Regress to progress has really worked for me. I was trying for more pushups but had sloppy form. I wasn't really progressing. So, I backed up and started focusing on strict form. I have felt the difference and am slowly increasing reps while maintaining strict form.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions! I started with knee push ups for 2 months and then progressed to inclined push ups and now I am doing standard push ups but 10 is the maximum standard push ups I can do right now.

1 - starts with your hands, focus on creating a stronger press, spread fingers, press fingers down to ground 2 - stick with incline push ups, knee pushups maybe holding you back 3 - do the harder movement so focus on the eccentric motion going down as long as it's controlled 4 - target the back for a more powerful pushup especially Scapula movements 5 - stop doing more reps of a modified variation, it might be holding you back. Need to push for progress Bonus - include pushups in the beginning of your workout 💪

I have been adding reps at the same incline position for months and not seeing any progress! The advice to do fewer reps per set at a lower incline is exactly what I needed! Thanks!

The thing I was hoping you would tell is how close to the ground does the body need to be lowered to, to be considered “good form”?

I was really great at push-ups until my total left shoulder replacement. It's been two years and just can't get back to where I was. I started off on my knees then incline then regular push-ups. Still not where I want to be, just can't seem to get the strength back without feeling slight pain in the movement in my shoulder. 🤨

like w/ stamina activity where you can ruin it by going the wrong pace so also strength moves are best done in a way which optimizes technique ahead of prioritizing weight or reps... going for EFFECTIVE over "impressive" ends up as most actually impressive

I full out admit that I've never liked doing push-ups. But having dealt with back and knee pain for several years has given me a new found interest in wanting to be healthy and pain free. Plus doing some kind of movement helps my mood and mental well-being. So I appreciate the fact that you said a pushup is basically a moving plank. I like planks. And I'm going to work on being able to do push-ups by regressing the movement. Thanks for another great video. And Sushi and Kiwi look as adorable and fluffy as ever.

What I’ve been doing is as many incline pushups as I can then finishing the set with wall push ups for three sets. If I understand correctly, I should instead do sets of 5 or 6 reps for as many sets as it takes me to hit my goal number?
@redefiningstrengthOC
@redefiningstrengthOC Жыл бұрын
So ideally you'd start with the hardest variation possible and yes, even rest to keep at that more challenging variation over just modifying. While your reps past failure modifying does build strength, it can also keep us stuck at more modified variations. So I may even have a client do a single rep at an incline then rest and even then have to raise the incline there a bit for 2 reps.....

You can just go quarter way down, then back up. It still develops the necessary muscles. Keep time under tension at least 45 sec
@redefiningstrengthOC
@redefiningstrengthOC Жыл бұрын
Strengthening through the fullest range of motion possible is key to help improve shoulder stability and improve your control. Not to mention the stretch on the muscles by lowering down all the way can lead to better muscle hypertrophy.

So, If I understood correctly, when I don't have the strength to do a lot of push-ups with elbows along the trunk, there is no use of doing more push-ups elbows 45 degrees to the trunk (like in the video)?

A close grip push up isn't a standard grip push up. You can play around with hand placement based on what you want to target more and even previous injuries. Narrow grip or close grip push ups require less scapular control so can even at times be better starting back if you've had previous shoulder injuries. But you ideally want to learn to be able to control all hand placements to utilize variations to progress and target muscles to different extents.
