This video is a summary of what I learned recording using a Yamaha THR 30II as my whole rig. (Interface, amps and monitor.) I was interested to see what this little amp was capable of and upon reflection, there were a few really important lessons that came out of my little experiment.

I just bought a new Fender AM Pro II and the Yamaha Trhii. For me it was about finding the fun in playing guitar again. I realised I hated having cables everywhere and digging out everything required to use my amps and electric (which used to be a line 6 Variax (heavy & cumbersome)). Now I play wirelessly using the Yamaha and a line6 relay thing. It’s made it easier to just play again. Anyway - I loved your video and would definitely like to see more of these kind of videos again. Can definitely relate to having too much gear and not ever creating stuff and really learned something from your workflow

That's awesome to hear that you're finding more time to play with that setup. That's what it's all about. I agree, less cables the better!

@@minimalistmusician I wonder if you can help me. I bought the TRH in part because I thought I could record a dry and wet signal. I queried it with Yamaha and they said it in fact wasn’t possible to do. Yet I’m sure I’ve achieved it before but don’t remember how. I have also seen a dry signal option in the THR app. Are you able to tell me if it’s possible to record both dry and wet and how? Is it possible to do them at the same time? I use Logic. Thank you

@@chris60036 I can't think of a way unless you just use an a/b box and split off into an interface. If I can come up with anything I'll let you know.

@@minimalistmusician Hi, if i were to use a PRS hollow body with the piezo is it possible to use the one acoustic version amp and yet still switching the electric or buying the other way round ? I ask this because the hollow body is not fully acoustic is it, if you see what i mean?

Awesome video! Ive had the THR30ii for 6 months and done a bunch of Tik Toks with just micing the amp with a good microphone.

Any chance you could do a walkthrough on getting started with the THR/Cubase? I've had this thing for like 4 years and every time I try to get it set up I end up watching tutorials in spanish from like 9 years ago on outdated software lol.

This is my only amp. I'm saving for a Roland JC-120. To hell with the "tubes are the only way" mentality. THR-30II gets it done for everything up to a small stage. It's hard to find a bad sound with this thing. My girlfriend is super into minimalism and I know I'm echoing all the 0-3-5 reviews but she loves it sitting around in the house. Dig your style man, subscribed and looking into your other stuff.

Very helpful observations...Thanks! I'm expecting my THR 30II Monday. And I'm cutting back my effects dependency to some crunch, some reverb, good EQ and some compression and my pedals to none. I'd be interested in how you would approach using just the THR, CuBase (the DAW included by Yamaha) and a Zoom R8 multitrack recorder. My production needs are modest: practice and demo tracks. I think your mindset for this is spot on.

Does your iPhone have Lightning or USB-C? If it has USB-C, you can just use a USB-B (at amp) to USB-C (at phone). For Lightning, you'll need to buy a "Camera Adapter" - Lightning out from phone to both USB and Lightning at the other end.

I totally agree with all you said. I also often find myself paralyzed by all the options my gear provides. I have some really high end tube amps and although they might sound a touch better on their own when recorded the traditional way, this firstly kind of feels like diminishing returns when put in a mix compared to my THRII and secondly in comparison is much more of a hassle. What I found works best for me is recording the THR II 30 through the TRS line outs instead of the USB. This way I can monitor the sound directly through my UA Apollo Interface going straight to my monitors without any latence plus I can make use of the amazing effects UA console provides (and we are back to overwhelming options 😆 - seriously though, I‘m just using the reverbs there, because I like them better than the ones on the THRII). Anyways, great content man, I subscribed and am looking forward for more. Christopher

Thanks Christopher! I agree with you and would go the line out into the apollo route too but for the sake of the video just wanted to see how far I could get with the amp alone and was pretty impressed. Cheers

Thanks appreciate it. I'm not an Ableton user so I don't know for sure. All I can suggest is make sure you have all the most recent updates for everything and I'd imagine you should just be able to pick it from where you choose your interfaces in audio settings

Hi! Do you still use the power supply for the THR when it's connected to a PC/laptop? Or will it get the power from the PC/Laptop directly?
@minimalistmusician
@minimalistmusician 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you need the power supply. Bus power couldn't handle that. They are battery powered amps though so you can opt to just use the battery if it's charged I believe.

Yep these were early days getting used to talking to the camera so lots of cuts that weren't hidden well but it's all about just getting started even when things aren't perfect. This was about the 5th video edit I had ever done. Here in Canada it's completely acceptable to wear a Tuque and T shirt in the winter... hell even in the summer sometimes.

Would it be possible to run the Yamaha thr30 off of a solar panel? I like remote locations.
@minimalistmusician
@minimalistmusician 2 жыл бұрын
That's a really cool idea! It is battery powered already so you might be able to get enough juice off of one charge for a trip. You could always just recharge the battery with some sort of a power bank that supports AC charging. Let me know how you make out

I really need your help!! have a Yamaha thr10x and have decided i want to make some KZfaq videos of me playing it with maybe a drumtrak. Can you please direct me on what kind of laptop i need? Obviously it needs a webcam and I think i need cubase…im just a newbie when it comes to recording. Is it as simple as plugging the amp into the laptop?Can you kindly help an old guitarist get started with these tools? Thanks so much!
@minimalistmusician
@minimalistmusician 2 жыл бұрын
Hey great to hear you're interested in making videos. The amp would work as your interface so you would just need a laptop for recording audio in any DAW you like (Cubase, Logic, Garagband, Pro Tools etc...) You could use the webcam or your phone to get started and would just need a video editing program. If you'd like to book a consulting session it's something I offer and you can reach me at erictreleavenmusic@gmail.com. All the best!

@@Boogieplex Yeah there are a lot of options for sure. I really think the best thing going at an entry level price is the macbook air with the m1 chip.
