This list of “things that don’t matter in SEO” aren’t exactly SEO myths and they aren’t necessarily bad practices. They’re mostly things that people obsess and worry over when they really don’t matter in terms of improving your Google rankings.
And the reason this occurs is because some blog posts or videos recommend these things as advice when in fact, these are not the things that are going to move the needle in your SEO rankings.
What are these things that don’t matter? They are:
► LSI Keywords
► Achieving a content score in a content optimization tool or getting a green light with Yoast’s WordPress plugin
► Word count
► Exact match domains
► Social signals
You’ll also learn what you should be focusing on in order to improve your SEO.

Great useful information. But i don't like that your conclusion is based on what Google say, they're known to mislead SEO'ers. SEO doesn't make them money, PPC does, so they have no reason to properly educate people on SEO

I agree that Google doesn't have a history of being fully transparent, but I disagree that they don't make money from SEO. If their search results were awful, there would be no users, meaning no ads. They also sell other products that are related to organic search. The main point of this video is not to get bogged down over things that aren't going to move the needle. -Sam

@@AhrefsCom Sam, the point that I don't agree with is about the EMDs. In the region that I optimize for EMDs are the ones that stand out and rank for niche-specific queries. I personally tried several experiments and in my region, the EDMs always ranked better. I believe that is not the case in other regions.
@AhrefsCom
@AhrefsCom 2 жыл бұрын
It's possible :) I wasn't thinking of other search engines and can't really speak on them. Also was drawing examples from US SERPs. But here's some food for thought: I see EMDs often for local queries (in the US), but I'm not sure if we can say they rank higher because of the actual domain name. I mean, if there are tons of links w/ branded anchors (which would also be exact match to a target query), does G know if ppl are searching for A company or THE company? An example of this is for the query "Raleigh SEO." Google ranks an EMD. But are they ranking them because of the actual domain name or the fact that they see them as an entity? They get the knowledge panel for that query, but not "SEO Raleigh." Hence, I still stand by my statements on EMDs. Having the exact match to the query might come with some advantages, but the actual domain name itself isn't a ranking factor imo. More importantly, my main point was that people shouldn't be obsessing over it. -Sam
@viktorivanov6624
@viktorivanov6624 2 жыл бұрын
This is something I agree with. EMDs are not enough to rank on those certain keywords. I believe it helps because you can keep your website's structure fairly flat because you have your main keyword in the domain. But in no means just having the EMD will ever rank you in the top results. Note: I was referring to Google, but for Bulgaria. It is not in English, that's why I consider it almost like a separate search engine.

@@AhrefsCom When I send an article to be published, many webmasters, forum admin, and other site owners do not allow to use a commercial keyword as an anchor text, but they allow to use a branded anchor in a post. So if I have a keyword inside my company name and web address, I would get a partial match keyword anchor text. An example of this is "Total Sports Apparel" sports apparel is a commercial keyword. So, a keyword inside a domain helps me a lot to get keyword-rich anchors. What do you think?

Hi Sam, great video, lets get rid off all those out-dated tactics! Just one thought on EMDs: There is no direct SEO-effect but there is an effect due to auto-suggest-functions of browsers and search-engines. If a domain is met by that suggestion - or is close to it, this might help generating "direct" visits. Don't you think?

Hey Sam, In my experience EMDs are most likely to be clicked by users browsing the webpages for some queries which increases CTR and eventually improves your rankings. If there is no competition from authority websites, its most likely that user is going to click on the result which can relate with the query. Thoughts ?

I think exact match keyword domains work, but that depends on the situation. For example, exact match keyword domains will likely work if the search volume of the keyword is very low but have a high search volume. Since it's a very low competition, and Google loves to cater users with information they wanted, Google have no choice but to rank your site since it's catering the exact search of the user. But again, this all depends on many factors.

