I never thought much of Jazzmasters until I picked one up one day and played it. Had to have one. All this time I thought they were for surfers. But the neck position has some great blues tones.

I honestly do not understand the relic craze. But I do believe a Jazzmaster is my next electric guitar. I am happy I found your channel. Thanks for these videos.

Hey Joshua you know I wouldn't relic a guitar again myself. I'm happy with this guitar and glad I went through the process though. Thanks for sharing your thoughts:) Matt.
@101Volts6 жыл бұрын
@prolet kult It's probably about having a guitar you're not afraid of playing. Then again you could just as well get a new one and play it until it looks like a relic. Also, some people do build cars that look like junk just so they aren't afraid of driving them. Look at Icon Derelicts.
@marcmistermarc6 жыл бұрын
i used to really like the relics when they first came out. The first ones I saw were the ones that Fender outsourced to a guy called Vince Cunnetto. I had a Telecaster (60's Fiesta Red) that was done by Cunnetto and it was really nice. That also had neck problems - it crowned around the 3rd to 5th fret on the bass side from what my repair guy told me... it wasn't a disaster but had to compensated with fret rework. The neck had a beautiful flame pattern - common with those early relics and I was told that they have a tendency to warp. It is possibly (combined with higher cost) the reason that Fender Custom Shop don't do them unless a special order now.

Jazzmaster vintage modified squire is the way to go ..the j mascis one is sweet
@jeffd85974 жыл бұрын
francis begbie I agree I just got one that was partially upgraded and for a whole lot less money than what this guy spent I’m gonna have a really nice guitar. thinking about putting a Mascis neck on it can get one for I think $150 from the stratosphere. I like big frets and I cannot lie! I ordered some Rose pickups. This guy didn’t know the guitar was gonna hum?
@elvinlewis42336 жыл бұрын
I want one mainly for it's very rich, jangly rhythm sounds. Both it and the Strat, are perfect for funky rhyrhm.

Another great post Matt, as far as buzz/noisey pickups go check out Kinman pickups. They make 3 different types of Jazzmaster pickups along with different magnet spreads so they can be used with Mastery, Staytrem, Tune-O-matic and Adjusto-matic bridges. Also check out Brett Kingman's channel on KZfaq as he has demo's of these pickups on some of his Jazzmaster guitars - no buzz no noise. J Mascis is even using Kinman pickups in a couple of his Jazzmaster guitars, Marshall stack at full tilt along with a huge pedalboard, he needs a bit of quite every now and then. Cheers Rob.

Hey I watch Brett Kingman's channel - I'll check out his video with those pups. Thanks for the heads up!

G'day Matt. I've not gone down the stainless fret path yet, hence the question. I have been down the MJT track and built up a strat. Mark does very nice work. The hardest part I found was trying to explain in an email every aspect of how a guitar should look and more important, how it should feel. We got there in the end. Like you it was worth the wait. Ask Brenden about the " Brencaster" I'm sure he will tell you all about it. Keep up the great videos mate.
@TONEonline7 жыл бұрын
Sir Rattles I know they get some mixed reviews but I like the feel of stainless frets. I've got drop in to see Brenden soon so I'll ask him:) Have a good weekend 👍

Very nice looking guitar. I love the Lake placid blue. I have five Jazzmasters 61,65, MIJ, Partsmaster and a Musima. On three I have Musikraft necks. Never had a problem. I did have a Warmouth neck warp in the same way as yours did. I would recommend using a Staytrem arm and am fairly sure that Curtis Novak makes noiseless pickups. I have a set from a guy called Manlius. Apart from that, you have put together a wonderful guitar.
@TONEonline7 жыл бұрын
Hey Luke now that's a nice collection of JM's! Curtis Novak does do a hum cancelling pickup I think but from memory it's a humbucker? I'm using my SG for the ambient electronic stuff and it sounds amazing. I rehearsed with my band on the weekend and the hum was not a concern so I'll stick with the standard CN pups for the present as build has drained my funds:) The Staytrem arm is a good idea as nothing annoys me more than loose tremolo arms. Cheers mate Matt.

