Buying a watch can be scary if it's your first time. Here are 5 things I always check before buying.

So you watched my last video on 5 tips for buying your first luxury watch and you have decided on what model you want and have finally found one. Here are 5 things to check before buying that watch.
#1 Make Sure It’s Not A Fake.
You do not have to be an expert and I am not suggesting for you to be able to spot a really good copy. If you followed my previous 5 tips then you are already buying from a reputable source. This is the first step that I always do and it’s to make sure it's the real deal. So if it looks cheap or not gold when it’s supposed to be a gold watch. It’s pretty self explanatory.
#2 Check The Overall Condition
You want to make sure that watch is in good overall condition. Make sure that it is not overly polished or perhaps incorrectly polished. You want to make sure it’s the same condition as you saw in photos. Many times you could have seen generic photos but once you have the actual watch or photo you want to make sure it's a nice one. Check that all the parts appear to be correct. For example if it’s a Rolex Submariner, make sure it does not have a GMT clasp and/or vice versa. Another example would be that if it’s an AP make sure the edges still look sharp and not rounded that would make it loose its iconic Royal Oak look. On a Rolex Presidential make sure that the band is not stretched out. These are easy things to look out for.
#3 Check The Crystal
This is something that even I have overlooked. You want to make sure the crystal does not have any scratches including on the edge.For Some watches it’s not a problem because a replacement crystal is very easy to locate while others it’s almost impossible and will require the watch to be sent back to the factory for service. This is something that you want to see there and make a decision before buying. The idea is not to make your watch buying experience unpleasant but a reminder to just look before you buy.
#4 Check The Movement For Proper Function
Actuate the movement and make sure that it’s working. If the watch has a chrono function start, stop, and reset it and make sure that it resets at zero. I like to always wind the watch up and make sure it feels and sounds smooth. If it’s is very rough then there could be a problem and it may need service. Most dealers will offer a 1 year warranty on the mechanism but it’s best to discover the problems right then and there.
#5 Make Sure The Papers Match The Watch
If the watch that you are buying has warranty books , papers, or card make sure that the serial number of the watch is the same as what is on the documents. It has happened many times even with people buying a new watch in the AD that they get the wrong papers only to learn that years later. I myself almost gave someone the wrong papers by accident. Luckily I noticed on time.
