5 things I hate about UX Design

This is by no means made to discourage people from pursuing a UX designer career change. I just wished someone had warned me about some of these truths before my UX designer career so I could better prepare. Don't you worry, at the end of the day, I love being a UX / Product Designer!

Oh my god. Your fourth and fifth point is my biggest fear of being UX designer. I’m so glad that you brought that up because I felt like I’m the only one who’s dreaming to become a UX designer as a super introvert. The fact that UX designers will have so many meetings and will have to debate with people made me stop and really think about the job again. I’m just starting this career and now I see a little bit of hope just by seeing someone who has a same issue with me. Thank you so much Mimi!

@@luvacias I'm an UX consultant from Germany and kind of like introvert. After 2 years, it's still an uncomfortable situation to speak and moderate workshops and stuff. It's like going out of your comfort zone, but daily. I'm thinking of changing into UI, but it doesn't pay so well.

Glad to hear an introvert can still be successful in UX. As an introvert myself, I am concerned about making the switch to a career full of meetings, advocacy and debating.

With digital product design, I have a big problem with the idea that you absolutely always need to have a "logical argument" to justify a design decision. We aren't always logical with real things that are beautiful and a joy to use. Why do we have to be when it comes to digital stuff?

Love this! When I worked with brand strategist, we tested designs all the time with users based on pure emotions and their behaviors. It doesn't always have to be so rigid, however, in my experience, I've found it easier to get stakeholders on board with logic, data, and research informed decisions.

It’s because the coding has such an insane cost. You can always do patches if something doesn’t end up working properly but it comes at a price for the company.

Your points about criticism and meetings struck a cord with me as a Graphic Designer. I hated those parts of the job so much when I first started, ESPECIALLY the criticism that I almost quit the profession all together before I realized I was being hellla dramatic lol

I love and appreciate your honesty! This information helps so much to prepare myself for the UX field and really hone in on the important skills needed (debate/data/meetings). "Never Split the Difference" by Chris Voss is a great book on how to negotiate. It's not exactly a book about "debate" per say but the author is a former hostage negotiator who shares business advice for influencing others when there's high stakes.

Good perspectives, I like this video. I have been in Digital Design/UX/Product for 20 years. My advice to Junior/Mid Weights is, you have to be your own agent. This may sound crazy but this isn't an industry for people who aren't able to negotiate situations. For instance salary is important, however, job security is, too. Many Silicon Valley companies do zero contracts or ''trial periods'' - I always make sure I negotiate at least 1 month - currently 3 months. That means that if they pivot and from being a generalist they now require you to be say a PHD style Researcher, you can revert back to the start and say, I wasn't hired to be that, and if the bi-product is ''we need that'' then they have to pay you off a large notice period. It can be beautiful if it doesn't involve non competes and you say go from Finance to Retail and have this 3 month pay off and start a role within a month or so. It isn't easy to explain, but always be good at negotiating your terms, because this industry can be turbulent bordering on volatile. Good luck to all the viewers.

I don’t really care for the term “high-functioning introvert”. It implies being an introvert is like a disease, like “high-functioning alcoholic”. I feel like being an introvert is a superpower if one can harness it.

Keep up the good fight! That's the rally cry of my UX team 😀 ... It's good to vent every once in a while. Having to debate always sucks, no matter how long youve been a designer for. What works for me is before a crit, I will meet with those who love to debate , collect their feedback, if its good feedback, I'll iterate on the design. Then when its time for the "official" presentation, it usually goes over smoothly.

Thank you for making this! I've been working in UX design for ~5 years now, and I still struggle with some of these aspects of UX. I find that company culture can make a huge difference in how frustrating or rewarding our day-to-day UX roles are. I've definitely been in an environment in which "design critique" consisted of people just slinging opinions fast and loose, with many people taking out their unrelated aggression during feedback sessions.

Great video, Mimi. UX Seems to be becoming a "launching" pad career for many designers. I know quite a few who started out in UX and ended up transitioning to Product, UX Writing, Research, etc.. UX is really an "all encompassing job description that seems to be becoming more and more fragmented as time goes on (When I started UX an dUI Designers did the same thing). My best advice: learn everything when you are young: How to conduct research, wire framing, UX exercises, User testing, and UI/Design theory. another big thing people should research is accessibility standards, since they are becoming a staple in Design in general.

I like the honesty and experience you share. The best strategy to persuade people is strong evidence and data. Being a teacher, communicating with students about their grade based on the criteria is a good way for me to practice.

I'm based in Paris and I'd also like to add that it feels like everybody out here just wanna hop on the Design thinking trend and totally neglect cognitive and behavioral psychology of users and the other skillsets of a UX Designer. In most interviews, all they want to talk about is Design Thinking workshops and that just pisses me off lol.

I went to college for illustration in my Early 20's but went into finance in my early 30's as a Stockbroker on Wall Street. I always loved creating art and and creating on the computer now I'm looking to get into UI/UX design at 44 Hopefully. I think I would be able to deal with the stressful situations you spoke of. Due to my situations in the past dealing with Art Directors at various publications.