You mentioned those pickups are somewhat warm which probably pair nicely with the SS frets. Do you think SS would be too bright with regular single coils? I'm getting ready to order my tele neck from musikraft and I'm leaning toward EVO frets.
@daveandrew70145 жыл бұрын
Is that Curtis Novak JM-Fat on the bridge or is it hotter wound JM-V? As I understand Curtis winds the JM-V the same for the neck and bridge.
@musicmatty674 жыл бұрын
Very nice guitar but did you say there's no truss rod in the neck??😯 You and I both went the custom-build route for the Jazzmaster. I see you and I both addressed the inherent bridge problem in different ways.. You went with a Mastery Bridge which is an excellent choice and I stayed away from the vibrato bar and went with a Schaller roller Bridge.. this bridge also allows for adjusted string spacing which is really cool along with regular intonation. You chose L. Fralin pickups and I went with the Seymour Duncan Antiquity II. For the neck I went with Warmoth and the compound radius neck..10-14. These Jazzmaster guitars are really cool looking.. fun to play and they sound incredible.. I'm sure you would agree🤠
@henrystewart38824 жыл бұрын
that thing is so cool!! however it hurts my wallet just looking at it, those Mastery bridges and MJT finishes are top dollar

Hey I noticed your pickups are fairly low I’m just curious on why you did that
@TheDistortions4 жыл бұрын
grab some clip leads and experiment with grounding. you may discover the hum issue. in my case, it turned out to be the graphtech saddles that the person who build my jazzmaster installed. he failed to ground the strings/bridge properly. running a clip lead from the tremelo tailpiece to the metal portion of the bridge grounds the strings and takes all the hum away. i still need to figure out a soldering location and do a permanent fix, but i'll get to that next time i have the strings off and will lift the pickguard.

Hi I just picked up what seems to be a brand new Jazzmaster at the pawn shop in town. It was expensive but I fell right in love with it. I have a question as the action is so good and low and the stainless steel frets are not very tall what string gages are you running? It seems the strings on this may be med light. But I'e gotten to like a thicker gage. Would a thicker gage cause any buzzing?
@TONEonline6 жыл бұрын
Jbeliski hey I have 11’s on mine... a lot of people use that gauge for Jazzmasters
@Jbeliski6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! this guitar is just a beast of an instrument. I've wanted a Strat for so long and all of a sudden out of the blue I have this Jazzmaster but I think I made the right choice for myself. It goes from super clean to really deep heavy and dirty with perfect tremolo. Everything I want.
@BCTGuitarPlayer7 жыл бұрын
Matt, super! I own 3 Jazzys. On one I installed Joe Bardens on it. Plus a Strat with JBs. At some point, Matt, regardless of the model: Les Paul, Jazz, Strat...whatever, pay the extra money for set of Bardens. They're crazy expensive but worth every bloomin' cent. That 1/4 tiger neck is wonderful. I have yet to assemble my flower pattern gold leafed Jazz body (which I leafed myself) with a 5A maple neck. If you'd like to see it, I'll email a couple pictures pics to you. I've had all the 1965 RI parts ready to go for over two years, but it's still in a box. Rediculous...I've got to get it completed but I have more irons in the fire than a Texas cattlemen. Scotty
@TONEonline7 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott yes please send me some pics... I'll check out th Barden pups I don't know too much about them. I've got Nocaster Ron Ellis pups in my Danocaster and they are sensational too:) Matt.
@pearloidstrat7 жыл бұрын
TONE I've used lots of different Jazzmaster pickups including the Bardens, which sound very good and have no noise in every possible combination. But to me, they stray away too much from that beautiful traditional Jazzmaster tone. I've been using Kinman Fatmaster pickups for a few years now, which are completely noiseless while preserving that lovely vintage Jazzmaster tone. They sound lovely, as good or better than any single coil Jazzmaster pickups I've used. I really don't understand why not every Jazzmaster player is using them.
@BCTGuitarPlayer7 жыл бұрын
pearloidstrat: I'll keep that in mind because I STILL haven't assembled the gold leaf Flowercaster that I mentioned. I realize the 65 RI pups will be noisy, so I'll seriously considering it. Trouble is I'll never get what I paid for them, even though unused. As far as the Bardens, I chose them because I'm more of a rock player. In the past, lots of jazz and even surf, but that was the 80s and into everything!

