Same. I’ve never been comfortable with my math, but I took Precal and did fairly good in freshman year of college. I used to feel like I had good logical skills since I played chess in highschool. When I took calculus 1 I wasn’t really doing the work, I wasn’t studying at all, and then I stopped attending class altogether. At the end of the semester the professor whom saw potential in me gave me another opportunity to complete the course and take the final test which was 70% of the class grade since it was a departmental final. I had over 4 months to prepare for the test and complete the remaining assignments for the course but I didn’t do anything because I thought I suck at math and wouldn’t be able to pass the test. I almost dropped out of college at that point, but I decided to continue and changed my major from computer science to healthcare administration. I graduated last year in may and to this day that is my biggest regret, that I didn’t work hard enough and goofed around, and I didn’t chase after my dreams. Always believe that you can and you will, that’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned from all of this.

@@WarmNapkin I switched majors two months ago from mathematics and am really excited. Everybody wants to switch to it though so the competition to get in is getting tighter. My school requires a 3.5 GPA between 6 prereq classes before you can do CS. Thankfully I was raising my GPA for the last 4 years from a 3.0 to a 3.53 so I switched just in time to finally feel like I have my place here. I'm incredibly smart, but with my ADHD and a lack of helpful hints, I starred college with a rocky start.

I appreciated this so much. The problem I'm having is knowing where to focus. I am a jack of all trades when it comes to most things I do and I feel so overwhelmed looking at job descriptions that require different skills all relating to computer science. There have been a couple things that I really enjoyed, but they didn't relate to coding as much which makes me question if this was right for me. All I can do is continue practicing in areas that interest me and look for a job that asks for that.

Things I should have known when entering college - Major in software engineering or some other computing field instead of Chemistry - Computing fields are so accessible and can be practiced anywhere (since I owned a laptop), unlike Chemical equipment - Coding on a regular basis is more enjoyable than I had expected - Optimize code while you can - you will run it over and over and over, so don't leave resource hungry loops or processes in there I've seen your second point a lot more on the job than in my personal apps. It can take over a couple hours to debug an issue, while actually modifying the code to fix the root cause takes maybe three minutes. Then, since my code is running against an app that is still in development, changes to that along the way break some of my tests and it's anyone's guess what gets deprecated and how to discover the refactoring needed.

I’m kinda undecided on my major, I’ve thought about optometry but I don’t want to do 8 years of school. Like especially with jobs and stuff after graduating, are you able to still enjoy or have free time?
@adebs
@adebs 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely! There are so many other career paths besides software engineering with a CS degree. I discuss some of them in my 'Why You Should Major in Computer Science" video, but some of them are product manager, data scientist, and UX/UI designer. A degree in CS opens up so many doors, and if you haven't taken a coding class yet, I'd recommend taking one just to see how you like it!

CIS or IT program they foucus on Network and cybersecurity administraion such as Cisco networking, windows/linux server best tools to learn these courses are Cisco packet tracer and VM workstation also CIS student they take application programming classes such as Html/CSS, java script, SQL and OOP with python or C#. If your are a beginner I highly recommend to start with basics of Computer networking, clouds and hardware/operating systems. If you wanna start with programming I recommand to start with basic python and SQL using Microsoft Visual Studio Code editor.

No it’s super common to go into CS without any programming experience 🤗 I usually took 15-16 credits a a semester. I did have a job for 2 semesters, and was involved in other activities at the same time! I wouldn’t say I had hardly any free time, but finding the balance between school, social life, and activities is something everyone has to go through in college - I wouldn’t say it’s just unique to CS majors! Don’t let the thought of not having any free time stress you out, you got it! 🤗

“I know nothing about computers or CS!” “I’m going to major in CS!” Why do people do things they aren’t passionate about. As they say, find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. I guess finances are more important than your mental health though.