I quibble a bit over word-count. If a dozen competitors are shooting for the same SERPs, the sites with more relative/high quality content WILL rank better than those who do not (and yes, "more" = higher word count, more photos, more videos, etc).
@AhrefsCom
@AhrefsCom 2 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree that "high quality" = more words. If the topic is something like "how to restart an iPhone" would you want to read a 3000 word post, a 100 word, or 500 word? The answer in my opinion, is it doesn't matter. I would rather read the one that solves my query in as short a time as possible and restarting an iPhone for example, would probably fall into the 100 word category. Backlinks and other ranking signals aside, it's my opinion that it's about who can best serve the intent of the searcher. And for posts that end up being longer, I think that's the byproduct of content depth. ie. I don't think it's possible to solve the intent of a user searching for "how to do keyword research" in 500 words. The topic goes deep. Bottomline: use as many words as it takes to cover the topic in depth so it solves the user's query. -Sam
@heavypen
@heavypen 2 жыл бұрын
@@AhrefsCom I'll never say that a retail article about "how to restart your iPhone" warrants 3k wc, but if your post is "How to build an iPhone," then yes, I'd expect 3k or more if warranted. The variable is what audiences expect (which I believe is the salient issue). The blanket claim that people do not have to produce high word count content needs that qualifier.

Everything you said is right but putting Amazon as an example was not appropriate, I think. You should've used sites who are ranking millions of competitive keywords with long form content. You could also make a comparison between sites that use long form content and sites that use short form content. It would help people to understand the real sauce behind it. I want to add one thing that, for affiliate content where website owners publishes top 10 reviews type content, is there anything you want to say about it? I real appreciate your sensible reply. Thanks.

@@AhrefsCom I am following your channel from the beginning I think. It has helped me a lot in different cases. Everytime I have seen your videos are logical and meaningful as always. Now for this video, I wanted to know if long form contents are not a ranking factor, why people are writing long form content? Why most SEO Experts are recommending long form content and not only that, they are also showing a correlation between content length and ranking. In my case, I have also seen that long form content works better than short form content on any topic. And I have seen it myself in many instances personally. However, I was confused about it after watching your video as I rely on your comments. But this time my personal experience was against your opinion on long form content. That's all. @@riadussalehin7377 Hey what he is telling is if needed write in depth content.. Don't write long term article for seo reason. If you're talking about something and you can't explain it few paragraph then go for in depth article with a lot of example that probably help people to understand.. Some people writing in depth article that not even necessary for that article.

@riadussalehin7377
@riadussalehin7377 2 жыл бұрын
@@saranrajgunasekaran4084 I got your point though I am not totally agreeing with it. I think content length does matters in terms of ranking higher on Google. And if you talk about the search intent, I believe visitors always love extra information on the same topic. Suppose, if you want to write an article on "how to start digital marketing," it should endup with just the steps or methods or courses. I think you should expand the topic as much as you can keeping the article precise and to the point. And for any article regarding "definition of anything," it's always a good idea to expand the topic a bit to let the visitor know more information about it, and also it will keep the visitor on your webpage for longer period. I think "necessary" is sarcastic in terms of writing content. You can always expand your ideas and topic into several parts. I know some people will say what about writing other content on those subtopics, I think it is also necessary. The reason behind this is that, when target only a single topic in a article, it must cover some relevant topics also to create opportunity to link up your other contents on your website. Thank you for your kind reply, really appreciate it.

Great question with a complicated answer. Google's ability to read and "understand" can also apply to the origin of the backlink. If it comes from a contextually relevant and high quality origin, I reckon it will hold value...otherwise, that backlink will be neutral in it's influence on ranking.

However, the exact match domain comes up very well, even too well since I intend to keep only the exact match domain which ranks very well. I did the same on affiliate sites and the result is always the same. When we buy the exact query it ranks almost every time. For privacy reasons I will not disclose the name of the site. But if you test with the budget you have, you can prove to us that it doesn't work and I will be very happy. No need to be on deceptive tricks but only on quality

Tough to envision, but I think it's tough to conclude that it's because of the name of a domain vs. other considerations ie. backlinks and their anchors. The point of the video was more about "things not to obsess over" rather than things that don't work. Appreciate you sharing though! Personally, I'm not convinced and I will always choose brand over an EMD unless that EMD happens to be a brand name I like/want. Just my 2 cents :) -Sam

The core lesson (I think) is that effective SEO is incremental. No single thing gives you the big win.

Unique IP address or not? Personally I prefer a unique IP but Google says it doesn't matter.

Most of bloggers try to HACK into fastest posible ranking without providing quality content and getting lost in their actions, while they don't even know that Google algorithms are hundreds of times smarter...

Web is pay-to-play. No matter what you search, paid links come up first. You have to promote your site in other ways. Money paid to SEO "experts" is wasted.