@@msrita Thank you. I am actually learning Blender because I want to work in 3D art and be involved with NFT's and the Metaverse. I always wanted to be a Visual Artist. My family is from a long-line of Visual Artist. The struggle has always been balancing a Professional life while tryjing to find lucrative opportunities in the Art. Cheers.😊❤

@@Anto_81Hi, yes the transition is very Challenging had to take two bridge jobs while building up my 3D portfolio so I'm not successful as of yet but determined. Hopefully I will be working at a digital company before 2025.

Thank you for sharing honestly! With regard to the debate/criticism part, maybe it’s because the team you’re working with was not really doing the best practices of critique. Critique is not about judging any designer’s skills or expertise, it’s about analyzing the design decisions we made and compare them against our project goals and principles, so please don’t take it personal and a very insightful book 📖 I’d love to recommend (if I may) is “Discussing Design: Improving Communication and Collaboration through Critique” By Adam & Aaron, they also talked bout how to nurture a good critique culture in organizations and team.

Hi Mimi thank you for sharing. I am transitioning into UX Design. UX is a growing field and businesses are rushing to meet the users demand. Sometimes this causes a lot of anxiety for stakeholders. Similar to when IT become a high demand field and businesses rushed to hire specialists and everyone did not know the complete ins and outs of the process but wanted to see the desired results. So I think that you have an awesome point, to make sure that you provide evidence for your design ideas so stakeholders can quickly make the connection.

I enjoyed listening to your opinions. Probably it's because I come from the Graphic Design field, but my feeling is that criticism related to UX and/or UI is easier to handle, and actually very useful because it can help you detect paths that you didn't consider before. I think most of the time, as long as your decisions are justified, your work will be accepted, of course in my experience. In comparison, when you work creating visual identity systems or other design work, sometimes there are no rational factors involved in the decision-making process of the clients or the stakeholders, and that is really difficult to handle.

Also a graphic designer who became a product designer :) the biggest headache is when someone who does not know how to create workflows tries to impose their idea of a workflow on you. Like “we don’t need to require a users middle name or their country” but I have to tell them we need that information because if we are asking for a credit card that information is required etc.

Wow! I've never actually known that UX Design is a FULL CAREER! I have done graphic design for at least a decade now and you just BLEW my mind with explaining and also with the tips/facts that help a ton, I'm sure. I happened to be looking up college classes right now as I've taken so many over time to always upgrade my knowledge and to keep in the know of the overall design and multimedia world, but this is a whole new fact for me. I happened to see a UX Design class available and wanted to know about it. Thank you so much for this! I'll be paying attention more as I have my own small business, and this sounds really interesting to learn more about.

I’m not completely set on UX design, but this video has pushed me CLOSER to it, believe it or not. I deal with imposter syndrome all the time, and I’ve been constantly learning each year since I graduated high school ten years ago. I LOVE having to debate with others and really push my ideas (or in the case, argue for the user) and I’m fairly adept at talking through things. I’m micromanaged at my current job and a lot of meetings is whatever to me, at least I’ll be doing something I’d like to do. Thank you for sharing.

The vague job description is 100% true. I applied for Product Design, then was given a Design Challenge, I presented a Design Research and Design Solution. Guess what... the founder only want to talk about Marketing Strategy. There was 0 mention about marketing in the job description LOL This happen more than once. It's either Marketing or Web Development. Pretty sure HR just copy paste those job descriptions, didn't ask the hiring manager what exactly they mean by UX Design.

I dont hate my job either but i hate the ppl around that's job, you need to follow the rule of the company and the boss or your leader. But even though I think it's a part of the process you not only learning new skill such as like UX/UI Design but also can be another thing like: debate, deal with confrontation, conflict about mindset, different pov, and i have been warning it's might be really terrify for introvert but anw it's still promising to switch my career. :D

The meeting thing was a great wake-up call. I’m not a big fan of a lot of meetings. I’m used to criticism. My proofs have to to seen by at least 5 people. Sometimes their is conflicting feedback. I did appreciate he advice about being able to justify decisions and push back from a position of strength. Thank you for sharing.

When you say, for example, that you hate confrontation and you are an introvert person. I am like that and I’m researching content to make sure I want to go into UX and or UI Design.

I feel like every day I'm preparing for a debate and trying to figure out how to get wins for our users. Never knew there was going to be SO many meetings and disagreements lol. I just have to remind myself to not get personally offended when a design doesn't get approved. But that's when the imposter syndrome kicks in 😆

I am by no means a UX/UI designer or even a graphic designer by profession, but having been an art major I always get tasked with the design projects in work and school (before I graduated) and yeah, people are VERY critical. It sucks because you feel like you made this work of art that you’re proud of and then it gets absolutely ripped apart.

That is def what I feel. I have strong ability for visualizing UI concepts but there are always loud and eloquent nosy ppl at team always have a bunch of opinions. They always say “you should think about visual hierarchy” or “You should think about user” or “minimalism is the way to go” something really obvious and what they design is a shit. Literally shit with no visual hierarchy or minimalism. Lately I feel like I should learn how to debate and stand up for myself since Im from Asian country and we dont have that kinda culture. We value humble not bluffing ..