Would you mind sharing what your neck specs were for this build?
@davidkieltyka97 жыл бұрын
Re. JM hum: it can be tricky because the pickups are sensitive (or "temperamental" if they're annoying you) and so you can't put too much shielding in the guitar without deadening tone. I'm always careful about finding the quietest orientation relative to my amp and then staying there. Maybe the best solution is to build a Faraday cage! :)
@TONEonline7 жыл бұрын
A Faraday cage is necessary for ambient guitar stuff on a JM. I think the big issue is my Blackstar HT-1 all tube practice amp at home. It does something to the pups to make them hum. I was playing it through my Supro Black Magick and it was much much better.
@Neil-Aspinall7 жыл бұрын
The tone is superb and is the sound in my head. Out of interest what did this project end up costing you, seems expensive?
@TONEonline7 жыл бұрын
Sorry Neil I missed your message and just saw it. All up the guitar cost me around $2700 Australian dollars. Matt
@lueyteledeluxe74575 жыл бұрын
@@TONEonline You know, I'm Australian, and while $2700 is definitely in the "top shelf " category, it is by no means by any gross sort of margin. What I mean to say is ...he got a great instrument for the price. If I could be assured that quality, tailored, or chosen from, to my best specs, I would sign away the next 3 . grand I get to spend on guitar stuff - right away! Wasn't sure about the pearloid guard at first... I thought," is it too flashy??".. But then I started telling myself "how's it different from my very own lake placid b strat with custom pearloid guard?"...Answer?"It isn't!!" ... And true to God! I can honestly say I love that guitar (the JM) now! By the end of that video, I went from turning my nose up to it, just a tiny little bit.!.. to absolutely loving it!! It's a beautiful instrument, both sonically as well as aesthetically. And with this guy's testament as to its playability, this guitar looks like a Number One Hit to me !! 😀👍

Interesting that you mentioned pickup noise. I recall reading years ago in a Fender history that one of the initial complaints about the Jazzmaster was that "the pickups buzzed like a nest of angry hornets". Lovely looking and sounding guitar, though. Congratulations.
@TONEonline7 жыл бұрын
Haha yes they can be a bit noisy at times but sometimes they are quiet too... but yes it's a JM thing. Thanks for watching! Matt.

How did you go getting the rosewood sent over with cities?
@TONEonline7 жыл бұрын
It was taking so long trying to get Cites paperwork that in the end I told MJT to just send it and I risked having it seized. CITES and Rosewood is a nightmare now!
@thecaveofthedead6 жыл бұрын
Seriously man. If your SG's not staying in tune with the Maestro, you need to get the nut looked at. There's nothing stopping a Maestro holding great tune. 99% of the time it's a nut that sticks and the other 1% it's the bridge. I can dive bomb on my SG and it takes ages to lose tune.
@giordanorivolta40123 жыл бұрын
Actually Jazzmaster (and Telecaster) is the weapon of choice of a pletora of ambient musician, Jazzmaster-ambient is almost a cliché

matt can you explain to me from your point of view why someone would "RELIC" a guitar? Why don't you just play it and it will wear from use and just enjoy it as is? Why put dings and scratches in it and wear the fretboard out in places where you might not even play in?
@TONEonline7 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike yeah good question... I guess I do like the aesthetic of a nicely relic'd guitar but also the feel and by this I especially mean the neck. That's what I was alluding to with MJT making the neck look old but feel new. But I also get that is kinda cheating too:)
@mike2dg7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. What do you mean about the feel of the neck? I bought my 1st guitar last year (strat) and it has a smooth neck, do you mean that from a couple of years of wear it will feel smoother?

@TONEonline7 жыл бұрын
Haha I get that... amazing that we all apparently perceive sound differently. What's your axe of choice?
@janedoe35707 жыл бұрын
My axe of Choice is an ES-335, I actually like the Epiphone Sheraton II more than the Gibson because it holds its tuning better and it's made out of maple which makes a stronger neck than Mahogany so you mod a Sheraton I think it's better but most would disagree lol
@TONEonline7 жыл бұрын
I love 335's very nice choice... I'd love to own one someday:)
