got loud buit excellent off road. if a person has a 4x4 and never goes off road then well why have a 4x4 its a waste of a truck

Somebody probably took out your sideview mirror and they did a poor job prepping the area before they started to put down the bondo. Then it's just a matter of time before the bondo will start to expand and contract causing the paint to crack enough to allow moisture to enter the area and sit there till it starts to rust because there is nothing to protect the metal since they didn't spray any type of rust inhibitor before they bondoed it. Just real shotty body work. It looks like it was done by an amatuer but there are body shops that do this kind of crap too because the repair usually last long enough to prevent the customer from going back and complaining about it. That's why you should only use very well established body shops with great reviews.
