I'm delighted that my older brother has expressed an interest in playing ukulele. The one piece of advice I'd give him, and anyone else new to the uke is: It's not competitive, it's not a race. Find your own space and experiment with your favourite songs. Start simple and gently. Once again, it's not a competition, so enjoy!

I just stumbled over this video and have used these ideas a lot in other areas of my life. I learned and used the "slow is smooth & smooth is fast" mantra first when I started driving and teaching how to drive race cars. A corollary to this is "fast before smooth leads to disaster". Clearly not as critical playing a ukulele as in a car but brings home the lesson.

one more tip: learn a simple song and try to master it. In the video song he says he learned the fun song from sponge bob.( which is a good beginner song cause its 3 cords) Find a song that's like 2-4 cords and try to get it down. It'll give you a big confidence boost if you can play a song or part of a song and it will help you advance it will help you getting the muscle memory, it will help you learn the cord, and jump to the cord you need to play, and you will get you more confidence to move forward. I've just started but its helped me.

Awesome video! I love the idea of showing more natural flaws in tutorial videos. I know when Steven Warren has kept a few little mess ups in a tutorial, and then fixes them, I find it helps me connect with the tutorial and teacher in a different way. It helps humanize the people we only get to see through our screens and, as someone who is innately a perfectionist, helps me to be okay with showing my mistakes when I make my own videos for the monthly challenges :)

Matt I've learnt Spanish Romance yesterday, I can play decently but there is bit in melody B with tricky chords which I'm not familiar ithat ruins the steadiness of the playing. Your tip of slowing down the whole song was so simple and so perfect 👌. Thank you man!

Well. . . . #2 tucking the neck into the web can often be a "right" grip on a uke but guitar-style "thumbover" fretting is a terrible habit because it will often leave your hands in a bad position for other chords. The Uke Giddess gave us 4 fingers to fret with, 4 fingers to pluck with, and put 4 strings on a uke. The goddess has spoken!

😁 I latched onto the "just go for it" mentality early on at least. It made me 100% more annoying to deal with though, lmao! (sorry again Andrew! 💖 I miss being premium.) I'm currently working on my version of improvising, which is codename for me changing people's arrangements to definitely be my own. 😆 Not to the song's benefit probably but, hey.