I work as a digital artist + Email Designer (self-taught) for different agencies. I just bought a course on UX and you scared me off a bit. Not because these things you said are awful to deal with in general, but simply because they are a bit of a deal-breaker for me and I was doubting if I wanna do UX. I decided to try it out because one way or another it seems that nowadays designers need to know ALL things and be rock stars. Just an excellent video Mimi. I would like an update on your UX world going into 2023 for us fellow introverted slugs... I adapted years ago while I was a graphic designer in strategic communications. Where UX was the only way forward, yet I had a management structure that asked me for this, sending me to comment on UX benefits and successes. Yet fought UX when it came to management redesign, their own tasking nothing with myself mind you. They struggled every step of the way and in many ways are still grappling with UX. That's something I believe UX designers should be aware of just to prepare. So I became healthy being in the middle over time. I did this with good basic logic skills, research, and UX lectures. A UX designer and a new UX designer must realize you are the means in the middle, not a problem but a solution and a very gifted one. I was in a very known but tough legislated industry politically, engineering-wise, and safety-wise but isolated. My successes built slowly and I managed numerous successes in the early days of UX. I also wanted to move onward, as one gets bored, as one also becomes quite knowledgeable which is a positive benefit you will benefit from in years to come. As UX designers we soon develop a great rapport, dynamic experiences, and references to major complexities and unique problems whereby clients hugely benefit from your knowledge and experience, Keep going. I am also a highly introverted fellow slug, as well. Thanks for the video.

You've gotta fight a bit in this industry. Good to know. As for resources for getting better at being assertive, there's a channel called therapy in a nutshell. And there's also just making sure your energy is already somewhat correct as a baseline. I used to be a guy who was either too timid or overly aggressive (think bottle up and explode). I'm not usually physically intimidated (even though I probably should be in certain instances). My fear is about looking dramatic or worse - getting fired. Meditation helps. So does a certain peptide I've been using. Thanks again for your insight

My "debate" history: In the beginning, especially with young businesses (up to 3-4 years) I was willing to debate, or because why not, maybe I was wrong or because many doesn't know the topic and there's nothing wrong in it, you just explain. But then, when I started to notice the first Product Managers who think to be also UX Designers or Developers or both I started to slowly give up on that. I can also clearly see my trajectory when I started to include also evidences from other well known researches included NNgroup and stakeholders still ignoring them to the point that now when I see that there's no interest in understanding, I simply let it go while I look for another business. Too often a UX Designer is hired to be a "worker" and to comply with things that break every usability principle which downgrade design ethics, your ethic and your professionality. Who actually wanna be a UX Designer and design to break usability and/or deceive users with dark patterns.

Very good video! I agree with all of them but mostly the fifth part. The debate. Omg how infuriating it can be. However I have realized more and more that it can be less infuriating by learning how to handle the debate situation better. Your tips at the end sounds great and I think it will help to deal with the debates easier. Thank you for sharing :)

As a person who actually enjoys debating i can tell you most important have confidence, believe in your product and what it represends, what is giving.Use your knowledge and facts to succesfully defend your product. Never show your fear or insecurities. Feedback is very important to help you grow but not everyones feedback is useful or correct. If you really believe that your work is valuable they dont have a chance against you.

Meetings... Meetings... Meetings... Ask somebody who is supporting 2 products and building 1 from scratch... Meetings with stakeholders, with developers from 5-6 different teams.. most important when developer asks some smallest questions and add suggestions to change design so that their job is simplified....😢😥

These things apply to all kinds of design professions. About debating, it is skill that can be learned in a design school, because it is not always about being an introvert or extravert, it is about how you built the logic of your product and design decisions.

Just like you said, I tend to only see the positive side of UX design career from youtubers but I was really curious to also know what was the bad stuff. I still want to make a career change and be a UX designer, but knowing the good and the bad will help me be very prepared. Specially the debate stuff! I feel like I'm a very stubborn person when defending my designs, but at the same time easy to get intimidated. im kind of like a chihuahua, i guess 😅🤣Thanks for the helpful insight !!

I would love to do podcast with you and share our interview process on UX, I have had horrible ones when I first started, some that made me actually cry lol I think what I hated the most when I first started was the interviewing process. the Job Description WOW, that nailed it, for me was bizarre and still is, JD, vs What the interviewer is looking for to what it actually ends up to be! 1. In many of my job interviews, I always felt that they were looking to see if I was lying. 2. The recruiters don't have a single clue of what UX Designer is and what the JD are. 3. The 4 different Interview stages ( I normally don't accept when it takes that long) 4. Being told in the first 2 minutes of my presentation in an interview. "Sorry, I don't want to waste my time and your time" you are not what I'am looking for. 5. Being Interviews by people who have no clue what they are doing, I can go on and on and one.

All incredibly great points and I'm 100% with you, I've definitely have had moments where I see another day with no responses from companies with tears streaming down my face 😢 sadly there's just a lot of orgs out there right now still trying to grow their understanding of UX since it's a newer field.
