Hey there! You start to specialize in your Master's year. Requirements to qualify for honours (@UCT specifically and I believe generally): The minimum requirement is a Bachelor's degree with a major in Psychology. All candidates are carefully considered and the screening process takes account not only of the total academic record, but also allows for consideration of individual cases in terms of the two criteria listed below. 1. Academic performance - A bachelor's degree with a major in Psychology (or equivalent number of modules in Psychology). As a general guideline, an upper second class pass in third-year level Psychology is a basic requirement. In addition, the general level of the entire academic transcript is considered, as well as the award of distinctions, honours and bursaries. Consistency in academic performance is important. 2. Equity - In line with the UCT mission of equity and excellence, the selection committee will deliberately seek to ensure that the class will reflect the diversity of talent available in the country. Other achievements, such as previous employment, extra-curricular activities and similar activities do not play a role in the selection process.

@@umzulugaming1941 Yes, it is harder than many other fields like engineering, law or medicine. · It makes a difference if you have a higher degree and the field you specialize in. However, having a psychology degree is also very helpful for other work fields e.g marketing, media and advertising; human resources and communication careers etc., So it's really about seeing where your skills are needed.

Hi there! For UCT specifically, I believe that Having English is important as well as at least 50% in pure maths. However, if you're doing maths literacy you can still study psychology but you are then strongly encouraged to add an extra year to your degree and do a maths course in your first year, which is what I did :)

Hey! Im glad you enjoyed it :) . Yes, so the essays have the same structure as a general essay (intro, body, conclusion). However, it involves referencing. In the Psych Department we use the American Psychological Association 7th edition (APA) referencing to credit the authors and sources from which we found the information that we have written in our essays. so I'm not studying psychology at uni yet I just study the subject in school, so from what I've learned so far, psychology is the study of mental processes, experiences, and behavior. It studies development, mental processes, psychological disorders, phenomenon, the human brain, and many many more! There are different branches of psychology - cognitive, developmental, social, cultural, clinical or counseling, industrial or organizational, educational psychology, etc! Hi Avela! So to become a research Psychologist you'd need to: 1. Get your undergraduate degree with one of your majors being Psychology (this normally takes 3 years). 2. Do your honours in Psychology (1-year programme). 3. Do a Masters in Psychological Research ( 2 years) 4. Then you need to complete an appropriate practicum (1 year). So it's 6 years of study and 1-year practicum. It's a long road but definitely achievable!

Hi there! To practice as a Psychiatrist, you need to have a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBChB), followed by a Masters in Medicine, specialising in Psychiatry. Prospective students also need to be registered with the HPCSA.

A pass mark is 50%

@@dumisamaneli6271 No problem! You can do any subjects really, but make sure to have English and Pure maths. However, if you feel that pure maths is not for you, you can take maths Literacy but then you will be encouraged to extend your degree by 1 year and do a maths course in your first year that will give you a good foundation for statistics in psychology. If you do extend your degree, you would then start your psychology courses in your second year :). I believe that taking Life sciences/ Biology would be advantages because in psychology you also learn about the brain and its cognitive functioning. So having some kind of basic knowledge about these process may be helpful. But, this is not compulsory :). In highschool I took: History, Drama, Life sciences, Dance studies and Maths Literacy, and the basics: English, Afrikaans and Life orientation. Hope this helps :)

As regards to difficulty, it wasn't difficult i would say. You just have to keep at it you know. Practise and asking questions is the only way to Go🙌. The statistics is not like pure maths, its more like maths lit but on the computor 😅 with specific formulas that are actually alot like maths lit. Also the tutors are also so helpful! So i believe that you will be just fine if you do decide to follow through ☺🙌
