This video is sooo accurate, I’m not necessarily trying to a UX researcher however I am pursuing to becoming a product designer. I have a background in cs and I thought I wanted to be a software engineer which turned into full stack web developer which turned into front end web developer which turned into uiux developer which finally turned into product designer. I knew I was into development but it’s been such a pain staking process of elimination which I’ve discovered what I genuinely liked and disliked about those roles. It’s still taking forever while trying balance working but like you said I feel it’s close. I guess I would ask for a video to cover over what would be a minimum standard of ux research to know and how to implement for a product designer or uiux designer

Hello Kevin, I am Jake from Taiwan and I started following your videos 2 months ago. It’s really helpful and you are indeed my KZfaq mentor. The UX environment in Taiwan is definitely similar to US and might be more difficult. I am going to start my first job as project management after I attend and rejected by few UX researcher jobs, don’t blame me it is really difficult to even find a job doing “real” UX researcher in Taiwan lol. I am not giving up on it just need to gain some experience and I think the role could be helpful to me in the future. I have to say thank you for your sharing it really help me a lot.

@@zerotoux The UX certificate was made of nine 7-week courses and one 7-16 week course. My classes did a great job on teaching the importance of UX, ethical standards of human research, different types of research (qual and quan), and we got CITI certifications. These were all important in establishing some foundational knowledge about UX. However, our course material hardly included actual industry practices or software. Once my interest was peaked and I started watching KZfaq videos to learn more, I realized that I wasn't learning about specific technical skills or practices. All we did for our UX projects were interviews and various levels of participant observations. Other coursework included reading ethnographic material, writing discussion posts, practicing informed consent, practicing research, organizing and interpreting data, writing "job-to-be-done's", and customer journey mapping, empathy mapping... We weren't introduced to other valuable processes (card sorts, presenting data effectively, etc.) and tests (i.e. t-test, chi-square test, etc.). That's just what I have on the top of my head. I would have to revisit my coursework to go into more detail, which I can do if you'd like :)

Hi Kevin, you have no idea how much I'm enjoying your videos, very helpful and inspirational. I have read tons of comments from some of your videos and I find interesting that I haven't found any hospitality people with experience in the operation (restaurant, front desk for example), do you know people in that field that made a career transition to UXR? I recently found out about the UXR career since I had to work with some developers that created an app for restaurants reservations and food ordering within the hotel, I found it very difficult to use and not many people are using it. I think there is so much that can be improved that I will make this my first project. Thank you for the videos and all the resources that you share with us, I'm glad there is a commission for you when anybody purchase through your links, you deserve a raise! Thanks bud.

this video really put things into perspective. i had my first major UX interview a few weeks. i was runner up. Other person got the job because they knew how to handle stakeholders. Reflecting on it, 30% focused on research skills. They gave tasks but mainly asked how i would negotiate it with limited resources and demanding/unpredictable. i was scrambling. still feel a little hopeless because i dont know how to get my foot in the door to be able to have these experiences. They were right about me being too clean.

I'm a total newbie when it comes to design,I find it very funny that in my mind I have a picture of what I want to design or where to gain inspiration from.But the tool I'm using (figma) just doesn't allow for me to express my creativity and though process.I'm finding it very hard to use Figma. A video on figma,Adobe XD would do,or any other tool would be much appreciated.Great content though,inspiring!
@zerotoux

I've often heard designers say the same, because product design is different from being a creative designer. And tbh when you're working on a product team, you will have to work within some material or base UI components, so I feel ya there. BUT!! I'm not a designer! So I don't use Figma or Sketch in my day to day as a researcher. However I can say this: consider starting your creative process using good ol' pen and paper and then translate that into Figma :) I think you'll find a lot more liberty with the pen and pad first

Hey Kevin! Just came across your channel today and watched this video. I've acquired UX education and am able to do beginner UX work although I have a severe case of impostor syndrome. I always feel like the odd one out in a group, in the sense that everyone knows what to do and how to do it and I'm the only one who's clueless and just going with the flow. This in turn leads to great anxiety and terrible face to face sessions with clients. What's your advice on how I can solve this issue?

I am currently seeking UX internships as a graduate student and find your videos really helpful, will def keep watching :) Most of my peers in school are wanting to become designers but I am a researcher at heart. However, some career coaches told me to keep the doors open to UX designer jobs as well because it's better than not getting any offers... I was wondering what you think of this problem? As someone who is new to the field without any industry experience, should I be super clear and just pursue researcher jobs? Or should I be more open? Thanks!

Hi Kevin I graduated with an associates in Graphic Design this past May. I plan to go to a 4 yr school for UX Design. I’ve always been interested in going into the technology field but I’m at that stage where I’m second guessing myself and terrified of making a “wrong” decision because I’m young and I have older people telling me that I should change my career field and I don’t want to disregard all the time I’ve spent. Do you think I have a shot at this?
@zerotoux
@zerotoux 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Trey, I'm not sure what those "older" people are saying, but if you want to use your design knowledge in the tech field, UX design would be perfect for you. You are the one who knows best!! Trust me, all my life my parents have been telling me to get a real job, like doctor or lawyer, so I wasted all my time studying for things I knew I didn't even want to do (although the knowledge did help me). Don't be like me! If UX is what you want to do, it's a great field and there's a huge market for talent
