I tend to leave proxmox mostly vanilla. I change out my interfaces for a bridge, and run updates, but that's most of it

You should passthrough with device-id, not the sda naming, as that can change randomly, and totally mess up your setup.

When passing physical media through to a VM. Especially for a NAS. I recommend enabling the iothread option. This gives them their own thread instead of using the Proxmox event loop. Think it's enabled by default when using the UI.

Or HDD passthrough, it may be better to pass through /dev/disk/by-id/

Just installed Proxmox 8.1.3 on an ACEPC PicoBox Mini PC following this video, mostly. Works well. Even RDP into the ubuntu desktop looks nice. Probably time to move the PicoBox off my cluttered desk to the cabinet.

One thing I love about ProxMox is that it runs Debian under the hood giving you flexibility to add and modify features such as hardware pass-through. Plus if you know your way around Linux you can fix issues as well. There is one feature I haven't explored yet is SDN. This is now fully baked in version 8.1.

amd_iommu=on is actually invalid (and therefore ignored) because it is on by default for AMD systems. You should still use iommu=pt however.

Thank you for sharing this. I am working on my first Proxmox server following your advice. Would you recommend installing a VM or a Container on a physically different SSD than the system disk which is in my case a 500gb nvme? Sorry, the last bit HDD pass thru doesnt work for me. nano says /etc/pve/ is no file but a directorty....

Great video, thanks for the information. One question, can proxmox 8.1.3 have two virtual machines(truenas scale using a PLEX application and jellyfin installed as a virtual machine) share a hard drive(s) that is on a smb share? Would I need to use pcie sata adapter or can I identify the hard drives by there serial numbers in the configuration files? Thanks.

This was amazing. I just built an Epyc 7302P system on a ROMED8-2T motherboard. 2 NVME 1 TB drives. 1 Samsung SSD. 6x12TB HDDs. 128GB ram. Just got Proxmox running and going to install TrueNAS scale in raidz2 on it next. Some issues I've been running into is Proxmox dropping its connection from time to time. Has that happened to you? I wonder if it has to do with the IPMI stuff running on my server.

One of the reasons I like Proxmox is the ability to cluster hosts together and "migrate" containers and VMs from one host to another. Passing through a hard disk like you show here would lock a system to the host with that disk and prevent migration. So, not sure if I would come across a good reason to do that. Something to keep in mind when doing that kind of thing.

Great video 👍 8:08 -- With a UEFI-booted machine, an alternative for enabling IOMMU is: (1) nano /etc/kernel/cmdline, and (2) proxmox-boot-tool refresh. 13:00 -- OEM installation for manufacturers, that is a great tip, thank you. 17:44 -- nano /etc/pve/qemu-server/100.conf for passing through a storage device directly to VM 100.

So I run a 3 node cluster, and always always always, I take my interfaces and make a new bond interface, set my ip address for that, and add all my network interfaces to that bond. That becomes my primary interface for the device. Because I'm using older hardware, this has become habit to protect me when i have an interface that gets overwhelmed or stops working. That way, I can add on a new 2.5g usb network card without worrying about losing management connectivity, I can always have my onboard available as backup, and I have my wol options for my on-board network interface, since wol uses Mac address to send the magic packet.

awesome video dude, as a Proxmox noob this helped. However, for the Disks, I have a spare 2Tb (nvme0n1) which I wiped successfully. I have another (nvme1n1) which has partitions (BIOS boot, EFI, LVM) which I cant wipe - this is a 1Tb and I presume my Proxmox disk. As this is 1Tb, how do I partition it so I can use most of the space for storage? Did I miss something during the install process?

For piKVM, you need to change the EDID for the HDMI config, as that can/will help with funky systems.

great video this proxmox is new for me and it has alot of features very interesting. one quick question how can i have proxmox work in a computer with 2 nick cards. i will like to have one to internal use like local ip and the other interface be able to communicate with the internet? i know the first time we install it we can setup the web interface ip address but in my case i have dhcp, i dont manage the ips so the only profile i have is the local ip address but it does not provide me internet access.

At minute 9:10, when you are monitoring it thru your KVM, is that software that lets you see a machine that isn't booted yet? If so, what is the software that allows it? I think I'm somewhat behind the curve on that.

i would liek to see some network setup like setting up openwrt with two physical nics on host , or somethign like pihole , if possible cover something in that respect for next one in the series also if possible can we have a playlist because somethign tells me there is a lot more content potential on proxmox stuff we coudl se ahead so playlist to organise proxmox xontent would be nice 👌 Thanks for sharing this one, it was helpful indeed. I'm a newbie on Proxmox and i've been trying to install a Emby/Jellyfin server on a vm, but i really can't figure how this can see my movies and shows library available on the NAS. Samba is the way i guess, but can's acomplish without help! Can you please help me?

I prefer to use a cloud-init image for developing the iso. And there are ways to inject packages into the iso such as the agent which is not natively in the cloud init iso image, without running or logging into the image.

Since proxmox is Debian based, zram-tools and log2ram goes a VERY long way in reducing writes to the EMMC/USB/SD card.

I appreciate your detail when you do your video here on Proxmox, but you went through the network part kinda fast and that is the area I have questions about. I installed Proxmox on my Dell 5675 and I defaulted to the 1gb onboard network connection. I have since purchased a 2.5gb PCI card and also have an Anker USB C to 2.5gb network adapter and would like to use either on of these to run 2.5gb speed and I have a Unifi 10gb switch to use. So how can I make my Proxmox server just recognize either the 2.5 PCI card or the USB C network adapter? If you have any videos that cover this I would love to see them . I would really like to make 1 or 2 of these 2.5gb network adapters to be available to the HOST and thereby they would be available to each VM Thanks Jim

in the network section, edit vmbr0 section and replace the bridge ports from the current adaptor (i.e. enp2s0) to your 2.5 gpe adaptor and apply settings

Hello, all! If you want not to access a storage, you can toggle "Enabled" off, then the storage will not be available for the VM's/LXC"s, but all the other configs for that particular storage stay the same.

QUESTION: If my PC is limited to 12 gigs of Ram (4bg soldered onboard and 1 slot open for a stick of ram but 8 gb is the max) but I accidentally purchased a 16 gb stick and the desktop wont boot with the 16gb stick in. But I am able to boot up 1st and then install the 16 gb stick but the system doesn't use the 16 gb but it does get recognized in the device manager it's installed. If I use proxmox would I be able to utilize all 16gb (20 gb of ram)?

your bios need to be updated possibly, the bios needs to be able to pick up the ram size for it to be reconized

No. But I believe you can make virtual drives on the physical drive.

If you could the drive would end up corrupted. Re: TrueNas is great but you may not need that. You can create a turnkey samba server from a container template Give it some storage and have a NAS for very little memory or overhead compared to a full truenas VM. Just depends on your needs. For most home networks it's overkill. but if you go the CPU/memory and disks it's cool.

@@donaldwilliams6821 i just ended creating a lxc with debian, and just install smb package to make the share (i only is that when i want to connect when i'a on my pc), i can mount the storage from proxmox shell to the container (sonarr,jellyfin, lidarr, navidrome etc) so in my case no need of omv,truenas or anything that complex

Rather than installing desktop versions of Linux distributions, you're better just starting your VMs with pre-made cloud images. No installing required :)

Please state what level of experience you are expecting in your audience. This is NOT for beginners. Why do you bother to explain this in a way that experienced users probably already know how to do? This seems pointless.

Yeah and even then I wouldn't recommend this for anyone. The template section is bassackwards and would be better served with something like cloud-init for example. He kept talking about EMMC without any context as well.
